WRJH January Newsletter

Message from Principal Phillips
Hello WRJH Families:
I hope everyone has enjoyed the holiday season and is well rested. As we have welcomed back the students to WRJH, we are going to focus on resetting expectations, getting back into the work of learning, and continue to grow as a school and community to put our students in the best position to be successful.
Traditionally, January and February are the hardest months of the year. The weather is not the greatest, cold and flu season is in full swing and everyone gets a little stir crazy. I encourage you to have conversations with your students about your expectations, as well as how to get through the days that we are not feeling our best. This is a reality that we all face, but students tend to struggle more with this. We will gladly work with each student when they are not feeling the best, but they need to communicate this. Additionally, when students don’t feel their best they tend to react negatively, which although understandable can lead to negative interactions/incidents with other students.
Additionally, we are only months away from the Ohio State tests and our focus will be on making sure that every student is in the best position to be successful. We are offering support services and our teachers will be working directly with your students to challenge them and help them grow to reach their full potential. If you notice your student is struggling, please reach out to us so that we can work together to help them.
Winter sports are in full swing and I hope that you are able to come and watch our Basketball teams and our Wrestlers sometime this month.

“Where greatness comes together!”
Oates' Corner
We are back again! It was such a wonderful December with our amazing culture night! Mr. Hilsheimer and the Culture Committee did such a great job! Our students were able to share about their cultural differences with their fellow students and the community. We had a wonderful 7th & 8th Grade Dance where we had some fun breaking it down on the dance floor.
Now for the second half of the year! We are starting off this first week with our PBIS assemblies to reset expectations. Please remind students that we should always have our hands to self. Also a reminder that we are getting very strict on phones at school. This is a state law that we must follow, and will do so accordingly.
We have SO many exciting things to look forward to. The movies at the end of January, and then we are going skating in March! Yes, skating! The students will get to see me fall many times. We also have some extraordinary projects.
We also have testing coming up in April. As we prepare for the testing season, please remind students to get plenty of rest. This season is often the hardest on our students.
Over the break, I was able to rest and reflect on our school community. I am so proud of what we have accomplished this year. We are working hard to create a safe, supportive environment for all of our students. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of helping them grow. We have such a bright future ahead of us, and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead. Let’s ROCK Quarter Three!!!!

NO Cell phone policy
Hello WRJH Families:
This is a reminder that the new Cell Phone law officially takes effect in January for all Ohio Public Schools. For WRJH students this means:
- Students may not use cell phones, earbuds, smartwatches, or similar devices during school hours.
- Devices must be turned off and stored out of sight during the school day.
- Beginning in January, staff will not be giving warnings about cell phone usage. Instead, any student that is using their cell phone will have to turn it in to the office to be picked up at dismissal.
- Please remember that we have a student phone available in the office for students to contact parents/guardians and you can always call the main office to get messages to your students.
At WRJH, we want all students to be engaged and feel safe every day. Student cell phones lead to educational disruptions, distractions, and significant social conflict. For this reason, WRJH will no longer allow students to use cell phones during the school day.
Please review our policy that includes the expectations of student use of cell phones and other devices, consequences of inappropriate use, and the communication plan to families in the event of an emergency:
Family support is essential to the success of WRJH’ s cell phone policy. Be sure to review the phone policy as a family. Consider:
Proactively talking with your student about after school plans, lunch planning, appointments, or activities in advance of arrival to school.
Reminding your student how they can reach family during school hours, and how you can reach them in case of an emergency through the school office.
Emphasizing the importance of adhering to school rules regarding the cellphone policy to ensure consistency in expectations between home and school.
Visiting the Ohio Dept of Education for more information and resources about cell phone use for your family.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation in facilitating a safe and supportive learning environment. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
