Our Learning Community...
It was another busy and meaningful week at Jones! Despite the incredible heat, our students and staff continued to show perseverance, flexibility, and care for one another as we navigated the warmer-than-usual conditions. Check out all of the photos below to see learning in action!
Our School Site Council (SSC) nomination form was sent out on Friday, and we are looking for two parent or community representatives to join this important team! SSC is a collaborative group of families, staff, and school leadership that helps review and provide input on our school goals, programs, and use of school funds to support student success. We also utilize our SSC representatives as members of our Site Governance Team (SGT) which is a shared decision-making team at every San Diego Unified school. At SGT we discuss important issues affecting students and the school community, provide input, and help shape decisions that support student learning and school improvement. The two meetings are held back-to-back. We meet monthly, and both meetings together typically take about one hour.
Whole Site Modernization Updates...
The Whole Site Modernization project at Jones Elementary School will upgrade and enhance the campus to better serve students and the community. Improvements include a new Administration building, upgraded security features, and a dedicated student drop-off and pick-up area. The project will also refresh classrooms, the library, and multi-purpose spaces, expand and modernize kindergarten and TK classrooms, and improve outdoor areas with upgraded playgrounds, walkways and landscaping. Select portable buildings will be removed, with some relocated and renovated for continued use. Additional enhancements include updated kitchen equipment and new joint-use facilities, including a grass field with a track and added parking, designed for both school and community use while maintaining campus security.
We are currently in the DSA & Regulatory Review Phase. This means the design plans are being reviewed by the state to make sure they meet California's required standards for structural safety, fire and life safety, and accessibility. Once the necessary approvals are received, the project can move forward into the construction bidding phase and then into construction which is estimated to begin next school year.

Volunteer Paperwork...
We love having our families involved in our school community! If you are interested in volunteering as a room parent, classroom or school volunteer during the school day, or as a chaperone for a field trip, please complete our volunteer paperwork using the link... https://forms.gle/LUXPTavDg8EsAXq16
San Diego Unified classifies these types of volunteers as Category B volunteers when they are working with students in supervised settings. Category B volunteers are required to complete the district volunteer application and screening process, including providing required documentation such as TB clearance and a government-issued ID.
To make the process easier for our families, all volunteer paperwork for Jones Elementary is now being managed digitally through the Google Form above. It is also linked on our school website located within the "Get Involved" section under the "Parents" tab. Once you submit the form, our school team will review and process the required information. You will receive an email when your paperwork has been processed, please note volunteer approval must be completed before you begin volunteering.
Volunteer opportunities and needs will vary from classroom to classroom throughout the year. Each teacher will determine when and how volunteers can best support their students, taking into consideration the age of the students, the needs of the classroom, and the dynamics of their classroom community. For some groups of students, having additional adults in the classroom can provide valuable support and enrichment during strategic times; for others, additional visitors may become a distraction or interrupt the learning environment. We ask that families trust and respect the boundaries and decisions of our classroom teachers as they determine what is most supportive for their students. Our shared goal is to ensure that every classroom environment allows all students to focus and be successful.
If you are simply coming onto campus for a family event, such as attending a performance, awards ceremony, Family Workshop, or another event as a parent/guardian, volunteer paperwork is not required.
Thank you for sharing your time, talents, and energy with our students. Your partnership makes Jones an even stronger community!

Highlights From Last Week...
We were taking extra measures to stay cool last week!
Thanks to our PTA, we had new pop up tents to add additional shade to the playground.
Our Cafe included popsicles as a special part of lunch.
We also used the counseling center to offer Recess Refresh during the lunch recess.
Students could choose to come inside the air conditioned classroom and have a reprieve from the heat.
It is always fun coloring with friends!
This past week we also launched IMPACT! IMPACT stands for Increasing Movement and Physical Activity in Class Time.
IMPACT is a 20 minute rotation of station-based activities first thing in the morning. This year IMPACT will be on Tuesday and Fridays.
IMPACT incorporates the five components of physical fitness (Endurance, Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Healthy Body Composition) by increasing daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in students.
Stretching for flexibility! Students gently stretch their shoulders to improve flexibility and range of motion, helping their bodies move comfortably and safely during physical activity.
Quick feet and strong bodies! Students practice different footwork patterns through the agility ladder, developing coordination, agility, balance, muscular strength, and body control, all while challenging themselves to improve.
Jumping, moving, and having fun! Students use hula hoops to practice jumping patterns, coordination, balance, and agility while building muscular strength and endurance.
Building locomotor skills! Students practice marching and skipping around the basketball court, developing coordination, balance, and control while building endurance and learning to move their bodies in different ways.
Building endurance one lap at a time! Students run at their own pace to strengthen their cardiovascular endurance and develop stamina for sustained physical activity.
Stretching our way to greater flexibility! These fun stretches help students improve flexibility, mobility, and body awareness while learning how to safely prepare their muscles for movement.
Building a school where every student feels seen, valued, and a true sense of belonging starts with our staff. On Wednesday our team engaged in meaningful professional learning around equity and belonging, with a focus on microaggressions.
We spent time learning about microaggressions and reflecting on how we can recognize them, respond thoughtfully, and create environments where everyone feels respected and included.
Our commitment to belonging requires us to continually look inward, challenge our thinking, and grow. This type of professional learning as a staff builds our understanding and our capacity to respond with courage and care.
QUEST...
QUEST is the Department of Defense Grant for Jones Elementary along with six other San Diego Unified Elementary Schools. The QUEST grant is focused on building STEAM and Social Emotional Learning through Questioning, Understanding, Experiencing, Sharing and Thinking.
Mrs. Deaton is a San Diego Unified teacher who is currently in a Resource Teacher role supporting the schools in the grant. This week Mrs. Deaton was on site co-teaching in all of our TK - 5th grade classrooms. In Kindergarten students had an introduction to Ozobots and screen free coding. Social emotional lessons with mentor texts were the focus for TK with Beautiful Oops! , First grade with The Kindness Snippet Jar, and Second grade with Bubble Gum Brain. Fourth grade used the Sphero robots to learn how to create coding blocks. And Third, Fourth and Fifth grade classrooms launched Bookcreator, a technology tool that gives students creativity as they create writing pieces.

Bikes, Force & Motion
Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!
Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.
Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.
Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:
Choose a cozy time and space to read together
Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)
Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension
Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby
The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
