Deer Families
Deer Hill School News . March 29, 2024
Hello, Deer Hill Families!
This week we held our March conferences. Thank you so much to the many families who participated in this opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the amazing accomplishments of our students and to set goals for the remainder of the year. Conferences are an important way that we partner with you in order to promote student success. Additionally, at this time of year each of our Cohasset schools seeks your feedback on your overall experience through the completion of a Family Survey. Deer Hill's survey this year aligns carefully with our CPS Strategic Plan. If you have been at Deer Hill for a few years, you may recognize this survey from the 2021-2022 school year. This is by design so that the Deer Hill School Council (who developed the survey), staff, and leadership can compare our past data as part of our analysis of our strengths and ares of growth.
It would be GREATLY appreciated if you would take a few minutes to complete the Deer Hill Family-School Relationship Survey 2024 by the end of the day Friday, April 12. Your input through the survey is anonymous, though I always welcome direct feedback. I'm happy to have a phone call or meet if you have anything you'd like to discuss directly. Thank you again for being such an important voice in our Deer Hill community.
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School
P.S. Our next newsletter will be published on April 12, 2024.
Need to Knows
MCAS: MCAS begins next week with the ELA assessment (see dates in the calendar below). Thank you so much for ensuring your child gets a good night's sleep, eats a nutritious breakfast (also available at school), and is in attendance at school if feeling well. Thank you for your help in avoiding unnecessary absences.
Deer Hill BASE Registration: The Spring session of the Deer Hill Before and After School Enrichment Program will begin the week of April 28. Flyers were sent home with students early this week. Courses fill up quickly, so be sure to register asap! Please note, we need a minimum of five students for each course in order to run the course. Spring is a perfect time to grab a few friends and enjoy a BASE program together.
Math Mornings at Deer Hill: Deer Hill is excited to invite all families to enjoy a morning of math games with students followed by a presentation from our math specialists. Please see the attached flyer for dates, details, and a link to RSVP for these morning events hosted by each grade level.
"FAVORITES '24" Deer Hill Student Art Exhibit: Each student has chosen a favorite artwork of the year to be included in this exhibit. The gala opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 7-8:30pm. We will also be celebrating the grand unveiling of a very special 5th grade clay tile art installation to be hung in our newly renovated Susan B. McNamara Innovation Commons. There will be refreshments and music. All are invited to attend. You won't want to miss it!
Specialist Newsletters: Earlier this month, links to our trimester 2 specialist newsletters were emailed to families. Here they are again for your reference.
Attention Grade 5 Families: Principal Mills from Cohasset Middle School and I collaborate closely to ensure a smooth transition to 6th grade for our current 5th graders. Please see this document which lists the dates of all planned transition steps.
Order Your Deer Hill T-Shirt: Please place your order on MySchoolBucks, and we'll send a t-shirt home with your child.
Deer Hill Happenings
March Deer Teams: This month’s Deer Teams book, A Crown for Corina by Laekan Zea Kemp, celebrates the Mexican tradition of creating coronas, flower crowns worn by people of honor during celebrations. As an extension activity students learned about papel picado, a traditional Mexican folk art made by cutting elaborate designs into sheets of paper, creating a banner that is used as decorations for these same celebrations. Students made their own and you will see them throughout the school!
All School Chorus and Band Concerts: Deer Hill students were the youngest performers at the All School Chorus and All School Band concerts on March 20 and 21. In my unbiased opinion they stole the show! I can't wait to see them grow as performers at this event in future years. Bravo to chorus leader, Kristen Lewis and band leader, Mr. DeWaal!
Community Visitors at Deer Hill: 5th grade students participated in a morning of scientific discovery through a Water Smart workshop presented by North River Watershed Association. Many thanks to the eleven parent volunteers who were trained by North River in running stations on topics such as conservation, pollution and watershed mapping.
Deer Hill Read-a-Thon: The final week of the Read-a-Thon included read alouds from members of our Cohasset community and capped things off with a cozy Read Your Heart Out PJ Spirit Day. Thank you to the PSO for a fabulous celebration of reading!
