Updates From The Principal
Hello NRMS Families,
We have reached the end of February and there are clear signs of spring. I think we are all ready for milder temperatures outside along with more hours of sunshine. Over the February break, we continued with our project to remove the older sections of carpeting in the school. The hallway outside the library was converted to the new, tiled flooring and it looks great.
This week our students completed the second and final round of iReady assessments for Reading. Overall, students showed positive growth since the fall assessment back in September. This is a good indicator/predictor of performance on the spring round of MCAS testing that will take place in April and May. Our students took the assessment seriously, took their time on this untimed test, and did their best. That is all we can ask for and we are proud of their academic achievement. In a couple of weeks, students will complete the second and final iReady assessment for this year in Math.
You may have heard that we were exploring adjustments to our schedule for next year. We have decided that we will use the current schedule again during the 2025-2026 school year. We will continue our review process throughout next year. Among the adjustments we will make for next year are a transition to three marking periods for year-long courses. We will also expand the menu of exploratory courses for 8th graders to include a music elective and a PE elective. Soon, our 7th grade students will need to select their electives for 8th grade. All 8th graders will continue with the world language they are taking in Grade 7. Additionally, all 8th graders have Health and PE in their schedules. For the remaining two quarters 8th graders are able to select two courses from a list that will include electives in art, music, PE, technology, greenhouse, change makers, and creative power skills. We will soon share more detailed information about these choices and instructions on how to rank student preferences.
Our 8th graders have the privilege of participating in our version of March Madness with the second annual cornhole tournament. 8th graders have been finding a faculty partner and the brackets will be unveiled next week. We hope that most 8th graders will choose to participate in this fun event.
Enjoy the weekend and the start of March.
