Advanced Tiers Academy
Deepening Implementation at Tier 2 and 3
Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Training and Consultation Team for this IN PERSON training.
This academy is designed for participants looking to strengthen and deepen their implementation of Tier 2 and Tier 3 social, emotional, and behavioral interventions. Participants will select two targeted interventions to explore in-depth through focused morning and afternoon sessions. Throughout the day, participants will enhance their intervention menus, improve progress monitoring systems, and ensure alignment with existing PBIS/MTSS frameworks. Whether you're developing new interventions or refining existing ones, this academy offers a step-by-step roadmap for effective and sustainable intervention implementation.
Training Sessions-Morning
Building Executive Functioning Through Small Groups (AM Session)
This session explores how to build executive functioning skills through targeted small group instruction. Participants will learn practical strategies to support students in areas such as organization, attention, planning, and self-regulation within a Tier 2 framework.
Self-Monitoring: Moving Students to Independence (AM Session)
This session will explore ways to establish a tier 2 self-monitoring intervention. Self-monitoring is a highly effective Tier 2 intervention that helps students self-assess and keep track of their behavior. By monitoring their own actions, students naturally increase their focus to achieve desired outcomes. This training will guide participants through structuring a self-monitoring intervention that can be used in a digital or paper format.
Prevent, Teach, Reinforce (PTR): Tier 3 Behavior Plan Model (AM Session)
This session introduces participants to Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR)—an evidence-based, team-driven approach for addressing challenging behavior through individualized support plans. Participants will learn how to collaboratively identify the function of behavior, design effective prevention strategies, teach replacement skills, and reinforce positive behavior. The training will walk teams through each step of the PTR process, providing tools and templates to support implementation within existing PBIS/MTSS systems.
Structuring Breaks for Success (AM Session)
In this session, educators will explore the vital role of structured breaks in supporting student regulation, engagement, and academic success. Participants will learn evidence-based strategies for designing and implementing effective break routines that enhance focus and well-being. The training will also address how to incorporate breaks across all tiers of support within a PBIS/MTSS framework with a specific focus on Tiers 2 and 3.
Training Sessions-Afternoon
Student Focused Planning: Supporting Student Voice & Choice (PM Session)
This session introduces the foundations of student-focused planning as a tool to elevate student voice and choice in educational and transition planning. Participants will explore strategies to engage students in meaningful goal setting and decision-making that reflects their strengths, preferences, and aspirations.
Supporting Students through Peer-Based Interventions (PM Session)
This session will introduce participants to the possibilities of peers as supports for behavior change. Participants will learn how to identify and train peer mentors and consider ways to enhance current interventions through the support of peers.
Behavior Response Plans: Tier 3 Behavior Plan Model (PM Session)
This session will guide participants in developing Behavior Response Plans grounded in the crisis model. Educators will learn how to proactively recognize stages of a behavioral crisis and respond with appropriate, trauma-informed strategies that prioritize safety and de-escalation. The session will cover key components of effective response plans, including early intervention, staff roles, supportive communication, de-escalation, and recovery. Participants will leave with practical tools to create individualized plans aligned with student needs.
Initial Line of Inquiry (ILI): How to Problem Solve as a Team (PM Session)
This session will introduce participants to the Initial Line of Inquiry (ILI) process—a structured, team-based approach to problem-solving around students' social, emotional, and behavioral support needs. Using the ILI process, teams collaboratively examine slow and fast triggers, target behaviors, maintaining consequences, the function of behavior, and student strengths and needs. This process helps teams build a clearer understanding of student behavior and lays the foundation for effective, individualized supports.
