Building With a Purpose

Students in the Robotics and Automation class are learning firsthand how critical balance is to successful robot design. Their current challenge focuses on achieving a proper center of mass—a concept that becomes far more complex when working with irregularly shaped parts that must be mechanically connected to earn credit.

Now in the early stages of robotic construction, students are discovering that even small design choices can dramatically affect stability and movement. Through this lesson, they gain a deeper appreciation for the engineering precision required to build and balance a robot capable of moving smoothly and freely across a variety of surfaces.

Real-World Science

Last week, GWA fourth graders (some in their 100th day of school costumes) put science to work in BARK! Students dove into the water cycle by designing and building their own water purifiers - using rocks, sand, and charcoal to model how Earth naturally cleans water. As “dirty” water flowed through each layer, they watched runoff turn into filtered groundwater right before their eyes!

This hands-on challenge blended engineering, problem-solving, and environmental science, helping students see how rainfall is purified beneath our feet and why protecting groundwater matters. Real-world science, big discoveries, and curious minds at work!

New Language, New Friends, New Perspective

George Walton Academy students participated in immersive exchange experiences in France and Spain, where they lived with host families and attended St. Denis International School in Loches or St. Paul’s School Barcelona. The exchanges blended language learning, cultural discovery, and personal growth, giving students a true taste of daily life abroad.

Travel throughout France brought history and geography to life. Alex Gervais said, “From Chamonix to Brittany, I saw many stunning landscapes,” including skiing near Mont Blanc and visiting iconic landmarks like Mont-Saint-Michel. He also shared that Loches stood out for its history, with “a large castle that once housed several French kings.”

Living with host families offered students an authentic look at everyday life. Caitlyn Roberts said, “Living with a host family helped me see what everyday life is like there, and I made some great friends.” Emily Chmielewski shared that “living with a French family really helped me get the real feeling of French culture,” adding that hearing and speaking French all day strengthened her confidence and understanding.

Kingston Guertin said the exchange allowed him to experience “multiple different cultures,” explaining that meeting students from around Europe and beyond helped him build friendships and memories “that will last me a lifetime.” He shared that the experience strengthened not only his French speaking skills but also his “cultural knowledge and understanding.”

Students in Spain experienced similar immersion through school, travel, and independence. Landry Atkinson shared that exploring Spain “through the lens of everyday life…made the culture feel real and personal,” and said the experience helped her feel confident, independent, and empowered while navigating a new country. Reflecting on the experience, Cohen Powers said the exchange “helped me become more globally aware and independent,” pushing him to adapt and grow in a new cultural setting.

Students also embraced new school routines abroad. Alex said he enjoyed “being able to eat out at lunch and having several recess periods a day,” noting that his exchange partner helped him feel welcomed and connected.

Through travel, friendships, and full immersion in French and Spanish life, GWA students returned home with lasting memories—and a broader view of the world.

Mexico City Exchange Set for Spring '26

The Mexico City Exchange Program with CEAM offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience another culture from the inside out. This spring, our exchange students from Mexico City will visit our campus from April 13–26, giving participants the chance to build friendships and connections.

GWA students will then travel to Mexico City, departing Wed., May 20, at the end of the school day and returning June 2. While there, students will attend school, live with host families, and explore the rich culture and history of one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

Through full immersion in both communities, students gain real-world language skills, develop global awareness, and form lasting friendships that extend far beyond the exchange. If you’re curious about the world, excited to learn through experience, and ready for an adventure, the Mexico City Exchange Program is an opportunity you won’t want to miss. This program is for both middle and high school students. Contact Director of Global Studies Cécile Gervais for more details.

Janfest Honor Band

We are so very proud of the 10 young musicians who auditioned and were chosen by the UGA School of Music to attend this year's UGA Janfest Honor Band event! Several thousand students auditioned from schools all over the Southeast. UGA chose the top students from these programs and placed them in nine different bands according to their audition results - of course you had to make it first! Students have a guest conductor that works with the group and puts together a full 40 minute concert in a day and a half. It's a great experience and we are excited for our students who made the cut this year! They performed in front of thousands in Hodgson Hall at the UGA School of Music.

Congratulations to Nick Schultz, Alex Garren, Carrie Ann Plyler, Wendy Menard, Addison Hayes, Maddie Garrett, Nate Simon, Cole Woodson, Kade Franklin and Jon Terpstra!

GWA Artists Shine at Georgia Capitol

Congratulations to Harper Davis (4th grade) and Noah Bullock (1st grade) on having their artwork selected for the 2026 Georgia state Capitol Art Exhibit! Their artwork will be on display in the Capitol building alongside art from students all over the state! The purpose of this art show is to promote and advocate for the arts with our state legislators by showing them just how amazing our young artists are. It is an honor to be chosen and if you see these students around tell them congratulations!

Intentional Acts of Kindness

As a part of our Kindness Celebration, we recently hosted Peter Gunnin, a pastor from Grace Monroe, who spoke with middle and upper school students about the importance of purposeful compassion.

Gunnin shared the biblical story of the Good Samaritan to illustrate the difference between simply being nice and being truly kind. He encouraged students to make kindness a daily habit, using the metaphor of putting on a “cloak of kindness” before leaving home each morning.

To reinforce these principles, GWA School Counselor Lisa Leonard provided kindness pledge sheets for students to sign. By signing the pledge, students committed to incorporating intentional acts of kindness into their everyday lives.
