How Parents Can Help Their Child’s Teacher

At the beginning of the school year, we all tend to start strong. Backpacks are organized, forms are returned, newsletters are read, and routines are running smoothly. Then life gets busier. Practices start, work gets hectic, evenings fill up, and sometimes those routines begin to slip.

That is completely normal, but this is a great time of year for a quick reset.

There are several simple things families can do that make a big difference for teachers and for students:

  • Read school and classroom communication. Teachers work hard to keep families informed about learning, upcoming events, reminders, and changes. Staying up to date helps prevent missed deadlines and last-minute surprises.
  • Return forms and paperwork promptly. Permission slips, conference forms, and other documents are often tied to important timelines.
  • Label belongings. Jackets, water bottles, lunchboxes, backpacks, and other items are much more likely to make it home when they have a name on them.
  • Keep dismissal changes to a minimum. Consistent dismissal plans help children feel secure and help us keep dismissal safe and organized. When a change is necessary, communicate it as early as possible.
  • Arrive on time (7:40 am). Being at school on time helps children start the day calmly and keeps them from missing important instruction and classroom routines.
  • Communicate concerns early. If something is bothering your child or you have a question, reach out before a small concern becomes a big one. Respectful, early communication gives families and teachers the best chance to work together on a solution.

Another meaningful way to support your child’s teacher is simply to be involved when you can. That might mean volunteering at school, helping with an event, sending in needed supplies, attending a program, joining PTA, or helping from home.

Children notice when the adults in their lives make time for school. When they see parents volunteering, attending events, reading communication, and supporting their teachers, it sends a powerful message: school is important, your education matters, and we are all part of this community.

Volunteering and helping also gives children a wonderful model of what it means to give back. They see that being part of a community means contributing, helping others, and showing up when you are able.

No family can do everything, and we do not expect anyone to. Even small things make a difference. A returned form, an on-time arrival, a labeled jacket, a kind email, or an hour spent helping at school all add up.

When families and teachers work together, students feel that partnership — and they are the ones who benefit most.

Lunch Visitors

Lunch visitors are welcome to come any week day but please remember the following rules and guidelines:
  • If someone other than parent/guardian listed in Skyward is coming to have lunch with your student. You can use this convenient google form to let us know to expect a non-guardian for lunch. As family situations can frequently change, we do need this filled out each time someone comes for lunch.
  • Students enjoy an occasional lunch visitor, but it is also important for them to have routine opportunities to have lunch with their friends. We ask that lunch visits are limited to once per week.

Principal Vaughn’s 60-Second Parent Tip: Resist the Rescue

We have all been there — the forgotten water bottle, homework folder, library book, or jacket. Our first instinct is often to turn around, bring it to school, or fix the problem for our child.

Sometimes, though, a small forgotten item can be a great opportunity to build responsibility.

If the situation is safe and manageable, consider letting your child experience the natural consequence and figure out what to do next. Maybe they borrow a pencil, use the water fountain, or remember the item the next day. Then, later, talk about what they could do differently tomorrow.

The goal is not to make children feel bad. The goal is to help them learn, “I can solve problems, and I can make a better plan next time.”

Of course, there are times when stepping in is necessary. But for the small things, resisting the urge to rescue every time can help children become more responsible, prepared, and confident.
