Hardman's Happenings

Hello Oak Hill Families!

Happy Fall! Our first quarter ended on Friday, October 2nd, and Parent-Teacher Conferences were held across all schools on Wednesday, September 30th. I am excited to share that Converse had 100% participation, and Sweetser was very close to reaching that same milestone! Thank you to our families and teachers for making time for these valuable conversations.

Participation was lower at Swayzee, the Junior High, and the High School, and I want to emphasize that staying connected with your child’s teachers matters at every age. As students grow older, they navigate multiple classes, increasing academic expectations, extracurricular activities, and greater independence. A strong partnership between home and school helps them manage those responsibilities and ensures they have the support they need. Conferences provide an opportunity to celebrate successes, identify concerns early, and work together on next steps—even when your child is doing well.

If you were unable to attend, please reach out to your child’s teachers by email to check on their progress and ask how you can support their learning at home. First-quarter report cards are also available through Skyward Family Access. Click the Portfolio tile to find your child’s report card, which you can view or download.

The Oak Hill School's operating referendum will appear on the ballot in the November 3rd election. The referendum would provide additional funding for daily operating expenses, including staffing, student programs, transportation, and safety services. The district has shared information in public meetings and online about its financial outlook, the proposed tax impact, and potential reductions if the referendum does not pass. We encourage families to review this information and contact the superintendent’s office with any questions so they can make an informed decision. Please remember Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd.

I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful fall break next week! Whether you’re traveling or relaxing at home, I hope you have time to rest, have fun, and make memories together. As a reminder, there will be No School Monday, October 19, through Friday, October 23. Classes will resume on Monday, October 26.

Enjoy your break and thank you, as always, for your continued support of Oak Hill Schools!

Yours in Education,
Sheri Hardman
OHUSC Superintendent

Measles: Know the Facts, Be Prepared

You may have heard about measles cases in the news or in other communities. While there is

no need to panic, it is helpful for families to know the facts and understand what to do if measles

is reported in our county.

What is measles?

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes,

and a rash. Most people recover, but measles can sometimes lead to serious complications,

especially in young children and people with weakened immune systems.

How can I help protect my family?

The best protection against measles is vaccination. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)

vaccine is safe and effective. Families can check their child’s vaccination records and talk with

their healthcare provider if they are unsure whether their child is up to date.

What if measles comes to our county?

Stay informed through trusted sources such as your local health department and school. If your

child develops symptoms that could be measles—particularly fever followed by a rash—call

your healthcare provider before going to the office or emergency room. Calling first allows

the healthcare team to help you safely and reduce the chance of exposing others.

A measles case in our community does not mean that everyone will become sick. Knowing the

signs, keeping vaccinations up to date, and following guidance from public health officials are

simple steps families can take to be prepared.

Stay informed. Stay calm. Take care of one another.

What Parents Should Know

● Measles spreads easily. It can spread through the air when an infected person

coughs, sneezes, or breathes.

● Watch for symptoms. Fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes may appear

first, followed by a rash.

● Vaccination is the best protection. Check your child’s MMR vaccination record and

contact your healthcare provider with questions.

● Call before visiting. If your child has symptoms and measles is a possibility, call the

healthcare provider before arriving in person.

● Use trusted information. Follow updates from your school, local health department,

and CDC rather than relying on social media or rumors.

For reliable information about measles and vaccination, visit the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention (CDC) or your local health department.

Sweetser Snapshot

🦅 October at Sweetser Elementary!

Happy October, Eagle Families! 💙

What a fantastic month it has been at Sweetser Elementary School! October has been filled with learning, special experiences, family involvement, and plenty of reasons to celebrate our Eagles. From exciting field trips to Gym With Your Kid Week, our students have had so many opportunities to learn, grow, and make memories together.

Thank you to our families and staff for making Sweetser such a wonderful place to learn and grow. Here are a few highlights from October and some important reminders as we head into November!

📚 iLearn Checkpoints Have Begun!

Our 3rd and 4th grade students have begun taking their iLearn Checkpoint assessments! These assessments help teachers see what students have learned so far and identify areas where additional support or instruction may be needed. They are an important part of helping us monitor progress and support student growth throughout the year.

Here are a few ways families can help students feel prepared:

  • Get a good night's sleep. A well-rested brain is ready to learn!

  • Start the day with breakfast. A nutritious breakfast can help students feel focused and ready to go.

  • Encourage a positive attitude. Remind your child to take their time, read directions carefully, and do their very best.

  • Remind them not to rush. Students should read each question carefully, think through their answers, and use their time wisely.

  • Keep it in perspective. Checkpoints help teachers understand what students know and what they still need to learn. Encourage your child to try their best without feeling unnecessary pressure.

As always, our goal is to help students grow, build confidence, and show what they know. Thank you for partnering with us to support our Eagles! 🦅

🏃‍♀️ Gym With Your Kid Week Was a HUGE Success!

What an amazing week! Our Gym With Your Kid Week was an absolute success, and it was wonderful to see so many students and family members participating together in physical education.

These moments are a great reminder of how special the partnership between home and school can be. Thank you to Miss Drake for organizing this wonderful opportunity and to all of our families who were able to attend. We loved seeing everyone learning, moving, laughing, and making memories together!

Enjoy a few highlights from our week! 📸

Red Ribbon Week

October 26-30 is Red Ribbon Week, a nationwide celebration encouraging students to make healthy choices and live drug-free lives! At Swayzee Elementary, we are committed to helping our Golden Eagles develop the confidence, character, and skills needed to make positive decisions. Throughout the week, we encourage families to have conversations about the importance of staying drug-free, choosing good friends, and standing strong against peer pressure. Together, we can help our students build bright, healthy futures. Small School, Big Heart, BIG Choices! As part of our RRW celebration, our student council has identified some themed dress up days.

Monday the 26th - “I mustache you not to do drugs” (Wear mustaches)

Tuesday the 27th - “Lei off drugs” (Wear leis and Hawaiian clothes)

Wednesday the 28th - “Don’t get mixed up in drugs” (Wear mismatched clothes)

Thursday the 29th - “We won’t let drugs stop us!” (Wear red)

Friday the 30th - “My costume is cool, but living drug free rules!” (Come in Disney character costume “Choose Your Magic! Stay Drug Free!” or food themed “DONUT let drugs ruin your future!)

Fundraiser Success — Thank You, Swayzee Families!

A huge THANK YOU to our students, families, and community members for supporting our recent school fundraiser! We know that fundraising requires time, effort, and the generosity of others, and we sincerely appreciate everyone who helped make this event a success.

We would especially like to recognize our top three student fundraisers:

Rikki Skinner

Adelyn Coffman

Gunnar Rose

We are proud of these students and all of our Golden Eagles who participated. Every contribution helps support opportunities and experiences for our students. Your generosity is one more example of what makes our small school so special!

Attendance Matters — Every Day Counts!

As we settle into the second nine weeks, we want to remind families how important consistent school attendance is for student success.

At Swayzee, six class periods equal one full day of attendance. Missing even a few periods regularly can add up quickly and result in valuable lost instructional time.

We understand that illnesses and family emergencies happen. However, making regular attendance a priority helps students stay connected to classroom instruction, build positive relationships, and develop habits that will serve them throughout their lives.

Be here. Be involved. Be a Golden Eagle!

Learning, Growing, and Working Hard

October is also an important month academically as our students continue building skills and working toward their individual learning goals.

Our teachers have been using classroom performance and ILEARN Checkpoint assessment results to identify areas of strength and opportunities for additional support. Some students are participating in targeted mathematics intervention to help strengthen essential skills and build confidence.

We encourage families to continue supporting learning at home by asking about the school day, encouraging reading, practicing math skills, and celebrating progress — even the small victories!

Our goal is simple: every student growing, every day.

A Special Visit from Grammy-Nominated Songwriter Steve Seskin

October brought a truly special experience to Swayzee Elementary when Grammy-nominated songwriter Steve Seskin visited our school, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Honeywell Center.

Steve is known not only for his musical talents but also for his powerful message of kindness, acceptance, and the importance of treating others with respect.

During his visit, Steve worked alongside Mr. Alexander, Ms. Woodard, and our fifth- and sixth-grade choir students to create something uniquely ours — an original song about Swayzee Elementary School!

The experience gave our students the opportunity to see the creative process in action, contribute their own ideas, and discover how music can bring people together. Our all-school assembly allowed everyone to share in the excitement and hear a message that fits perfectly with our school theme, Small School, Big Heart.

A special thank-you goes to Student Council President Deborah Lin for helping welcome Steve to Swayzee.

We are grateful to the Honeywell Center for providing this memorable opportunity. The songs we sing may fade, but the lessons about kindness, belonging, and acceptance are ones we hope our students carry with them long after they leave Swayzee.

Monster Mash Dash — A Spooktacular Time!

Our Swayzee Monster Mash Dash on October 10 was an exciting opportunity to bring our school community together for some colorful, spooky fun!

Students and families were invited to run, walk, jog, or dash their way through the event, with Halloween-themed festivities adding to the excitement. More than just a fundraiser, the Monster Mash Dash was designed to celebrate school spirit, healthy activity, and the joy of spending time together.

We extend a special thank-you to the volunteers, families, businesses, and community sponsors who helped support this event. Activities like this simply would not be possible without the people who give their time and resources to our students.

At Swayzee, we don't just go the extra mile — sometimes we dash it in costume!

Small School. Big Heart. That’s Swayzee!

🚗 Afternoon Dismissal & Student Pick-Up Reminder

As a reminder, Swayzee Elementary dismisses at 2:55 p.m. each day. Recently, we have seen an increasing number of students waiting at school for rides, sometimes for more than 30 minutes after dismissal. While we certainly understand that emergencies and unexpected delays happen, we ask that families make every effort to arrange for students to be picked up promptly at the end of the school day.

Our staff members have responsibilities and commitments following dismissal, and extended wait times create challenges for supervision. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us ensure that all students are picked up safely and in a timely manner. As a reminder, we offer shuttles between the buildings so that families with students in multiple buildings are able to shuttle everyone to one location for pick up. Thank you for being considerate of our students' time and the staff members who remain with them!

Ellewyn Pennington - 6th Grade Student of the Month

Ellewyn handles every day with a positive attitude. She walks into the classroom with a smile, ready to learn and eager to make the day better for everyone around her. She is always willing to help. Whether it is volunteering to help a teacher clean up after an activity, or stepping up to support a peer in need. Her kindness and positive attitude make our 6th-grade community a brighter, more welcoming place.

Tracy Martin - Swayzee Staff Member of the Month

We are thrilled to recognize Mrs. Tracy Martin as our Swayzee Staff Member of the Month! If you've ever stepped inside Mrs. Martin's Social Studies classroom, you know that history is anything but boring! Her lessons are incredibly engaging, her enthusiasm is contagious, and she has a remarkable gift for making the past come alive for her students.

The proof is in the results! Our students consistently score well above the state average in the area of Social Studies, and that success is a direct reflection of the passion for learning Mrs. Martin inspires. She doesn't just teach Social Studies—she creates students who genuinely LOVE it! Her creativity, dedication, and high expectations make a lasting impact on our Golden Eagles.

Congratulations, Mrs. Martin! Thank you for going above and beyond to make learning memorable, meaningful, and FUN! We are so fortunate to have you at Swayzee Elementary!

Outsiders Day at the Junior High

8th grade students enjoyed Outsiders Day on Friday, September 25. Early in the day, students traveled to the Eagles' Theater to watch the film and make comparisons between the text and the movie. When we returned, students ate a chocolate cake (favorite food of the Outsiders) that they made in PCC and were able to view classic cars from the time period thanks to the generous participation of parents/grandparents. Later, they performed skits, songs, poems, and dances from the 1960s. Students won prizes for their performances as well as the biographies, cars, and dioramas they produced. To finish the day, students participated in an Outsiders Kahoot game where they tested their knowledge against their peers. What a fun day we had. Many thanks to the entire 8th grade staff for their help and participation, as well as the 8th grade parents who donated to help make our day a success!

OHHS Students and Staff Member of the Month

Mason Cates - Freshman Student of the Month

Mason is our Freshman Student of the Month because of the effort he is making to step up and become a leader within the choir program. Mason is showing a growing sense of responsibility and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in the ensemble. What stands out most is how much he cares about his words, his actions, and the impact he has on those around him. When feedback he offered was misunderstood, it weighed heavily on him for days, demonstrating how deeply he cares about communicating well and being a positive influence. His willingness to reflect on situations and learn from them is an important quality of a strong leader. I am proud of the growth Mason is showing and encourage him to continue developing his leadership skills, trusting that his intentions and desire to do what is right are valuable assets to our choir community.

Kinleigh may not always get an A+ but she tries hard and puts a lot of effort into her grades. Kinleigh loves her classes and teachers. Accounting is her favorite class and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Edwards. She is kind, friendly and loving. Nevaeh Cox - Junior Student of the Month

Nevaeh Cox is nominated for Student of the Month due the tremendous growth she has demonstrated in U.S. History this year. Nevaeh has stepped outside of her comfort zone by actively participating in class discussions, sharing her ideas, and becoming more confident in the classroom. She has openly shared that history has been a subject she has struggled with in the past, which makes her success this year even more meaningful. Nevaeh has worked hard to understand the content, remained engaged in her learning, and shown a willingness to challenge herself. It has been wonderful to watch her confidence grow as she realizes what she is capable of achieving. Nevaeh is not simply getting through a difficult subject; she is truly thriving, and I am incredibly proud of the effort, determination, and positive attitude she brings to class. She is a true asset to the classroom; I am impressed with the example and dedication she has given to her academics.

Annie Hale - Senior Student of the Month

Annie is a true pleasure to have in class. Her persona exudes joy and a quiet determination to push herself and those around her towards excellence. She brings positive energy and an inquisitive mind with her each day, often investing in her own education by seeking to understand concepts even when they do not come easy to her at first. As a dedicated student, classmate, and teammate, Annie represents the model Oak Hill student. As a person she treats everyone around her with the utmost kindness and respect, allowing them to feel seen and heard. As a coach, I understand the incredible impact a good captain can have on a team. Annie is a captain of Oak Hill High School, and we are better for it. She is a part of the DNA that makes Oak Hill High School a special place and will undoubtedly impact the next campus upon which she steps foot in much the same way.
