MetUp: Service Learning Day - SUPPLIES DRIVE support needed!

On Fri, February 20, every Met student will participate in a community service event to serve our local communities and spread kindness! Our MetUp for February is based on community building through service learning in our communities!

Our students have indicated their preferences for the location at which they will be serving and assignments will be finalized on Wednesday, Feb 11.

In anticipation of this day, all Met families are encouraged to support a supplies drive to create hygiene kits for two of the locations. All donations can be delivered to your student's Advisor, and Advisory MetUp points are being awarded to those advisories that bring in the most items. Here is a list of items we are collecting and the desired quantity:

  • Packets of sunscreen - 200
  • Packages of body wipes - 200
  • Toothbrushes - 100
  • Toothpaste - 100
  • Deodorant - 100
  • Travel size shampoo - 100
  • Soap - 100
  • Razors - 100
  • Rolls of toilet paper - 100
  • Feminine hygiene - Pads only - 100
  • 2 Gallon Ziplock bags - 100

If you prefer to make a monetary donation toward these items, coordinate with your student's advisor. Met Advisors are being asked to collect funds which can then be used for a larger group purchase of whatever is most needed. In short: we will do the shopping for you! Thank you for your generosity!

Carmen, the Opera - FREE evening show for students - Wed, March 25

All Met students are invited to experience for FREE - Carmen, the famous opera by Bizet, at San Diego Civic Theater on Wednesday, March 25. We will meet here at school at 5:20 pm to depart on a school bus to the Civic Theater. The show runs from 6:30- 9:30. Students will need to be picked up at the Met @ 10pm.

Interested students are encouraged to express their interest and sign up here. Limit 30 students.

Here is more information:

Music by Georges Bizet; Libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac

The most fearless and indomitable heroine in all opera is back! When Carmen tosses a flower to the soldier Don José, he becomes obsessed, leaving his post to join her band of smugglers. But when she loses interest and sets her sights on a bullfighter, Don José may not be able to handle the rejection.

With a score packed with opera classics, including the “Habanera,” the “Toreador Song,” and one of the greatest overtures ever written, you’ll be joining Don José as you fall under the spell of Carmen.

Sung in French with English and Spanish translations projected above the stage.

Performed with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.

Running time: Approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes including one intermission.

Please encourage your student to take advantage of this amazing and FREE cultural opportunity!

SDEA One-Day Strike - Thurs, Feb. 26

San Diego Educator Association (SDEA) members have decided to hold a one-day strike on Thursday, February 26, regarding Special Education staffing issues. This one-day strike is part of a statewide California Teachers Association effort to align educator pay and benefits with cost of living needs, and the CTA has organized economic teacher strikes across the state. Our district has notified families of the one-day strike and affirmed that they stand with teachers in this action and will honor the strike. This means that all district schools, including the Met, will be closed on the day of the strike - Thursday, February 26.

Please note the following impacts:

  • As this is an internship day, students officially should NOT attend their internships. Students should inform their mentors as soon as possible that February 26 is a non-attendance day, which includes internships.
  • Any students who have Mesa College classes that take place on February 26 should still attend those classes, as the strike has no impact on college classes.
  • As school will be closed, students will not be able to access the Met building for any purpose on February 26.
  • Please plan to make alternative arrangements for your students on that day as appropriate.
  • In order to maintain the required days of instruction for this school year, Monday, March 9, will now be designated as a student attendance day (this day was formerly a non-instructional day). Please plan to have your students attend school on March 9.

Financial Aid and Scholarships!

It’s time for our senior students and families to apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships for the 2026-2027 school year! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are now open.

Our Senior Advisors and Mr. Moravec have already assisted students with setting up their FSA ID for the FAFSA application. Parents/Guardians will also need to create their own FSA ID in order to help complete the application for their student. For more information and support, please visit this site and use this application link to access the FAFSA application.

No matter what pathway your student is pursuing, there is financial aid available to help. We strongly encourage all families to apply for financial aid, regardless of income. Completing the FAFSA or CADAA is a requirement for many higher education institutions, especially if your student is seeking merit-based scholarships. Additionally, submitting the FAFSA or CADAA is necessary to be considered for the California Promise Grant at California Community Colleges.

Scholarship Opportunities: Mr. Moravec regularly posts scholarship search links and information for seniors in the Class of 2026 College and Postsecondary Info Google Classroom. Check the top post for the latest links. Don’t miss out on these important opportunities to support your student’s future!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Attendance Reporting Form

Regular and timely attendance at school and internships is one of the most important factors for your student’s success! Students who are regularly tardy or absent from one or more classes are missing valuable learning time and are much more likely to fall behind and struggle in their studies. As such, we will be contacting parents/guardians for your support if your student is struggling with attendance.

This year, we are implementing an Attendance Reporting Google Form linked here. This will allow parents to quickly and simply report a student absence. Please use this form any time your student will be absent for any part of the day (including whole day absences, as well as late arrival and early dismissal), as well as for multi-day absences (e.g., vacations, illness).

If you have any questions about attendance, please contact us at sdmet@sandi.net.

CaliforniaColleges.edu - Check it out!

The Met is proud to be part of SDUSD’s partnership with CaliforniaColleges.edu, which is California’s official college, career, and financial aid planning and application platform. It provides lessons and tools to help students discover goals for life after high school, and make plans to achieve them. It provides a system for students to launch and manage California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), Community College (CC) and financial aid applications. Counselors and families will be able to monitor and support student’s college and financial aid application progress and completion.

The Met's implementation plan will begin with the class of 2026 where students will register and launch their California State University (CSU), University of California (UC) and Community College (CC) applications through CaliforniaColleges.edu. The Met's Counseling Team will work with staff and students to introduce and educate students on how to launch their financial aid (FAFSA or CADAA) and college applications in the fall of 2026.

We encourage all Met students and parents to register for an account (parents can add multiple SDUSD students to monitor their progress) and view the tutorials for college and career planning tools for all grade levels. Students will need to register through their district Clever account, by clicking on the CCGI Tile.

You can find more information about this amazing CaliforniaColleges.edu tool and how to utilize its platform. Learn more here.

Food on Campus - FREE School Meals for All Students!

All Met students are eligible to receive free school meals, including breakfast and lunch every day! We encourage students to eat well so they can stay focused and healthy! Students simply need to come to our office at the designated service times to pick up a meal. We do require students to sign our log when they pick up a meal so that we are keeping accurate counts. Meal times are as follows:

  • School breakfast is available in the office from 8:00am – 8:25am daily.
  • M/W/F lunch from 12:15pm – 12:45pm
  • T/Th lunch available at 11:30am dismissal

In addition, we always have fresh fruit and snacks on hand in the office for students to pick up for a quick energy boost throughout the day. Please encourage your students to take advantage of FREE food on campus!

Students are always welcome to bring lunch from home as another option.

Please note: Mesa College is now back in full session. Students purchasing food in the Mesa Commons need to be mindful of the longer wait times for food so they will not be tardy to their classes, especially Period 4 after lunch. Waiting for Mesa Commons lunch service is NOT A VALID EXCUSE for being tardy to class!

Students are NOT allowed to have food delivered from delivery services (such as DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, and similar apps). Though we are located on a college campus, the Met is a CLOSED campus, and students are not allowed to leave campus during school hours without permission, nor are food deliveries or other unauthorized visitors allowed. Please ensure that your students bring food or lunch money so that they can eat well, be healthy, and stay focused on their studies!

Chromebooks

Please remind your students to bring their FULLY CHARGED Chromebooks to school every day! Our district’s 1-to-1 Chromebook policy enables every student to have a Chromebook checked out to them exclusively. This means that every student can take their Chromebook home every day, and it is their responsibility to bring them back to school charged and ready to work on every day. If your student forgets to bring their Chromebook, we unfortunately do not have extras to loan out. Your student will be asked to call home to ask for their Chromebook to be brought to school. If it cannot be brought to school by parent/guardian, the student will be able to work on assignments in an alternative format.

Daily Schedule

Please review the regular daily schedule for the school year. All students will attend classes on campus from 8:30am to 3:15pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to internships, and ALL students must attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am. NEW students will participate in the Met Gateway Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while RETURNING students will work with their advisor on finding an internship placement. As soon as a student has secured an internship, including a signed contract with the mentor, the student may start attending internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of coming to campus. Our Gateway students are eligible to begin their internships after the conclusion of Gateway, as soon as September 23.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Information

Student drop-off and pick-up is allowed in Lot 1 in the pull-out area in front of I-400, near the bottom of the main staircase. You may also use other areas along Mesa College Circle where there are curb cuts to allow cars to pull off the road. Please DO NOT attempt to drive up to the SD Met building for drop-off or pick-up. If you plan to park and visit the Met, you may park in a 1-hour visitor spot (limited) or use pay stations to purchase an hourly parking permit in Lot 1.

Student Parking Permits

For students who drive to campus and wish to have a parking permit for the semester, the application form is available in the front office. Please bring the completed form with the payment of $40 cash (no card payments are accepted at this time) to the Mesa College police office at Q-100 between 8am and 5pm Mon-Thurs (closed Fridays). The Mesa College is no longer issuing a physical parking permit to keep in your vehicle. Instead, your vehicle will be registered virtually in their new online system for the semester.

We are continuously enrolling new students. Please share this tour schedule with interested families. Encourage them to visit our school website to sign up for the next tour.

Senior Early Dismissal Policy

As part of supporting our 12th graders in having diverse opportunities for success, the Met has an early dismissal policy for qualified seniors. Students and parents/guardians must submit this Senior Early Dismissal application and await approval by the principal before any early dismissal can begin. Please note that the earliest that seniors may be dismissed is 12:10pm, and early dismissal does not apply on MetUp days (one Friday a month) or other special events that require student attendance until the end of the school day. Please refer to this Senior Early Dismissal Policy document for more details.
