Meet the Art Teacher

Hello! I'm Mrs. Bussan, your new art teacher this year! You might recognize my last name because my husband, Mr. Bussan, teaches third grade at Bent. I also taught at Bent a little over twenty years ago and I'm excited to be back! Our daughter's name is Brooke and she'll be a freshman in high school this year. This will be my seventh year teaching elementary art. Last year I taught college Elementary Education majors how to include art into their future classrooms. I'm looking forward to a great year with you, Bent Superstars!

When your young artist brings home their artwork, please take the time to talk to them about what they made, how they made it, and why they made it. Simply saying, "Tell me about your art." will get them talking! Enjoy making art with your child at home and stay positive about your own artmaking. Practice should be a fun learning experience.

I firmly believe that parents, teachers, and students should work as a team to help students reach their full potential. If there are any concerns in the classroom, I will reach out to you to keep you informed and to see if there is anything I can do to help your child succeed. This year, I will be covering a theme or a "big idea" each quarter. These include, Identity, Community, Nature, and Art History. We will be creating art, presenting our artwork, making connections, and responding to art. I will be covering historical and contemporary artists and we will be exploring various materials and processes.

Every day, I will randomly choose a “Secret Superstar”. I will be watching that student carefully and if they are following our ART Expectations, they will be revealed and will get a Starburst or a prize from my prize box! If they aren’t safe, respectful, and responsible, they won’t be revealed!

Once a week I will choose one Superstar from the entire school that really shines brightly, by doing something above and beyond, like helping to clean up a big mess they didn’t make, helping someone else who is having a bad day, or working extra hard at their artwork! This Superstar will receive a certificate for “The Golden Crayon Award” and their name will be put up on a bulletin board!
