Tutorials
Tutorials are a core component of the AVID elective class because they provide a dedicated space for students to collaboratively explore complex academic concepts through inquiry-based learning, allowing them to develop critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of course material, and become more self-directed learners by asking questions and working through challenges with peers and a facilitator, ultimately preparing them for the rigors of college-level work. Let's celebrate our 7-8th graders across the district as they take on rigorous classes with the support of AVID Tutorials.
WWJH sets the foundations of incredibly productive tutorials through their systems and routines.
Pearce Tutorials are highly engaging, and students work through problem solving by asking high level questions.
Special Shout out to the LHHS Tutors that support scholars in their most rigorous classes by engaging in inquiry, problem solving and socratic dialogue. They also attend college visits and mentor our seniors.
Instruction- WICOR
RISD AVID insists on rigor through WICOR.
Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading supports the teacher's craft, fills their tool box with strategies and allows for opportunities to take the content (what students need to know) and make it engaging, immersing the student into the curriculum (the how).
Explore how WICOR supports the Learning Framework and immerses students in their learning:
Wallace Wolves set students up to GROW with this encouraging mindset as soon as they walk through the doors.
WRITING
Students who write, deepen their understanding of the content, communicate their thinking as a content expert, competently and confidently.
North AVID students share their scary stories.
Pearce students taking authentic notes.
Students write summaries at the end of their notes to debrief and process their learning.
INQUIRY
Students who inquire clarify their own thinking, probe other's thinking and solve authentic problems.

Collaboration
Students who collaborate listen effectively to decipher meaning, deepen the learning of others through inquiry and active engagement, and work through identified structures and roles to achieve a common goal.

Yale 5th graders collaborating as they work on their science experiments.
ORGANIZATION
Students who organize develop and use tools to organize their thinking, resources and time effectively to prepare for rigorous courses and engage fully in instruction.
Pearce Planners support students with organizing their time.
Wallace 4th Graders in Ms. Norris' class organize their time, and enjoy crossing off work once they are complete.
Pearce sophomore AVID student organizing her thoughts during her Science class to bring back to the tutorial process.
READING
Students who read activate, engage, and extend beyond the text, making predictions and understanding text structures so that they can question and engage in deep inquiry.
Marking the text and referring directly to the text in authentic dialogue of a socratic seminar helps keep the conversation respectful and provides opportunities for multiple perspectives and discourse.
Northrich students marking the text as they read.
Shout out to Students and Teachers Engaging in WICOR!
We celebrate these North AVID students for showcasing their individual determination and owning their learning!
Congratulations, Aikin Teacher, Mrs. Breton for earning the WICOR Award for excellent collaboration in her class. She was spotted by the Site Team, and we celebrate the way she insists on rigor, and breaks down barriers for her students to gain agency in their learning.
#ThankATeacher
Thank you RISD Teachers who break down barriers, advocate for students, insist on rigor and align the work! We are so thankful for you and your impact on students.

Closing the Opportunity Gap
The mission of AVID is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society. These campuses have gone above and beyond to ensure that students set goals and make choices that support long term aspirations by knowing about opportunities in our world after high school.

CHOICE Days in AVID Elective
What is a CHOICE Day lesson?
A CHOICE Day lesson is: connected to the CCR Framework components, a time for CHOICE:
C: College and career speakers, fairs, and field trips (explore paths and personal fit)
H: Habits and instructional routines (organization, FNT, TAG, goal, and grade checks)
O: Opportunities in our communities (service learning, internships, special events)
I: Inspiring ourselves and others (storytelling and self-identity through emotions, thoughts, and values)
C: Collaboration through the Stages of Building Relational Capacity (build trust through norms, networks, and new perspectives)
E: Exercising our agency (self-advocacy, leadership, and responsible citizenship, including online)

Recruitment for 6th Graders is coming soon!
All 6th graders will have the opportunity to visit their feeder pattern Junior High to hear about all the elective opportunities. During this visit, AVID will share about the AVID Elective. We appreciate our counselors and teachers as they support our sixth graders making choices that will impact their future.
