Expanding opportunities for all learners Expanding opportunities for all learners

As we prepare for the 2026-2027 school year, we are excited to continue strengthening the supports and opportunities available for all students across District 62. Over the past year, the Student Services team has worked closely with staff, families, and educational partners to review and enhance our special education services, social emotional supports and inclusive practices. This work is grounded in our commitment to ensuring every student feels a strong sense of belonging, meaningful connection, and support in their school community.

One exciting next step is the expansion of instructional supportive services to all elementary schools beginning next year. In addition, specialized programming previously limited to a few schools will continue at Cumberland, Terrace and Chippewa, and expand to Forest and Orchard Place. Schools and staff are already actively planning for next year, and teams are excited to welcome new students into their school communities.

We are also proud to introduce STRIVE (Structured Teaching for Readiness, Independence, Voice, and Engagement), the new name for our former Educational Life Skills (ELS) program. This name was selected collaboratively with input from staff and families and reflects our focus on empowering students through communication, independence, engagement and individualized support.

Throughout the year, staff across the district participated in professional learning focused on inclusive instructional practices, differentiation strategies, structured practices, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) supports and student-centered scheduling. These efforts will continue next year as we continue to focus on creating welcoming, supportive and inclusive learning environments.

We are grateful for the ongoing partnership and feedback from families through Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) meetings, focus groups, town halls, and individual conversations. Your collaboration continues to help shape and strengthen our programs and services.

As always, District 62 remains committed to ensuring every student experiences belonging, access to meaningful learning opportunities, and the support needed to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

We look forward to an exciting year ahead!
