Dear Parents and Guardians,

We look forward to welcoming you into our school this week for Parent Teacher Conferences! Meeting with your child's teacher gives you direct insight into your child's academic and social performance at school. It also allows all of us to celebrate the strengths that your child has and work together to focus on how to best support them throughout the remainder of this school year.

The EXCITEMENT of having the Milwaukee Brewers head to the World Series is felt each day in EES! To continue celebrating the Brewer's achievements AND to cheer them on, EES will have a few fun ideas planned for each day of the week (October 26 - 30) that the Brewers are playing in the World Series. Some of those include...a popcorn/Cracker Jack snack, tailgate party over lunch on the blacktop, view the Brewer's journey to the World Series video, sing/listen to classic baseball songs during lunch, and a Bazooka/Big League Chew gum day - yes students will be able to chew gum at school!! We are still in the planning phase of these ideas so details about what will happen on each day will be coming early this week. As always, students are encouraged to dress in Brewer gear or wear blue and yellow as often as they choose to over the next two weeks!

One of our student's FAVORITE events is 'Trunk or Treat' and it will be held on Friday, October 30 in the EES parking lot. Parents that are participating in decorating their trunks may begin arriving at 5:30PM. Students that are joining the fun for a 'trick or treat' should plan to arrive at 6:00PM!

As always, thank you for supporting your child's learning!

Warmly,

Amy Rettler

Principal

Literacy Tips from Mrs. Schmidt

October Writing Tip: Stretch Those Sentences!

Help children expand plain, short thoughts into rich, detailed sentences by answering the 5 Ws (who, what, where, when, why) or using transitional words.

  • K-2 Focus: Add descriptive details by asking where and why.

    • Base sentence: The dog ran.

    • Stretched sentence: The fluffy dog ran across the yard to catch his ball.

  • 3-5 Focus: Combine choppy sentences using conjunctions (and, but, so, because)

    • Base sentences: It rained heavily. The game was cancelled. We played board games.

    • Stretched sentence: Because it rained heavily, the game was canceled, so we played board games.

Home Activity: Sentence Accordian

Write a basic 3-word sentence on a paper strip. Pass it around the family, with each person adding one detail word or phrase to stretch the sentence as long as possible.

Thank you for being our partners in learning!

Counselor's Corner - A Message from Mrs. Theis

A letter went home with all students in grades K-5 introducing a new program being taught in SEL class, A Peaceable Place. Please reach out if you have any questions about it!

In class this month…

  • I talked with all classes about attendance and why it’s important to come to school. Did you know if a student misses 2 days of school per month, that’s 18 days over the course of the academic year? That’s 11% of the school year! Research shows it impacts a student’s learning when they miss 10% or more days.

  • Grades K-5 will be completing the 1st topic in A Peaceable Place which is focused on goal setting.

  • 4K is focusing on feelings - what they are, how to say what we feel, and common times we feel different emotions.

Getting back into the swing of things can be a big transition at the beginning of the year. Here are some tips to help the morning go smoother!

  • Routine. Routines and rituals help kids feel more confident and secure. Try to complete tasks in the same order each morning.

  • Plan/prepare: What can you do the night before? Can lunch be packed the night before? Pick out outfits? Have backpacks packed? Including kids in these tasks can help them eventually become independent.

  • Focus on the non-negotiables. What has to get done before school? Can something wait until after school? Think, what are the 3 most important things that need to be done before going to school? Getting dressed, eating breakfast (or a snack for those non-breakfast eaters), and teeth brushed.

  • Visual prompts. These are especially helpful for neurodivergent kids. It could be pictures of each task being completed to serve as a visual schedule or a picture of the task where the task happens (ie. picture of a child brushing their teeth on the bathroom mirror).

  • Stay calm. We are the person our kids (especially little ones) look to when they are upset. If we meet hiccups in the morning with calmness it can prevent further escalation. Kids rely on co-regulation to calm down their nervous system, being calm will help them calm down too.
