SD Met Family Updates
One student at a time
November 20, 2025
We are so grateful for our SD Met community!
Thanksgiving Break is Nov. 24-28!
News
MetUp Gratitude Potluck! Fri, Nov. 21!
This Friday, November 21, is our annual MetUp Gratitude Potluck! Every year, we celebrate together with food and fun before heading off for our week-long Thanksgiving Break. This year, we are fortunate to be able to host our Potluck in the beautiful Mesa Commons!
All grade levels were assigned different categories of food and supplies to help contribute to our festivities. Please check with your student to see what items they are planning to bring to our Potluck so you can support them.
Dismissal time on Nov. 21 is 1:30pm. Please plan your pickup accordingly. Thank you!
Exhibitions - Dec 11-18
Exhibitions start on December 11!
Exhibitions for this semester will be held over a 5-day period beginning December 11 (skipping Dec 12, our all-school Zoo field trip) and lasting through December 18. Regular classes will NOT be held from December 11-18. Exhibitions are a powerful conclusion to each student's semester-long internship, and a chance for each student to be celebrated and tell their unique story to a panel of adults and peers. As a part of making the Exhibition experience more authentic, we strive to enable as many internship mentors as possible to attend their student's Exhibition. In addition, each student's panel will include a combination of teachers and students who will contribute to assessing the student's presentation. As always, at least one parent/guardian must attend their student's Exhibition, which is why we began reaching out to schedule Exhibitions over a month ago. For 9th graders, the Exhibition format is slightly modified to account for the fact that they started the year in LTI Gateway, and thus had much less time than older students at internships this semester.
Please note these important expectations about Exhibitions:
- Students should present for about 15-20 minutes. This will be followed by questions and feedback from the panel, and then a debrief between the student and advisor.
- On their day of Exhibition, students must attend school for the ENTIRE DAY from 8:30am to 3:15pm. They will be assigned as panelists on THREE (3) other Exhibitions on the same day and MUST fulfill their panelist duties in order to earn credit for their Exhibitions.
- Students are NOT required to attend school on any of the Exhibition days when they are not presenting/paneling. They are allowed to sit as audience members (not panelists) for additional Exhibitions beyond the required 3 where they are panelists.
- Students should attend their internships on Tuesdays and Thursdays during Exhibitions, unless they are scheduled to present their Exhibitions on one of those days, or unless they have previously arranged with their mentors for an earlier end date to their internships.
Please plan your drop-off and pick-up based on your student attending for the full school day on their Exhibition day.
If you have any questions about LTI Projects and Exhibitions, please contact your student’s Advisor. We look forward to welcoming you to campus to celebrate your students!
Food and Safe Parking for Families: Info from SDUSD
Food Banks
We have received many requests for food bank information. There are two primary providers of food resources in San Diego: Feeding San Diego and the San Diego Food Bank. They operate out of various locations around the city. We have provided here two links, in the attached flyer, to find food near you. Simply input the zip code where you are and these locators will tell you where the nearest food banks are located, including days and hours of operation, and any other requirements.
It is important to note that food banks run out of food on distribution days. Families should arrive early with plenty of their own bags and a way to get the food back (ex: wagon or cart).
Safe Parking
We are opening a district-partnered safe parking at the old Central and we wanted to send you the referral form. If you have families in cars who need a place to stay, you can refer them here:
Our Youth in Transition team in Counseling and Student Support Services will do the initial outreach and facilitate the intake process. All you need to do is complete this simple referral form and we will take it from there. We are trying to support families with getting in the lot in the next couple of weeks, so refer as soon as you can!
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Kristy Drake at kdrake@sandi.net.
Celebrations!
Visitors to Campus!
Our senior class has enjoyed hosting three visitors in as many weeks. Each brought expertise in their realms: politics, justice, entrepreneurship.
Manuel Reyes is a policy advisor to San Diego's District 2 City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell. He visited the senior US Government class and discussed local issues. The students were especially interested in local housing policies, peppering him with questions about the current state of housing and homelessness in our city.
Judge Alex Calero visited our seniors as part of the County Court's "Judges in the Classroom." He reviewed how our court system works and then engaged the students in scenarios that challenged them to think critically about how to interpret various laws.
Brad Wise, owner and chef of Trust Group restaurants, spoke with our senior Business students about his career path and the life of an entrepreneur.
Additionally, our Met Media class hosted Noah Harpster, an actor and writer, who discussed the long journey of imagining, writing and then bringing to life the movie "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood." The students were curious about his writing process, how to navigate Hollywood and advice for how to break into film.
It's always so appreciated when experts share their knowledge and experiences with our Met students!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Attendance Reporting Form
Regular and timely attendance at school and internships is one of the most important factors for your student’s success! Students who are regularly tardy or absent from one or more classes are missing valuable learning time and are much more likely to fall behind and struggle in their studies. As such, we will be contacting parents/guardians for your support if your student is struggling with attendance.
This year, we are implementing an Attendance Reporting Google Form linked here. This will allow parents to quickly and simply report a student absence. Please use this form any time your student will be absent for any part of the day (including whole day absences, as well as late arrival and early dismissal), as well as for multi-day absences (e.g., vacations, illness).
If you have any questions about attendance, please contact us at sdmet@sandi.net.
CaliforniaColleges.edu - Check it out!
The Met is proud to be part of SDUSD’s partnership with CaliforniaColleges.edu, which is California’s official college, career, and financial aid planning and application platform. It provides lessons and tools to help students discover goals for life after high school, and make plans to achieve them. It provides a system for students to launch and manage California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), Community College (CC) and financial aid applications. Counselors and families will be able to monitor and support student’s college and financial aid application progress and completion.
The Met's implementation plan will begin with the class of 2026 where students will register and launch their California State University (CSU), University of California (UC) and Community College (CC) applications through CaliforniaColleges.edu. The Met's Counseling Team will work with staff and students to introduce and educate students on how to launch their financial aid (FAFSA or CADAA) and college applications in the fall of 2026.
We encourage all Met students and parents to register for an account (parents can add multiple SDUSD students to monitor their progress) and view the tutorials for college and career planning tools for all grade levels. Students will need to register through their district Clever account, by clicking on the CCGI Tile.
You can find more information about this amazing CaliforniaColleges.edu tool and how to utilize its platform. Learn more here.
Food on Campus - FREE School Meals for All Students!
- School breakfast is available in the office from 8:00am – 8:25am daily.
- M/W/F lunch from 12:15pm – 12:45pm
- T/Th lunch available at 11:30am dismissal
In addition, we always have fresh fruit and snacks on hand in the office for students to pick up for a quick energy boost throughout the day. Please encourage your students to take advantage of FREE food on campus!
Students are always welcome to bring lunch from home as another option.
Please note: Mesa College is now back in full session. Students purchasing food in the Mesa Commons need to be mindful of the longer wait times for food so they will not be tardy to their classes, especially Period 4 after lunch. Waiting for Mesa Commons lunch service is NOT A VALID EXCUSE for being tardy to class!
Students are NOT allowed to have food delivered from delivery services (such as DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, and similar apps). Though we are located on a college campus, the Met is a CLOSED campus, and students are not allowed to leave campus during school hours without permission, nor are food deliveries or other unauthorized visitors allowed. Please ensure that your students bring food or lunch money so that they can eat well, be healthy, and stay focused on their studies!
Chromebooks
Please remind your students to bring their FULLY CHARGED Chromebooks to school every day! Our district’s 1-to-1 Chromebook policy enables every student to have a Chromebook checked out to them exclusively. This means that every student can take their Chromebook home every day, and it is their responsibility to bring them back to school charged and ready to work on every day. If your student forgets to bring their Chromebook, we unfortunately do not have extras to loan out. Your student will be asked to call home to ask for their Chromebook to be brought to school. If it cannot be brought to school by parent/guardian, the student will be able to work on assignments in an alternative format.
Daily Schedule
Please review the regular daily schedule for the school year. All students will attend classes on campus from 8:30am to 3:15pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to internships, and ALL students must attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am. NEW students will participate in the Met Gateway Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while RETURNING students will work with their advisor on finding an internship placement. As soon as a student has secured an internship, including a signed contract with the mentor, the student may start attending internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of coming to campus. Our Gateway students are eligible to begin their internships after the conclusion of Gateway, as soon as September 23.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Information
Student drop-off and pick-up is allowed in Lot 1 in the pull-out area in front of I-400, near the bottom of the main staircase. You may also use other areas along Mesa College Circle where there are curb cuts to allow cars to pull off the road. Please DO NOT attempt to drive up to the SD Met building for drop-off or pick-up. If you plan to park and visit the Met, you may park in a 1-hour visitor spot (limited) or use pay stations to purchase an hourly parking permit in Lot 1.
Student Parking Permits
For students who drive to campus and wish to have a parking permit for the semester, the application form is available in the front office. Please bring the completed form with the payment of $40 cash (no card payments are accepted at this time) to the Mesa College police office at Q-100 between 8am and 5pm Mon-Thurs (closed Fridays). The Mesa College is no longer issuing a physical parking permit to keep in your vehicle. Instead, your vehicle will be registered virtually in their new online system for the semester.

Senior Early Dismissal Policy
As part of supporting our 12th graders in having diverse opportunities for success, the Met has an early dismissal policy for qualified seniors. Students and parents/guardians must submit this Senior Early Dismissal application and await approval by the principal before any early dismissal can begin. Please note that the earliest that seniors may be dismissed is 12:10pm, and early dismissal does not apply on MetUp days (one Friday a month) or other special events that require student attendance until the end of the school day. Please refer to this Senior Early Dismissal Policy document for more details.
