Oakhurst Weekly
Welcome to the Crew!
Please join us in welcoming two new staff members to our Oakhurst Crew. Emily Opalinski joins us as a kindergarten paraprofessional in Ms. Paden's class, and Jennifer Bragg, the friendly face you'll see in the front office, is our new Administrative Assistant.
Ms. Bragg is your new contact for all things attendance, transcripts/records, residency, and general information. You can message her at jennifer.bragg@csdecatur.net.
Be sure to give them a warm Oakhurst welcome. We're so happy they're here!
Announcements
The Oakhurst Birthday Book program gives you the opportunity to both honor your child on their birthday and help our library collection continue to grow. To honor your child with a birthday book donation, send $20 exact cash or check (made payable to Oakhurst Elementary School) by Friday, September 12. We welcome friends or other family members to participate in this program as well. Families are not limited to one book.
After receiving your donation, your child will choose a new library book during their birthday month during library time. We will affix a book dedication label to the inside of the book your child chooses, indicating that the book is donated in their honor to our library. We would like for you to write a special message that will be printed on the label.
Your child may keep the new book for two weeks before returning it to the library. This book checkout will be in addition to the regular library book(s). We’ll also send you a pic of your child with the book!
This form was sent home in today's folder and will not be sent home again at any time this year. You may print one here. This form must be submitted, along with payment, by Friday, September 12th. August birthdays will be celebrated in September and June and July birthdays will be celebrated in May.
Oakhurst Gifted Program Recommendations
Each fall semester the Gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it in to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 1. No additional information is needed.
The Gifted & Talented Specialists for Oakhurst are Amanda Lockwood and Courtney Hartnett. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact the Gifted & Talented Specialist for your school at alockwood@csdecatur.net or visit the following website: https://www.csdecatur.net/our-district-5f/departments/teaching-and-learning/gifted-and-talented-services
1st Grade CogAT Testing Starts September 3
From September 3-5, all 1st-grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Unlike traditional achievement tests, which measure how well a student has learned the curriculum, the CogAT assesses a child’s ability to reason abstractly and recognize patterns and relationships in the world around them. Teachers can use CogAT scores to better understand a child’s pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Our school district also uses CogAT scores to screen for cognitively gifted students.
Food Insecurity Request Form
Oakhurst families, please complete and submit this food insecurity request form if your student is experiencing food insecurity within the home and is in need of some supplemental weekend snacks.
The Decatur Education Foundation supplies Oakhurst with snack bags for any student in need. This request form will go directly to our school counselor, Ms. King, and she will send home a snack bag with your student every Friday. Please go through each week's snack bag to remove any snack you may not want your child to have due to allergy concerns, etc.
