Loess Hills Lynx
SEPTEMBER 2019
From our Principal Mr. Beeck
Dear Loess Hills Students and Families,
The beginning of the school year has gone really well. I am happy to see many familiar faces of students and families along with many new ones as well. Welcome everyone to the Loess Hills family.
After our first couple of days, traffic patterns have improved and everyone has remained safe. As long as everyone correctly uses our drop-off lane for drop-off and pick-up only, things flow smoothly and it only takes a few minutes for everyone to be on their way. Since there are many vehicles in our parking lot, I would suggest parents and students find a consistent meeting place a block or so from school, so that the amount of cars in the parking lot becomes less. Thanks for staying patient everyone.
Breakfast is from 8:00-8:25 a.m. so make sure to arrive early enough for your children to finish eating when the bell rings at 8:35 for the start of school. Beyond the Bell begins at 6:30 a.m. for parents who must drop their children off before school begins. Please contact the office if you wish to know more about the program.
If your children are not eating breakfast or part of the Beyond the Bell program, please do not drop them off at school until after 8:15. There is no staff supervision until 8:15 on the playground.
Please do not block traffic that is entering the parking lot; do not park in the drop-off lane, or other no-parking locations, and please drive slowly.

District News
September Awareness Month
The Sioux City Community School District recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success. So, we’ve joined a nationwide effort to celebrate Attendance Awareness Month in September. Nationwide, far too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing more than 7 days during the entire year for any reason, excused or unexcused. Research shows that’s the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance.
During Attendance Awareness Month, we are asking you to help us reduce absenteeism locally by taking these steps:
• Build a habit of regular attendance.
• If there are challenges that make it difficult for your student to attend school, let us know so we can help.
School Safety
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. During the year, our school has fire, tornado, and intruder drills. The drills ensure our students and staff are prepared for potential emergencies. Watch for future newsletter updates that give you information on our drills, so you can continue the safety conversations with your child(ren) at home.
Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered.
For more information about school safety, visit our website at: http://www.siouxcityschools.org/safety/ or speak to our principal.
Seguridad Escolar
