Juntos, CREEMOS. ¿Y ustedes, CREEN?

—Sr. Prosapio

Director, Escuela Primaria Berry

Berry Families,

I want to share a powerful idea from Brené Brown:
“We aren't curious about something we are unaware of or know nothing about. We have to have at least some level of knowledge before we can get curious. There is growing evidence that curiosity and knowledge grow together.”

This reminds us that curiosity grows from experience. When children see, touch, explore, and try new things, they build “anchors” in their brains. These anchors help connect new learning and spark a desire to keep learning.

Simple experiences can make a big difference. A visit to the Tijuana River Valley Estuary, a walk on the beach, exploring tide pools, cooking together, or even building with boxes at home all help children learn and grow. These real-life experiences cannot be replaced by technology. Kids need to feel, see, and interact with the world around them.

If you ever need ideas, please reach out to me or your child’s teacher. We are here to work together to inspire curiosity, learning, and growth in every Berry Bear.

Together, we BELIEVE. Do you BELIEVE?

Families. As we move toward the end of the 25/26 School year (yea, I know I can't believe I am saying this already, but we are only about 45 days of school left). We are also beginning to plan for end of the year assessments. At Berry we do several things to assess what the students have learned. The teachers do some assessments in their classes, we do statewide testing in Reading and Writing and Math, 5th graders take science and PE assessments, and our Multilingual Learners have been taking the ELPAC to show their progress in developing English skills. I am going to use this section to give you hints, tips, and ideas for how to better prepare your student for this, so that they are ready to show their very best.

The most important part of any assessment is not just what students know, but how they show it. We need all of us—both at school and at home—to help students come in with the mindset to do their very best. When students take their time, think carefully, and try their hardest, we get a clear picture of what they have learned. If they rush, guess, or give up, it is harder for us to understand what they truly know. These assessments help teachers plan how to support each student, but that only works if students give their best effort. The number one message we can all reinforce is simple: come ready, try your hardest, and show what you know. Please help us with this going forward over the next few weeks.

Berry Community Schools Update

We are excited to share some of the amazing work happening at Berry through our Community Schools efforts!

Learning & Growing Together
Last month, a team of Berry staff, parents, and community members attended the CABE Conference in San Francisco. This opportunity, supported by our Community Schools grant, allowed us to learn new ways to better support our students and families. We brought back ideas focused on belonging, strong family partnerships, and systems that help every student succeed no matter where they go.

The Berry Den (Room 4) is Growing!
We are currently redesigning the Berry Den to better serve our families! This space will include:
• Family resources & information
• A welcoming meeting/training area
• A kids’ corner
• A space for volunteers

This is your space! Please stop by, share your ideas, and let us know what you would love to see in the room.

Here to Support You
If your family needs support such as school supplies, clothing, food, or housing resources, please stop by the Berry Den. If we don’t have what you need, we will help connect you with community partners who can.

Community Schools Survey Update
Thank you, Berry Families and Staff, for your participation! Here’s where we are so far:
• Students (Grades 4–6): 94% complete
• Berry Staff Team: 77% complete
• Families: 66% complete
• TK–3rd Grade Students: Fishbowl sessions are coming soon!

Connection & Conversations
Our monthly Connection & Conversations gatherings have been filled with meaningful discussions and valuable feedback from our families—thank you for sharing your voice with us!

Through these conversations, families have shared interest in upcoming parent workshops focused on:
• How to talk to your child about health and growing up
• Navigating conversations about drugs and making safe choices

We appreciate your honesty and partnership as we work to bring these important resources and trainings to our Berry community.

Ongoing Learning
Our Community Schools team continues to grow! Mr. Prosapio and I attend monthly trainings to strengthen our work and bring even more resources and support to our Berry families.

Health Services at Berry
Last month, we partnered with the San Ysidro Health Mobile Unit to provide free vaccines on campus—thank you to all who participated!

• Estudiantes (grados 4–6): 94% completado
• Personal de Berry: 77% completado
• Familias: 66% completado
• Estudiantes TK–3: ¡Las sesiones tipo “fishbowl” comienzan pronto!

With only 44 days of school left EVERY SINGLE DAY COUNTS! Please make sure that you help us and get your student to school every day. Look at your child's attendance and if they reach 18 days of absences (Excused or Unexcused it doesn't matter) for the year they will be considered CHRONIC ABSENT for this school year. If you want to ask about this or inquire if you can get an independent study contract please reach out to Ms. Corina in the office.
