The Jacobs Journal

A Note from the Principal
Day 104/180
Attached to this Journal you will find a letter from our Superintendent that includes a link to our School Report Card, provided annually by the state. When reviewing the report, you will see our school’s accountability percentile, which reflects how the Jacobs School is performing overall compared to other schools that administer the MCAS assessments within our cohort. The Jacobs is part of the largest cohort in the state, consisting of 1,216 schools. Our current rating of 69 places us in the top third of schools within this largest cohort, in what is widely recognized as the strongest state for education in the country. While we are proud of this achievement, our work continues. Our goal is to rise into the top quarter of schools by the end of this year. We firmly believe that with our talented staff, hardworking students, and supportive families, this is an attainable goal. This progress is a reflection of our collective effort and the strong partnership between home and school that continues to drive our success.
To that point, I was very pleased with our students' effort and engagement throughout this week, as it typically proves challenging with vacation on the horizon. To say I am grateful for the efforts of both our students and staff throughout this year would be a massive understatement. Their commitment to elevating their learning, growth, curiosity, and supporting one another continues to make the Jacobs School a special place each and every day. In celebration of everyone’s hard work, tomorrow we will end the school day with our 3rd Annual Staff vs. Student Basketball Game. Represented by our sixth and seventh graders and teacher volunteers, this tradition has quickly become a favorite. The series currently sits at a 1 to 1 tie, with students claiming last year’s victory. Who will take the lead this year? We will find out tomorrow.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the Jacobs community. I hope everyone enjoys a safe, restful, and enjoyable vacation week.
-Mr. Shaw

New England Free Jacks Visit Jacobs!
Last Friday was a crazy day at the Jacobs School! Besides our monthly JES Spirit Day/Assembly, we also had the 100th Day of School, NE Patriots Spirit Day AND a visit from the New England Free Jacks, the professional rugby team based in Quincy! Players, coaches and trainers presented to both JES and JMS assemblies, and spent the rest of the day working (and playing) with students in the gymnasium and in classrooms. If your children didn't already fill you in on the excitement, please ask them about the Free Jacks visit!
We have some photos from their visit here, and if your family wants to see the team in action, use this link to purchase discount tickets to games!
PreK Parking Lot Safety
Just a friendly reminder:
Please be aware that we have multiple school vans dropping off and picking up preschoolers. With four preschool classes arriving and dismissing each day, our parking lot is very busy, and we want to ensure the safety of all children.
When picking up or dropping off students, please do not park in the fire lane (next to the sidewalk closest to the school), or in front of or between the school vans. Please also do not block the entrance or exit point of the bus lot. School staff must be able to safely unload and load students into the vans and properly secure them in seatbelts and car seats. In Massachusetts, it is unlawful to pass a school van or school bus when the lights are flashing.
Please share this information with anyone who may pick up your child at school, including babysitters, grandparents, or other family members. We ask everyone to be considerate of others waiting for parking spaces. We know families are busy and often in a hurry, and we thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during arrival and dismissal.
