THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - October 3, 2025
Dear HCS Families,
At HCS, the safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority. We’d like to take a moment to share two important reminders where family partnership is essential: technology use and bus safety.
Technology Safety
We know that technology can be both a powerful learning tool and a source of risk for young people. We encourage all families to be proactive in monitoring your child’s device use. Of particular concern are companion chatbots that are circulating widely. These platforms can present serious dangers, especially for our most vulnerable students, and often operate outside the safeguards built into school-monitored platforms. We ask that you stay informed about the apps and tools your child is using and have open conversations at home about online safety and healthy boundaries. As a school and a district, we are using our firewalls to filter and block any of these websites that we are aware of, but unfortunately new sites arise everyday. Parents can sign up for the Common Sense "Playbook" which sends digital literacy tips.
Bus Safety
Riding the school bus is an extension of our school day, and we rely on a collective effort to keep it safe. Our bus drivers have one critical responsibility: to drive safely and ensure that every student arrives at and from school without incident. Their job is challenging, and they need the full cooperation of students and support from families. As a community, we ask for your partnership: if you see something, say something. If you hear something, say something. Here is a link to our form. Please fill it out if you hear of an incident regarding student safety. Together, we can ensure that every student feels safe on the bus.
Thank you for working alongside us to support the health, safety, and success of all students.
Best,
Tim, Alexis and Alicia

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Thanks to the generous support from our community, PiE (Partners in Education) was able to present HCS Principals with two checks designated to enhance student experiences and support families in need. One check will help fund educational field trips, giving students the opportunity to explore learning beyond the classroom, while the other will go toward assisting HCS families facing financial challenges. These contributions are only possible because of your continued support of PiE and your dedication to the HCS community. THANK YOU for making a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and their families!

TRANSCEND VISIT & STUDENT FOCUS GROUPS
As part of CVSD’s focus on co-creating engaging student experience, a team of administrators, curriculum leaders, and our partners from Transcend toured classrooms in every school across the district this week. In addition to observing classes, clubs, and activities, the planning team hosted 15 focus groups that welcomed more than 100 students. They explored everything from how and where students see connections in their learning to one thing students might change about school to make it better match who they are and what they need.
This week’s work was just one step on our journey to co-create actions that channel our energy, creativity, and resources where they matter most; including to honor identity, foster connection, build proficiency and inspire direction across CVSD.
