A Note From the Principal...

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe we are nearing the halfway point in the year!

This month we share with you a new program started in our school to expose our students to the many possibilities of their future. Schools can be a huge connector to fulfilling basic needs and wants, especially in the winter and holiday season. Please review below the ways we can be of assistance. We also want to make sure we have your help in a safe pick-up and drop-off by parking clear and away from our bus zones out front as marked by our new signs.

On behalf of the entire Grimsrud staff, I want to extend warm wishes to each and every one of you for the happiest of holidays, a peaceful and relaxing winter break, and a joyous season spent with family and friends. May your holidays be filled with laughter and love.

Exposing Kids to Future Careers

Grimsrud is proud to share a new opportunity for kids that has started- Career Café.

Under the leadership of our school counselor, Mrs. Westergren, students have a "taste" of different careers like going to a restaurant. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 come to the library with their lunch and listen to a variety of speakers talk about their careers.

A few careers that have already been in the school are a firefighter and a nurse. In the future we have a zoologist and a police officer on the schedule with many more to come! Some of the things our speakers are talking about is how they chose this career, what kind of training/schooling did it take to get to the career, and what their everyday-to-day looks like. Since it is scheduled for every other Wednesday, students get the chance to go to about every 4th speaker. The kids have been enjoying it and they have been asking some great questions!

If you have a really unique job and would like to come in and talk to the students about your career, please reach out as I know the students have been loving learning about this topic!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the counselor at 701.323.1135 or ramona_westergren@bismarckschools.org

A Note From Our Counselor A Note From Our Counselor

Hello from Mrs. Westergren!

We are almost halfway done with the school year! Time is flying by. As the school counselor, I support students in their academic and social/emotional development. Here are some of the things your student may be learning in counselor this month:

  • Identifying feelings in ourselves and other
  • Naming our triggers and coping skills we can use
Besides classroom counseling, I also work one-on-one with students and small groups.

Bus Loading Zones

PLEASE AVOID BUS AREAS OUT FRONT!

No matter how quick you may intend, please do not park, drop off, or pick up in our bus loading zone (as marked now with new signs pictured). This is a huge safety issue for our staff and students. This parking area is

reserved for the 6 busses that come in and out throughout each day for our BECEP and K-5 students.

U-Turns

Please also refrain from U-turns in pick up/drop off areas around our school for the safety of students and teachers crossing the street. We have had many instances reported of police ticketing for seeing this occur and would like to keep money in your pocket while also keeping our students safe!

District Visit Feedback Results

Recently a District Team visited each elementary school to review schoolwide social emotional supports and programs in place. District delegates met with our Grimsrud team to review current school data, interview students and staff, and observe the use of our social emotional supports.

Below you will find the highlights they acknowledged. Some considerations or suggestions involved increasing the sharing and review of data as well as continuing to pursue and create an English Learner (EL) mentoring program with Century High School students that increases a sense of belonging and support for our multilingual students and families!

1. Write a Winter or Christmas Poem

Think of words that make you and your family think of winter or Christmas. Start your poem with "It's Winter outside when…" or "It's Christmas at home when…". Then add your descriptive words into sentences, and read it as a family!

You can also write an acrostic poem that starts with each letter in WINTER or CHRISTMAS.

2. Read Winter or Christmas themed-books - A few of my favorites are pictured below!

Family Math Battle!

The holidays are such a wonderful time for family and spending time together. Here is an easy and inexpensive game you can make at home with a deck of cards and some tape.

I wish the merriest of holidays for all of you!

Play Double-it! War

Using a regular deck of cards, masking tape, and a marker, you can make a math game for home.

Step 1: Alter the deck changing the Aces to 1's, Queens to 12's, Jacks to 11's and the King becomes a Double-it card, with masking tape and a marker.

Step 2: Shuffle the deck and deal the cards out equally to players.

How to play: Each player flips 2 cards from their face down pile in front of them. Add the cards together, whoever has the largest sum wins all the cards. If a Double-it card is turned, the player flips one more card, adds the cards and doubles the sum for their score.

If there is a tie, and it is the highest sum, it is a War. Lay 3 cards face down and 2 face up, following the same rules. Whoever has the largest sum gets ALL the cards.

Play until one player has all the cards or set a timer.
