Principal's Update

We had another great week at Braintree, in spite of the rain. Primary grade students had a wonderful time at the Montshire Museum of Science alongside the RUHS community service class on Tuesday. Believe it or not, we are starting to think about end of year activities and planning for the 23-24 school year. Sixth graders had their "Step Up Day" this morning, where they toured RUHS, met teachers, and discussed seventh grade expectations.

Please join me in celebrating Braintree's incredible teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week next week! Thanks to our family council, Partners in Education, and generous donations from the community, we have activities planned for each day of the week to honor the dedication and hard work of our educators. Speaking from personal experience, a kind note means the world. If your child's teacher is making a difference in their life, let them know!

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you next Wednesday evening for the primary grades music concert!

No Mow May

Thanks to 6th graders Kiara and Jenny, Braintree is participating in No Mow May. The girls wrote a convincing letter to our facilities crew with reasons why we should leave a patch of campus unmowed. In their own words:

"We want to let the honey bees, bumblebees and some of Vermont’s 400 native bees visit the flowers in that zone. We are hoping that the dandelions, daisies, small violets, clover and other flowers grow there! We are asking to do this in May because it is early in spring and food for pollinators is common yet. Bees need pollen and the wildflowers in this NO MOW MAY zone will help get food! "

Sixth Grade Graduation Slide Show

The 6th grade students are creating a slideshow for graduation! It would be great if each graduate could collect 10-15 photos celebrating their accomplishments throughout elementary school. No naked baby pics, please.

Please send any photos to Ms. Emma ejanicki@orangesouthwest.org . If a student has paper photos they can bring them to school to be scanned. If you have any questions please email kbranstetter@orangesouthwest.org.

Cognia Testing

As you may have heard in a recent email from Superintendent Millington, Vermont's new end-of-year assessment is called Cognia. Students in grades 3-6 will take the Cognia assessment in literacy and math, and fifth graders will also take science. Each topic includes 2 test sessions. The entire literacy assessment (both sessions) are designed to take about 170 minutes total, math 125 minutes, and science 150 minutes. The data we receive from these assessments will help guide instructional and curricular decisions at the school and district level. As we near the testing window (April 12-May 26), you will see more information from teachers and myself about how to be best prepared. Students are taking practice tests so there are no surprises on test day and they familiarize themselves with the testing platform.

We have test sessions scheduled. If a student doesn't complete the assessment in the provided time, they will have up to five total school days to finish. (Students who require accommodations like one-on-one testing may test on a different day than below due to staffing needs.)

  • Grade 3
    • ELA 4/12 & 5/3
    • Math 5/11 & 5/19
  • Grades 4-6
    • ELA 4/13 & 5/8
