Stapleton Plan for Communication on Progress

Our Stapleton School Council met on Monday, January 27, 2020 to review the data shared in Dr. Tremblay's communication from 1/20/20. The purpose of the discussion was to be sure the data shared actually told the story we wanted to tell and what it would mean if we were improving. We talked about the fact that the numbers don't really tell us this, but that it is more about the feeling/culture of the school. We're continuing to wonder how to determine when the feeling changes. For now, we'd like to continue to track the data and review it monthly.

Below is an outline of our plan:

Goal: Provide frequent and relevant communication to the school community that is transparent, consistent and summarizes the action steps and improvements being made daily, weekly, and or monthly to improve the safety of students and staff.

Background: The Stapleton School Council members met on January 27, 2020 to review the recent action steps taken and look more closely at the data shared in previous communications to clarify, ask questions and confirm that the information being shared exemplifies change at our school. There was discussion about the accuracy of the data based on lapse in data collection.

Summary of feedback/lingering questions from council members:

  • Provide monthly data updates to the school community for the time being.

    • Support Call (walkie call) average

    • Number of evacuations by grade level and time out of class

    • Number of staff injuries by month

    • Number of student to student injuries by month

    • Summary of staff increases/departures

    • Stapleton monthly enrollment totals (to include students entering and exiting)

    • Monthly School Wide Information System (SWIS)* data referral summary by school, grade level, and subgroups (students on IEPs, students not on IEPs and students in the ED program).

    • Programming updates including additional supports provided to students, staff or families like professional development, workshops, etc.

  • Provide a narrative and context to the data and how it is used to determine successes and next steps for students and staff

  • Add the number of days in a month to help when sharing monthly data over time

  • Correspondence has been lengthy- administration will work to design communication in a way that is more appealing including bolding, highlighting, summarizing

  • How can we better utilize the walkie call data to support students and staff? Is there a way to include staff in tracking and gathering this data to include a narrative? How can we be more specific about the level of support needed (the need to be aware that a student is in the hallway vs. a crisis response)?

  • How can we capture the “emotional state” of the building? (one thought is the Panorama Survey, but are there other less formal ways to check-in and also provide support)

  • Council members want to extend meeting times from 1.0 hours to 1.5 hours to allow for further discussion.

  • How can we also consistently share the positives happening at Stapleton?

Next Steps for School Council: In addition to reviewing and providing feedback on the data and narratives shared in the “communication on progress”, the council felt the summary of SWIS data was especially helpful and this will be the focus of our next meeting on Wednesday, February 12th, 5:30-7:00pm (before PTO).

*Through SWIS, school staff enter office discipline referrals online. The data are summarized to provide information about individual students, groups of students, or the entire student body over any time period.

Stapleton Family Workshop Series

A series of parent workshops are being coordinated this winter and spring for Stapleton families aimed at addressing topics parents are requesting and supporting the continued growth of the inclusive culture at Stapleton. Childcare, translations, and snacks will be provided.

Last night there was a great turn-out for the first workshop entitled, "Supporting the Anxious Child." Here is the presentation shared by the presenter, Donna Shea from The Peter Pan Center. If you went and want to share a take-aways with other families, please add your comments to this google doc!

We are excited to announce that we secured our second workshop entitled, Maximizing Children's Resiliency in School, will be presented by Elizabeth Englander from The Marc Center on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, from 7:00pm-8:30pm at Stapleton. An official invitation, workshop description and RSVP will be sent out shortly.

In addition, we'd like to continue the Workshop Series with topics that meet your needs and interests. Please review the topics and descriptions on this form and let us know your thoughts.
