I've included this important information in the athletics section of the newsletter. Everyone who loves sports and competition, including me, should take the time to read and reflect upon the message.

Staff Member of the Month: Jake Deviney
He is always so enthusiastic about his classes and athletics, and passes that feeling on to the kids. They love going to his class each and every day, he teaches and keeps them busy from bell to bell. Coach is both an authoritative figure and an approachable one the kids love and trust. He has managed to cultivate great relationships with the students and teachers, as well as set them on a path to success. He invests a lot of his time in our school and kids.
----Jasmine Quinonez, Freshman English
I chose Mr. Deviney's class because he has great rapport with the students of PHS. There have been times in my career I have seen teachers that students love, but the teacher does not have high standards of rigor for their students. I have seen teachers that are their students’ friend as opposed to their teacher/mentor. This was not the case with Deviney’s class. He has great relationships with his students, but he also has high expectations for them.

SCHOOL SAFETY UPDATES: storm season and risk assessments.
The Department of Homeland Security will conduct an onsite Risk Assessment of our campus in the coming days. This is a routine assessment and will provide important feedback and a comprehensive report detailing with safety suggestions and best practices. This is part of an nation-wide initiative by the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a Risk Assessment in every school in the United States. We welcome this opportunity to ensure our school is a safe as possible for students, staff, and visitors.

High School Sports and Sportsmanship
Recently I had the opportunity to participate in a conference call with principals and athletic directors across the state. This was conducted by the OSSAA and the topic was sportsmanship and specifically abuse of officials at high school sporting contests. Please know this is not directed specifically at our fans. In fact, I truly believe we have some of the best fans in the state. Our fans are passionate about their teams and Purcell has a long history of supporting it's school and athletic programs in a positive and encouraging manner.
However I agree strongly with the premise of the article I've linked below and I encourage all fans to read. We all must do better. As a head basketball coach for 12 years there are many instances I regret in regards to my own behavior towards officials. In the end, I discovered that yelling at refs was not productive and I truly believe it doesn't help a team's cause. More importantly it's not in the spirit of sportsmanship and certainly wasn't a positive example for my players.
For the last decade we have heard warnings of a soon to arrive official shortage. It's here and it is a crisis. We will soon face the reality of games being impacted by a shortage of referees and officials. There are multiple reasons for officials exiting the game: lack of pay, travel, etc. However the primary reason we are losing officials and not attracting new ones is the verbal abuse, and sometimes worse, they face nightly in stadiums and arenas across the state. It's gotten out of control. We must do better.
I love high school sports. Whether as an administrator, coach, or former player, I've attended thousands of games the past 40 years. There is nothing more exciting than a small school athletic contest with the passionate fans and rowdy student sections. Emotions will run high and all of us are capable of losing control and yelling or screaming things we normally wouldn't. I've certainly been guilty myself of losing control of my emotions and screamed at refs. But I was wrong and it's simply wrong to yell at referees during games. It needs to stop. We must do better.
We have an exciting few weeks ahead with two basketball programs looking to make deep runs into the playoffs. Undoubtedly there will be some exciting nights as our teams battle to make the state tournament. We need your support and we need your passion for the games. But all of us need to do better in regards to our treatment of game officials. Cheer for your team, be loud, and have fun. However let's all pledge to do better when it comes to yelling at the refs.
