Elementary Students Learning about Podcasting
During the spring semester, a group of innovative NC Cyber Academy Elementary School students - under the guidance of their teacher, Teresa Meadows - have been learning about producing content such as podcasts.
The students are calling themselves the "Pod Squad!"
“The club is about various podcasts - hence the name Pod Squad,” Mrs. Meadows explained. “ The-co host chooses the topic and researches the subject, reminds the group what a podcast is, introduces the site, and reads some mystery questions to get participants to guess the topic. Then I start the video that is usually linked to a podcast. The co-host is then flooding the chat with interesting facts about the topic, such as dolphins. Then we usually end with a gimkit. I thought this would be a way to get students to practice leadership skills."
We salute Mrs. Meadows and her students for this innovative approach to early learning!

High School Students, Staff Enjoy In-Person Field Trips
Just prior to the start of the winter weather madness that enveloped North Carolina for much of late January and early February , the North Carolina Cyber Academy High School hosted a series of in-person field trips and service events all over the state!
Students, staff, and families bowled in Greensboro, ice skated in Winston-Salem, visited Korner’s Folly in Kernersville, volunteered at the Humane Society in New Bern, jumped and flipped around on trampolines at SkyZone, held a Blood Drive in Holly Springs, played pinball and other fun games in Hendersonville, learned about local history at the Cumberland County Public Library in Fayetteville, and toured the Raleigh Museum.
It was a great day of fun and learning for our amazing High School students!

NC Cyber Academy honors CTE Month, Highlights Tremendous CTE Growth!
The North Carolina Cyber Academy is proud to celebrate CTE (Career and Technical Education (CTE) month, and our hard-working students and teachers who have made our school one of the beacons of CTE instruction in our state.
NC Cyber was recognized in the fall of 2025 by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for having the largest Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program in the State of North Carolina for Charter schools.
As of the fall of 2025, NC Cyber enrolled approximately 1,250 enrollments in CTE. The next biggest program - the Triangle Math and Science Academy, which has been established for many more years than NC Cyber - has approximately 1,100 students enrolled in its CTE offerings.
NCDPI officials agreed that the North Carolina Cyber Academy High School is now competing with regular local education agency (LEA) CTE programs in regards to size, credentials earned, pathways offered, etc.
“I am pleased to share that North Carolina CTE students earned a record 382,964 industry recognized credentials during the 2024-2025 school year. That's the highest total in the state's history, and a 6.9% increase over last year,” said North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction Maurice “Mo” Green in a press conference Wednesday, February 4 in Raleigh.
Mr. Green indicated that the statewide CTE attainment rate for North Carolina public school students reached 59% in 2024-25 - up from 53% in the 2023-24 school year.
“That means that students are earning nearly six out of every 10 credentials available to them through their career and technical education coursework,” the State Superintendent explained.
For the 2025-26 school year, NC Cyber Academy High School is providing a total of 29 CTE classes, including 14 new classes! Learn more below!

The week of February 23-27, the North Carolina Cyber Academy celebrated FFA Week as we honored the impact of agricultural education and the leadership, growth, and career success it builds every day!
The National FFA Organization is more than blue jackets and livestock shows — it’s about developing premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture.
Students participated in FFA-themed dress-up days, activities, and special events that highlight the importance of agriculture in our community and beyond. From Blue & Gold pride to trivia, throwbacks, career exploration, and future goals, this week showcased the leadership, creativity, and agricultural passion of our members!
The National FFA Organization is built on Premier Leadership, Personal Growth, and Career Success, and we saw all three in action this week.

NC Cyber High School Students Honored for Poetry, Senior Portfolio Work
The North Carolina Cyber Academy is proud to honor three of its High School students - Olivia Clements, Ula Ashaif, and Genesis Blandin - who were all statewide winners in the Young Authors Contest, sponsored by the North Carolina Reading Association.
“All three of these young ladies are phenomenal writers. They pour their hearts into their writing, and it shows! I am so proud of each of them,” said NC Cyber High School English Teacher Mrs. Lisa Ragland.
Olivia Clements is new to NC Cyber Academy this year, and she has really shown her skills as a writer and a leader. She took Creative Writing 1 this year.
Ula is a senior who, according to Mrs. Ragland, was a bright light in Creative Writing 1 with a strong voice!
Genesis is also a senior in our Class of 2026, and is one of the three editors of Scribble Society, the Creative Writing club at the NC Cyber Academy High school. Genesis has taken all three levels of Creative Writing, 1, 2, and 3 during her time as an Owl!
Olivia, Ula, and Genesis will be recognized at a ceremony in March, and their writing will be published in a state anthology! Congratulations published authors! We are so proud of you!
The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers hosts the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which honors high school students. NC Cyber Academy freshman Kimberly Yelverton earned Honorable Mention recognition for her collection of poetry, including “The Ghostly Kiss” and “Flash Fiction.”
“Kimberly Yelverton is a 9th grader who is a true poet! She took Creative Writing 1 and wrote journals and journals of poetry. She is a deep thinker who likes to share her work with others,” said Kimberly’s English teacher, Mrs. Lisa Ragland.
Congratulations to Kimberly for this unique achievement!

On Monday, February 23, a collection of NC Cyber Academy teachers and students faced off in “The War of Elites,” a special debate tournament hosted by the Student Government Association (SGA). It was a chance for the ultimate debate showdown between NC Cyber teachers and students, with fun, school-appropriate topics, and a chance for both staff and students to show off their critical thinking skills!
Four students and four teachers, selected from interest applications, faced off in a series of one-on-one debates, which were judged by a panel comprised of SGA students. It was a fun and informative afternoon for everyone!

NCCA Students Accepted into Prestigious Medical & Public Health Internship
NC Cyber Academy’s HOSA-Future Health Professionals Chapter is proud to announce that Asiah Lee, Chandy Pierre, and Janelle Xu have been accepted into the highly selective Leadership Initiatives Summer Internship Program. These ladies will participate in the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship during July 2026, joining motivated students from around the world in an immersive, hands-on medical training experience.
This internship connects high school students with global medical leaders in emergency medicine, surgery, medical research, and public health. Throughout the week, our students will work directly with medical professionals, visit top healthcare facilities, and collaborate with the Nagari Medical Clinic & Maternity Ward in Bauchi State, Nigeria, to design a real-world public health campaign. They will also engage in advanced simulation labs, performing procedures such as upper endoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, and phlebotomy using state‑of‑the‑art medical units.
We congratulate Asiah, Chandy, and Janelle on this outstanding achievement and look forward to the impact they will make as a future leader in health science and public health.
Corey English (11th Grade)
Corey English, an 11th grade student at North Carolina Cyber Academy, recently attended the 22nd annual Winter Agricultural Literacy Fest & Academic Fair, which celebrates National FFA (Future Farmers of America) Week, alongside his mother.
Shout Out to Corey for representing NC Cyber Academy at the Literary Fest & Academic Fair!
Isabella Reil (12th Grade)
Class of 2026 senior Isabella Reil is involved in a wide range of activities both inside and outside of NC Cyber Academy. Isabella’s hobbies include bracelet making, hiking, and swimming. She has also been involved in the Student Government Association (SGA).
During the 2024-25 school year, Isabella served as the junior class Vice President.
“I like that even though the school is virtual, there are many opportunities to meet up in person,” she said.
Isabella is a tremendously hard worker. In addition to working as a hostess at her local Outback Steakhouse, she has worked as an intern with a highly-experienced infusion nurse who holds the much-desired certification of CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Infusion), the only national accreditation for infusion nurses. Isabella is planning on becoming a nurse practitioner and running her own clinic in the future.
We wish Isabella continued success in her senior spring semester, and we look forward to seeing all of our 2026 graduates at our graduation ceremony Thursday, May 21 in Raleigh!

Teacher Shout Out - Mr. Colt Weaver
I would like to give a shoutout to Mr. Weaver, my English 2 Honors teacher. I had him last semester and being in his class was an amazing experience.
Mr. Weaver is always so supportive, funny, and kind to his students. He was the kind of teacher that was able to get the whole class engaged and actually enjoy the classwork.
Mr. Weaver was always extremely good at encouraging his students and helping them with their work and even maybe unintentionally helping them with their mental health. He was always so bright and cheery no matter what, and his class was always the highlight of my day.
---Amaya Garcia (9th Grade)
Teacher Shout Out - Mrs. Crystal Sampson
I would like to give a Shout Out to Mrs.Sampson, our ninth grade attendance and engagement coach, and one of our Learning Lab teachers. Crystal Sampson is always a big bright light in the morning. Crystal has always been a light, guide, coach, and mentor to all of us students (and also a mom loll). She has been there for us since August, and will continue to be here for us until we walk across the stage a graduation (and I'm sure she will be even after that).
---Lydia Wood (9th Grade)
Mrs. Sampson provided the following response to Lydia's Shout Out!
Lydia, thank you so much! I absolutely LOVE working here at NC Cyber because of students and families like yours and those I get to work with every day. I am blessed beyond measure to get to work here and meet students and families that I get to love just like my own. Keep up the good work!
Teacher Shout Out - Emily Macchiavello
I would like to make a teacher shoutout for Ms. Macc! She was one of the best English teachers I've ever had and helped me a lot throughout the beginning of my high school year which was pretty tough. She was fun, very creative, helpful and engaging. I miss her class a lot!

New NCCA Parent Glad About Move from NC Virtual Academy
Bridget Modlin is the parent of multiple NC Cyber Academy students, including Delila Thompson (4th Grade), Gabriella Thompson (5th Grade), Savanna Thompson (6th Grade), Isabella Thompson (8th Grade), and Natallie Bland (8th Grade). She provided the following thoughts about her family’s move from the North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) to the North Carolina Cyber Academy.
My girls who are in 8th, 6th, 5th, and 4th grade made the switch from North Carolina Virtual Academy in January. We had been with them for 9 years. I was skeptical at first, but we have been accommodated so well and have enjoyed North Carolina Cyber Academy. We are so glad we made the decision.
Mrs. (Candi) Rhinehart and Mrs. (Holly) Noel have been so helpful to us. There have been others but these two have really gone above and beyond. They have answered many questions and helped out in many ways. We have really enjoyed having less of a workload and the Friday's with no live classes. A big thank you to staff and teachers who have been so welcoming and guided us through this process. We are looking forward to many more years to come.
Thanks to Bridget Modlin for this wonderful review!

Leader in Me - Habit 3 (Put First Things First!)
At the North Carolina Academy, we are building strong leadership skills through Habit 3 - Put First Things First. This is part of our “Leader in Me” approach to high-quality learning and teaching!
Leaders understand priorities. They focus on what is most important, like completing assignments, preparing for tests, and taking care of responsibilities, before jumping into fun activities. This habit helps students manage time, stay organized, and make choices that support their success.
Family Challenge
Please talk with your student about what is on their plate each week. Help them sort tasks into “Must Do” and “Can Do Later” lists and celebrate when they stick to their priorities.
Habit 3 Put First Things First. “Work first, then play.”

Owls Honor Presidents Day
On Presidents Day, the NC Cyber Academy took time to reflect on the leadership, courage, and dedication of the individuals who have served as President of the United States throughout our nation’s history.
Presidents Day is an opportunity to learn about the challenges they faced, the decisions that shaped our country, and the enduring principles of service, responsibility, and civic engagement.
At NC Cyber Academy, we encourage our students to explore history with curiosity and critical thinking as we honor the foundations of our democracy and the values that unite us.
Wishing our NC Cyber community a meaningful and reflective Presidents Day!
NC Cyber Honors Black History Month
This month, we honored the courage, brilliance, and perseverance of Black leaders who helped shape our nation and expand opportunity for generations to come.
From the moral leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to the scientific innovation of George Washington Carver, the fearless freedom of Harriet Tubman, and the barrier-breaking legacy of Jackie Robinson, their stories remind us that progress is driven by vision, resilience, and an unwavering belief in justice.
At North Carolina Cyber Academy, we celebrate Black history not only as a reflection on the past, but as a living legacy that inspires our students to lead, innovate, and create a more equitable future.
Celebrating Children’s Dental Health Month at NC Cyber Academy!
A healthy smile helps set the foundation for lifelong confidence and wellness. This month, we encourage our students and families to make dental care a daily habit—brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and keeping up with dental checkups.
At North Carolina Cyber Academy, we believe healthy students learn better, smile brighter, and thrive both in and out of the classroom. Let’s work together to keep those smiles strong all year long!
Smile and shine, NCCA!

Celebrating Public Schools Week at North Carolina Cyber Academy
This week, we proudly join schools across the nation in celebrating Public Schools Week (February 23–27, 2026) — a time to recognize the incredible impact public education has on our students, families, and communities.
At North Carolina Cyber Academy, we are honored to provide a high-quality, tuition-free public school option that empowers students to learn, grow, and achieve in a flexible online environment. Our dedicated teachers, supportive staff, engaged families, and hardworking students are what make our school community so special.
Public education opens doors, creates opportunities, and prepares the next generation of leaders — and we are proud to be part of that mission every day.

Literacy at Home: Digital Children's Reading Initiative
In order to provide continuing support for North Carolina’s youngest readers, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Early Learning has developed and released “Literacy at Home.” This digital resource provides literacy activities at each grade level, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Families and communities may access this resource for activities that specifically target the literacy skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and oral language. When children grow in each of these foundational areas they are well on their way to becoming proficient readers.
