Dear Families,
We want to make you aware of a recent security incident involving Canvas, the district’s learning management system.
While we have no reason to believe highly sensitive data is at risk, as a general best practice, we are encouraging our community to be cautious of any unsolicited emails or messages that appear to come from Canvas, particularly if they request personal information or password resets.
According to information provided by Instructure, the company that operates Canvas, an unauthorized actor temporarily altered certain pages seen by some users while logged into the system. Canvas reports that it quickly contained the issue and, at this time, has found no evidence that user passwords were compromised or that additional data was accessed or downloaded.
Within West Bloomfield School District’s Canvas environment, the primary information stored includes student email addresses, parent email addresses, and teacher gradebook information.
Canvas remains operational, and Instructure (parent company and developer of Canvas) has indicated that it has implemented additional security measures while continuing its investigation. The district will continue to monitor updates from Canvas and will communicate any significant new information if necessary.
Thank you for your continued partnership and understanding.
Sincerely,
Scott LongAssistant Superintendent of Learning Services
