Strong Relationships with Families and Community

During conference week, Tumwater High School art teacher Jill Giudice created a memorable and meaningful experience that perfectly captured the power of family engagement in our schools. Her ceramics students were invited to bring a parent or guardian to conferences on Thursday evening—not just to talk about their progress, but to step into the studio and learn how to throw on the pottery wheel together.

It was incredible to see in action. The room was filled with laughter, encouragement, and a little bit of clay-covered trial and error. Many students—especially young men—took the lead as the teachers, guiding their parents through the process with patience and pride. Watching the role reversal unfold was something special; students became the experts, parents became the learners, and everyone shared in the joy of trying something new.

Experiences like this highlight the heart of what makes our schools strong. When staff create opportunities for families to actively participate in learning, it builds connections that go far beyond the classroom. It was a wonderful evening of relationship-building, creativity, and community—one that students and families will remember for years to come.
