Principal's Report

A Weekly Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School East

Principal'sReportA Weekly Update from Perkiomen Valley MiddleSchool East

A Word From Dr. Clune

Dear PV East Parents and Guardians,

With the start of spring we are noticing that more students are not in compliance with the dress code policy. Tops and bottoms must meet and private areas need to be covered. In addition, we are seeing a lot more gum chewing. Please review these policies with your child and thank you in advance for your support.

We will soon be breaking ground on our new garden in the front of PV East. It will provide a wonderful pathway and sitting area through a butterfly garden. The entire garden was designed by master gardeners at Penn State Extension. If you are interested in having a personalized brick, please use this link: https://4everbricks.com/donors/PVMSE/

Other gardening events include our annual Watershed Clean-up, Green Team Plant Sale, and Loss Group's Flower Sale for Mother's Day.

We are excited to announce that we are hosting an eclipse viewing party and optional after party on Monday, April 8th starting at 2:15PM. We will be reviewing important safety precautions with students beforehand about viewing the eclipse. If you child wants to stay after school for the 'After Party' or if you want to volunteer to help, please use this link. www.tinyurl.com/EastEclipse

This coming Tuesday March 26th is a half day for students as Spring Break begins on Wednesday March 27th and concludes on Monday April 1st. For all of our families who celebrate, we wish you a Happy Easter on March 31st.

Sincerely,

Seamus Clune, Ph.D.

Proposed 24-25 Schedule Insights

A middle school schedule, see below, is being proposed for the 24/25 school year. This proposed schedule would provide purposeful time (I&E) for intervention and/or enrichment (Math and/or ELA), core rotations, and character education to occur within the school day. This week we will share more information about core rotations with you. More information about character education will be shared next week.

If students do not qualify to participate in a small group intervention they will participate in a Tier 1 core rotation. During core class rotation time, core area teachers (Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies) use extended instructional time with their students to provide necessary review or enrichment lessons based on assessment data (PSSA, STAR, LinkIt Benchmark, iReady) or classroom data. These lessons will be provided by using approved curriculum resources. The collective findings from a 2015 study by the National Center on Time and Learning (NCTL) determined that when combined with other factors like supportive school culture and effective leadership, extended instructional time can improve student achievement.

More information will be shared about character education in next week's Principal’s Report. A virtual meeting will also take place for any parents/guardians interested in learning more about the proposed schedule. The virtual meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 9th at 7:00pm. Zoom link information will be shared closer to the meeting. We will record the meeting and share questions and answers posted from the meeting.

SAFE2SAY

We reviewed our Safe 2 Say program last week. Our students viewed the video below during their Advisory period.

Our students can submit an anonymous tip through the Safe2Say Program. Tips are typically related to a variety of challenges our students experience or witness, such as bullying, harassment, disrespectful language, safety concerns, etc. When a tip is received, the State (who runs Safe2Say) immediately follows up with building administrators.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Did you know that the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisit Lifeline?

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

https://988lifeline.org/current-events/the-lifeline-and-988/

The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.
