Principal's Message

Dear ASI Parents, Guardians, and Students,

Welcome to Semester 2 and Happy New Year! We hope your winter break was restful, joyful, and filled with meaningful time together. As we return to campus, we are excited to begin the second half of the school year with renewed energy, purpose, and optimism.

A new semester is a wonderful opportunity for fresh starts, goal-setting, and continued growth. Our students have already accomplished so much this year, and we look forward to building on that success as they engage in rigorous learning, strengthen positive habits, and continue developing both academically and socially. Our staff remains committed to supporting every student and partnering with families to ensure a successful and rewarding semester.

We encourage parents and guardians to stay actively connected by regularly checking Parent Connect to monitor grades and attendance. Additionally, continued conversations at home about responsible social media use and healthy phone habits are especially important at the intermediate level as students learn to navigate friendships and make positive choices.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. If you have any questions or concerns as we settle back into our routines, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are always here to help.

Wishing our ASI community a fantastic start to the new year and a strong beginning to Semester 2!

Warm regards,
Mrs. Carter
Principal, Alta Sierra Intermediate School

10 REASONS WHY KIDS NEED TO BE IN SCHOOL 10 REASONS WHY KIDS NEED TO BE IN SCHOOL

REASON #6: Graduation Celebration

According to research, poor attendance in grades K-8 is a leading indicator that a student may later drop out of high school. On the flip side, by freshman year, regular attendance patterns become a leading indicator that a student will graduate, stronger even than test scores.

HERE EVERY DAY, ON TIME CLASSROOM CHALLENGE HERE EVERY DAY, ON TIME CLASSROOM CHALLENGE

January 6th - January 30th

This January, we are launching our Here Every Day, On Time Challenge to reinforce the importance of consistent attendance and punctuality—especially during first period.

How the challenge works:

  • All first-period classes will participate in a weekly attendance challenge.
  • Each day a class has 100% attendance with no tardies, that class earns one entry into a weekly drawing.
  • The stronger the attendance throughout the week, the more entries a class earns.
  • At the end of each week, three classrooms will be selected to receive a classroom reward, such as a hot chocolate or donut party.

Consistent attendance and punctuality are key factors in student success, and this challenge is a great way to start the new semester strong.

INDEPENDENT STUDY OPTION FOR STUDENT ABSENCES INDEPENDENT STUDY OPTION FOR STUDENT ABSENCES

PLEASE READ

In previous years, families could simply call the attendance line to report an illness, and the school was able to receive ADA funding for that absence. Due to changes in state law, this is no longer the case. Current requirements now mandate that learning must occur and be documented in order for schools to recover ADA funding for student absences.

Because of this change, we ask families to take an additional step when a student is absent. In addition to calling the attendance line, families are encouraged to request Independent Study. When students complete assigned work and submit work samples for the days they were absent, Alta Sierra Intermediate School is able to recover ADA funding that can no longer be generated through a phone call alone.

Beginning in Semester 2, Alta Sierra will offer an Independent Study option to support students when they need to be absent from school while helping them stay on track academically.

Independent Study is available for absences due to illness, family needs, or travel. Requests may be made one day at a time and may cover up to 10–15 days, depending on the reason provided. Once assigned work is completed and returned, the absence is cleared and will not count toward the State of California’s 18-day absence limit.

Using Independent Study also helps ASI improve our Chronic Absenteeism rate on the California School Dashboard. Students who miss 10% or more of the school year are identified as chronically absent, which impacts both individual students and our overall school performance measures.

To ensure students remain academically on track, students who exceed 10% absences and do not complete Independent Study will be required to attend two days of after-school academic labs for each absence. These labs provide structured time and support for students to complete missing assignments and receive additional academic assistance.

We strongly encourage families to use the Independent Study option whenever a student is absent. This approach helps students stay current with their learning, prevents academic gaps, and minimizes the need for additional after-school make-up time.

To request Independent Study, please have your student stop by the Grizzly Office upon returning to school.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Rios at (559) 327-3500.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping our students succeed—both academically and beyond.

POSITIVITY PROJECT STUDENT ASSEMBLY POSITIVITY PROJECT STUDENT ASSEMBLY

Today, Mrs. Albee presented a Positivity Project assembly titled, "Lighthouses and You" to students during their PE classes. This assembly focused on building positive character traits, strengthening relationships, and encouraging students to make thoughtful, kind choices both on and off campus.

We encourage families to follow up at home by talking with your student about what they learned during the assembly and why these lessons matter. These conversations help reinforce the message and support the development of strong character and positive behaviors.

Thank you for partnering with us in helping our students grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

WINTER DRESS CODE REMINDERS WINTER DRESS CODE REMINDERS

As we move through the winter months, we appreciate your continued support in helping students arrive at school dressed appropriately and ready to learn. Please review the following dress code reminders:

  • Pajama bottoms are not permitted at school.

  • Slippers, including UGG slippers, are not allowed. UGG boots and booties are permitted.

  • Clothing with holes must be patched from behind so that no bare skin or undergarments are visible. Minor distressing is allowed.

  • Undergarments must be fully covered at all times:

    • Boys: Undergarments may not extend below shorts.

    • Girls: Tops must fully cover all undergarments.

  • Blankets are not allowed on campus.

The majority of our students follow the dress code daily, and we truly appreciate your partnership in reinforcing these expectations at home. With continued collaboration, we can minimize dress code violations and avoid the need for progressive discipline.

Together, let’s keep Alta Sierra Intermediate School a positive, respectful, and focused learning environment. Thank you for your ongoing support!
