Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
December 15, 2023
It was a great week at The Lab. We were excited to recognize Mrs. Rachael Myers as our Teacher of the Year and nominee for Baltimore County Teacher of the Year. As many in our community know, Mrs. Myers creates a wonderful, inclusive learning environment that brings the best out of every student. She is also a teacher-leader at our school, volunteering her time to serve with the Equity Guiding Coalition and School Improvement Team to move us forward. We were glad to surprise her on Wednesday and fill the halls with students and colleagues to celebrate her!
We are also preparing for our Hour of Power initiative in the new year. There is more information below and if you have interest in supporting in any of the ways outlined, you can communicate that here. We are excited to take this creative step forward to support our students and any help is much appreciated!
As we are at the halfway point of the second quarter, we sent all custodial parents an email this afternoon with their child's attendance summary to date. We try to remain cognizant of chronic absenteeism, which is absences for 10% of school days. Today is the 71st day of school this year, so anything more than 7 days is currently counted as being chronically absent. We know that the flu and some nasty bugs have been going around, but encourage all students to be at school every day that they are well.
Finally, a reminder that the Boundary Study Survey closes on Sunday. If interested, you can view the recording of Lutherville's members of the Boundary Study Committee discussing the options and process. And, the PTA has included links to some additional information below.
Reminder that Friday of next week is an Asynchronous Virtual Day for students. Teachers will provide online activities for students to engage that day and/or paper alternatives for students to complete. We also will not have a Lab Report next week, but do look forward to Spirit Week and Skate Night on Tuesday. We wish everyone a wonderful winter break surrounded by loved ones!
Calendar Reminders:
12/18 - Winter Spirit Week (through 12/21)
12/19 - Skate Night
12/22 - Asynchronous Learning Day; Virtual Activities and Office Closes at 12:30
12/23 - School Closed; Winter Break Begins

Hour of Power!
Our faculty is committed to launch an innovative plan to provide some additional personalized learning during the school day to our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders during their extra rotation time on Thursday and Friday afternoons from 2:00 - 3:00. We are calling it an "Hour of Power" and it will run from the return from Winter Break until we go out for Spring Break. We believe this opportunity will help grow all our students, and we need our community's help!
We are seeking partnership in multiple ways to make this program happen for our amazing students:
- If you're available, volunteer to come in and play a game or activity with students!
- Helping to prepare materials in the month of December (at school or from home)
- Donating funds for books for some students, or snacks
We are working with our higher education partners at Goucher, Loyola, and Towson to find future teachers excited for additional opportunities to serve students, but are also open to connections with family members, retired educators, and community members who would like to work with 3-4 students to support their learning activities. All volunteers will complete BCPS Volunteer Training and Background Checks. If you'd like to add your name to support -- please do so here!
