KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES

Thank you to all the many families who attended curriculum nights this week. The evenings are always a wonderful way to build the home and school connection that is so important for student success.

I mentioned at our two curriculum nights that Northwood will continue its focus on the importance of reading. During the school day students in kindergarten through fifth grade will access engaging texts to react, reflect, respond to both fiction and non-fiction literature and explore vocabulary in context. This year, students in upper grades will also compare multiple forms of text (multi-modal) to synthesize information and formulate responses. While we dig into the process and act of reading at school, we also work to make sure our students have an appreciation for and love of reading. This is an area that is easy to support at home. I know many families have story time at night or take trips to the library to keep a supply of books at home. The more our Explorers dive into reading, the deeper their love of reading will grow.

Final SEAT Count Update: This week enrollment and student attendance was reviewed once again, and Northwood will no longer be impacted by losing a section in one of our general education grade levels. Enrollment in our Autism (AU) Support classrooms has continued to grow, and we have been allotted additional positions to that department to help students with classroom instruction and support. This is wonderful news, and I appreciate that our data was revisited.

We have a good number of kindergarten and second grade families that still need to return documents for enrollment and residency verification. Please reach out to our data clerk, Amy Dulion (dulionaw@fultonschools.org), if you have any questions. Specific district-required verification letters will be sent out in the coming days to families that still have documents to submit.

It was great to see so many fan T-shirts and team colors today! This weekend will be the start of many fun weekends of college football with NFL games soon to follow, and the MLB season is still in full swing (pun intended).

Please enjoy the holiday weekend and find time to enjoy the outdoors and lots of good books!

With gratitude,

Heather Q. Rucker, principal

FOURTH GRADE EXPLORERS

We have had a great first few weeks of school learning our expectations and getting into our curriculum! This week we started a new science unit about water and weather. We explored where we can find water in nature and learned that water is constantly around us in the air. Students then used their artistic brains to represent just how small water droplets and rain droplets are! Check out our artwork!

FIFTH GRADE EXPLORERS

ELECTRIFYING SCIENCE: In fifth grade we've been investigating different sources of electricity and magnetism. We have been using 'simple circuit' kits to build our own circuits as well as using static electricity and magnetism to move objects. We even made our own electromagnet to lift paperclips at the push of a button. We also planned and carried out investigations on common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity. It has been a fun and quite 'shocking' time.🙂

AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK

Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.

As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!

Next week’s AVID goal is: My goal is to walk quietly in line, on the third square with my arms at my side without cutting in line.

ICE CREAM & BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Your child will be recognized at school on his/her birthday, with an announcement on Explorervision and a special birthday pencil. Please do not send cake, cupcakes, balloons, party favors, or party invitations to school as these will not be distributed. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school you may purchase ice cream from our cafeteria for your child’s class.

  • Please email your Explorer’s teacher to find out how many students are in their class.
  • Email our Cafeteria Manger Bethany Lopez at Lopezb3@fultonschools.org to place your order at least TWO FULL WEEKS IN ADVANCE of your Explorer’s birthday.
  • Ice cream is still $1 each for birthdays. The simplest way to handle the cost is to have money on your Explorers account via MySchoolBucks.

NEW CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND

This year, with the new lunch system, our school community has the capability to create a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account would be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!

Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Ms. Bethany Lopez, Cafeteria Manager and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Ms. Lopez lopezb3@fultonschools.org if you have any questions.

MySchoolBucks

Pay for school meals and fees securely online! With MySchoolBucks, parents can also view cafeteria purchases, access meal balances, register for activities, purchase event tickets, browse school items, and more.
