What's Up at Wood

π Message from Dr. Johnson
A Great Start!
We are off to a wonderful beginning of the school year! Thank you to our students, staff, and families for making the first two days such a success. The excitement and energy on campus sets the tone for a fantastic year ahead.
Attendance Matters
Every day counts! Regular attendance is essential for student success. When students miss school, they miss valuable learning time, classroom community building, and important routines. Please help your child build strong habits by being at school on time every day. Remember 4th and 5th graders begin at 8:50 AM.
Staying Safe in the Heat
As we continue to experience warm weather, please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school each day and dresses in light, comfortable clothing. We are taking extra precautions during the school day to keep everyone safe and cool.
Drop-off and Dismissal Safety
Your partnership helps keep our school community safe. Please follow all traffic laws and school procedures during drop-off and dismissal. Drive slowly, use crosswalks, and be mindful of our neighbors by NOT avoiding blocked driveways or double parking. Thank you for your patience, respect, and care in keeping everyone safe.
Valet Drop-off and Saying Goodbyes at the Gate Begins Monday
Starting Monday, valet drop-off will be available on 235th Street from 8:30-9:00. This is a convenient and safe way to help students arrive at school. We also ask families to begin saying goodbyes at the gates so students can safely and confidently transition onto campus. Our staff will be there to welcome and support them.
Together, we can ensure a strong, safe, and positive start to the school year!
π Traffic Safety Reminder Around Our School
Please help keep our Woodchucks safe! When driving near school, slow down, watch for pedestrians, and obey all posted speed limits and crosswalk rules. Avoid double parking, stopping in red zones, or blocking our neighborsβ driveways. Always use designated drop-off and pick-up areas. Valet drop off will start on Monday, 8/25/25.

π€ Reporting Absences
Weβve made it easier to report absences and have the following options available:
Email: woodattendance@tusd.org
Online form: Wood Elementary Absence Notification
Call: 310-533-4484
~ If your child's absence is not reported, it will be marked as unexcused.
~ If your child will be absent three or more days, please notify the teacher and the Attendance Office (310-533-4484) so that classwork can be prepared by the teacher for your child before the absences begin.
~ If you need to pick up your child early for an appointment, please notify your child's teacher via email and cc woodattendance@tusd.org.
For more information, go to https://www.tusd.org/schools/wood/families/attendance.
πStudy Contract
If your child will be absent for three or more days, your child is eligible for an Independent Study Contract, which keeps your student up to date on class work.
Please advise your child's teacher in advance as soon as possible when you know your child will be absent for three or more days. You may email, call, or send a message to the teacher and the attendance office (woodattendance@tusd.org) so they have time to put together a lesson plan for your student. It is your responsibility to report the absence, obtain the study contract and any materials online or in person before the absence. Upon your studentβs return to school, be sure the completed assignments are provided to the teacher in order for your student to receive credit. If you have any questions about the assignments, be sure to contact the teacher.
π₯ͺ Meal Applications Due
We are pleased to announce that ALL of our schools are offering FREE daily breakfast and lunch during this upcoming 2025-2026 school year through the California Universal Meals Program.
Although meals are free of charge, all families are still highly recommended to fill out and submit the documentation that our district needs to continue to provide this benefit.
Please use the link to fill out one form for your family --> Universal Benefits Form.
Visit the Nutrition Services website for more information.

6:30 - Welcome, Introductions and PTA Assoc Meeting in cafe

We have a hard-working staff that will work with you and your child to ensure a successful school year.
