KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
As we move into the first week of February, there is a lot happening at Kodiak Middle School and plenty to be excited about. This week brings the start of our 8th grade ice skating unit in PE, student government meetings and elections for vacant positions during Flex, and continued opportunities for academic support through math tutoring. We also look forward to the KIBSD District Spelling Bee on Tuesday evening and wish the very best to Charity, our KMS winner, and Emma, our KMS Runner-Up.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many parents, staff, and volunteers who helped make Friday Night Live such a tremendous success. Events like this are only possible because of the time, energy, and care our community shows up with for our students. The laughter, connection, and sense of belonging created that evening truly made a difference for our kids.
Please be sure to review the weekly planner and the “Coming Soon” section for important upcoming dates, including district inservice days, drama club auditions, conferences, and spring break. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership. We are grateful to be part of such a strong and engaged school community.

NEW: SCIENCE CLUB WITH MS. LUCERO
The Science Club is open to all middle school students, regardless of prior experience. Its goal is to create an inclusive and engaging environment where students can learn by doing, build confidence in scientific thinking, and develop a lifelong curiosity about science.
Students will engage in hands-on experiments, explore real-world scientific phenomena, and ask meaningful questions about how the world works. Activities are designed to encourage inquiry-based learning, collaboration, and problem-solving while exposing students to a wide range of scientific concepts.
For questions, see Ms. Lucero, Room 101
SPECIAL THANKS
FNL was a huge success! Parents and staff working together form powerful partnerships that benefit our kids!
Thank you, Alexis Jackson (your math riddle was wildly popular!), Stefanie Kondro(our Karaoke master), Jordan Fogle (the floater that is all places at all times), Serjoe Gutierrez (all things music), Ms. Cindy Monte (all things fun and dance), and Ms.Grizz (always positive).
Thank you Rena Rankin and Judith Bruns for your long days and high tolerance for tween energy!
Special shout out to our PTSA Secretary, Katrina Filipowicz, who managed the bouncy steers and horses ALL evening. Seriously, folks, the energy was high level and this gal wrangled it like a Rodeo Queen!
A very special shout out to student, and rodeo star, Elsie Riutta for her roping tutorials with the dummy steer!
Thank you, Christi Vitt, Erika Lozano Gutierrez, Betsy Lund, Krystal Kenshalo, Susan Patrick, Sparrow Trott, Amanda Cox - LeDoux, Elycia Steenbergen, Richele Ferris, and Ashley Cubbedge for managing the fun! Without all this parent power, FNL would not happen.
MS. Z'S STEM FLEX: NOTE CARD TOWER CHALLENGE
We built notecard towers in STEM. Students were given 15 note cards, 48 inches of tape and a paper clip.
The tallest tower built was 120cm by Ryan Filipowicz, Miggy Sevilla, and Genki Seto.
KMS STUDENT GOVERNMENT SUPERINTENDENT LUNCHEON
The KMS Student Government met the finalists for KIBSD Superintendent for lunch on Thursday, January 22. They joined the KHS Student Government and prepared questions representing their classmates.
