The Cannon Connection
2024-2025 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
February 23 - March 1, 2025
WOW - What a Week! Our halls were a BUZZ this week, from district professional development and engaging engineering week interactive learning experiences to announcing our TOY and POY and, finally, our Family Engineering Night! Our four STEM Pillars (Curriculum, Culture, Community, and College, Career, Military Connections) were clearly on DISPLAY!
Please help me give a HUGE Congratulations to our Teacher and Para of the Year - Ms. Paige Summers & Mrs. Pilar Contreras! Our staff nominated worthy peers and voted to celebrate those who are making a BIG impact on our Cannon Community. We are Cannon Proud to have Ms. Summers and Mrs. Contreras at Cannon dedicated to our students, staff, and families. Congratulations Paige and Pilar!
This week, we celebrated National Engineering Week Cannon Style! Engineering stands at the cutting edge of innovation, playing a crucial role in crafting the solutions that will define tomorrow. From the rise of artificial intelligence and clean energy to advancements in semiconductors and biotechnology, engineers have consistently driven progress, enhancing our lives to be more efficient, comfortable, and interconnected.
At Cannon, we connect curriculum to the real-world through the Engineering Design Process and explore ways to make critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, systems thinking, and empathy part of our classroom and campus culture. Our scholars will comprise the future engineering teams designing solutions to tackle global challenges, propel technological progress, and contribute positively to the future of society.
Thank you for joining us Friday night to experience the amazing STEM teaching and learning opportunities our teachers design for our scholars; what a STEMtastic night! It was also wonderful to see all of our former Cannon Cubs and middle school siblings join in on the engineering fun!
Congratulations to our Kindergarten and first grade STEM Habit of Mind Hall of Fame Inductees for Listening with Empathy! STEM teaching and learning is an instructional approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM education practices, students develop key skills including: problem solving, creativity, and critical analysis. We are PROUD to honor our scholars for exhibiting STEM thinking, and we can't wait to celebrate our next group of inductees this Friday.
I'd like to give a STEMtastic Staff Spotlight Shout Out to our AMAZING Nurse Kendra! Our clinic is always a buzz, but the past several weeks it's been a VERY BUSY time for Nurse Kendra. She goes ABOVE and BEYOND to care for our Cannon Community with a huge HEART, passion for kids, and calm to keep all at ease, safe, and healthy.
Thank you, Nurse Kendra, for all you do for our Cannon community!
This week, some of our Cannon PTA executive board members joined me at our annual Council of PTAs Founder's Day brunch. The event was filled with celebrations and awards dedicated to academic excellence. Two of our phenomenal teachers were awarded Schroeder Grants - Mrs. Jessica Morris and Mrs. Stefani Donaldson! Thank you, Jessica and Stefani, for your passion and dedication to our Cubbies!
I'd also like to give a HUGE shout out to some STEMtastic scholars who competed in Odyssey of the Mind competition this weekend - Betty and Ophelia Sullivan, Emilia and Savannah Moreland, Allie Grow, Ingrid Johnson , Ella John Huston! Led by Mrs. Moreland and supported by Mrs. Melanie Gable, these outstanding students used their creativity and innovative spirit to showcase their imaginative talents. These very clever and talented young ladies scored 2nd place at Odyssey of the Mind Regionals Saturday and will be advancing to the state competition in Houston next month!! Congratulations, girls! We are CANNON PROUD of you!
As always, thank you for your parent partnership!
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett
