MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Mitchell Families,
Mitchell High School experienced an eventful week filled with celebration, achievement, and student engagement. The annual Bonfire Night, rescheduled from Homecoming Week due to weather, brought our community together on October 6 for an evening of camaraderie. On October 8, AFJROTC and Aviation Science students participated in Falcon Aerolab’s flight experience, gaining hands-on learning opportunities in aviation. Later that evening, the Fall Choir Concert showcased the remarkable talent and dedication of our choir students. In addition, Mitchell’s College App Day received high praise, being named the best in the district by eight college representatives for its strategic and inclusive planning. Mitchell High School has also been recognized for our work-based learning achievements, as evidenced by the 2nd highest number of job and internship placements in the district and the highest percentage of student placements in jobs and internships.
Monday, October 13, marks the start of Quarter 2, presenting a fresh opportunity for students to set new academic goals, build on their progress, and engage more deeply in their learning. Families are encouraged to check in with their students about schedules and quarter 1 behavior, attendance, and grades (BAG Data). On Tuesday, October 14, families are invited to FAFSA/CAFSA Night for hands-on support with financial aid applications, an essential step for seniors planning for college, trade school, or other postsecondary pathways. Early completion can help unlock more financial aid opportunities.
Looking ahead, October 20–24 marks Fall Break, providing students with a well-deserved opportunity to rest, recharge, and reconnect with their families before classes resume on Monday, October 27. However, on Monday, October 20, Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place, providing a vital opportunity for families and teachers to connect, discuss student progress, and collaborate for student success. We will also be offering Marauders Parent Academy learning sessions on this day. See details below. The following day, Tuesday, October 21, is a District Professional Development Day, as staff engage in professional learning to strengthen instruction and school culture.
As we conclude this week’s update, we are reminded of our shared commitment to student growth and achievement. At Mitchell High School, WINS—We Increase Numbers by believing in our students—guides our every effort. Together, we’ll continue to celebrate successes, overcome challenges, and support every student’s journey to excellence.

Resetting Expectations: Personal Technology Devices at MHS
As we move deeper into the school year, Mitchell High School is recommitting to a focused, distraction-free learning environment. Beginning next week, we will be resetting expectations for student use of Personal Technology Devices (PTDs) during the instructional day.
To support this effort, all PTDs must be secured in Yondr pouches from the first bell to the last. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, and any other non-instructional electronic devices.
Why the Reset? We’ve seen the impact that unrestricted device use can have on student engagement, academic performance, and social interaction. By reinforcing our Yondr policy, we aim to:
- Maximize instructional time
- Minimize distractions
- Promote face-to-face communication
- Support mental wellness
What to Expect:
- Students will be reminded daily to secure their devices in Yondr pouches.
- Staff will conduct periodic checks to ensure compliance. The 1st one will be on Monday October 13th in the Auditorium by graduating class.
- Devices found outside of pouches during instructional time will be collected and returned at the end of the day, with progressive consequences for repeated violations.
Support & Accountability We ask for the support of our families in reinforcing this expectation at home. Please remind your student of the importance of staying present and focused during the school day.
Together, we can create a learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive—free from digital distractions.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact the MHS Discipline office 719-328-6685.
FROM ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES
⚽ Student Spotlight: Jose Canales Portillo – Boys Soccer
When Jose Canales Portillo scores, good things happen for the Marauders. The Mitchell junior led the team to a 7–1 victory over Elizabeth on Oct. 1, netting four goals and an assist for an incredible nine-point performance. It marked the fourth time this season Jose has scored, and the Marauders remain undefeated (3-0-1) in those matches. Way to lead the charge, Jose—Marauder Pride!
🥎 Mitchell Softball Shows Major Growth in 2025 Season!
The Marauder softball team wrapped up the year with a 3–14 record, a strong step forward from last season’s 0–19 finish. The team’s offensive power nearly doubled their run production, scoring 122 runs this season. Their progress on the field and their positive energy reflect the hard work, perseverance, and growth of the players and coaching staff. The future is bright for Marauder Softball!

🎉 Shout-Out to the Class of ’75!

Free College App Day
On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Free College Application Days were held in the Mitchell High School Library from 8am-11am. Nine colleges and universities were at Mitchell to answer questions and help students with their applications. Some students also attended a session in the Future Center to learn about NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) eligibility requirements. Special thanks to all of the Counseling Staff and Mr. Spaw in the Library for their help with this event and for helping students with this process. Students can still continue to receive help with the college process and applying to colleges by visiting with Mrs. Montez or Mr. Cooks in the Future Center.
