Advanced Math Placement Process

Over the last year, the Aurora Quest Math teachers have been working on creating an equitable and transparent process for placing students into math courses. The Aurora Quest Advanced Math Placement process is outlined in this document. Our process includes information about the criteria and benchmarks that students need to demonstrate in order to be considered for advanced math classes.

Our goal is to develop confident mathematicians who have a strong foundation of the conceptual understanding of mathematical content and the requisite knowledge and skills. We consistently analyze student data to make adjustments to math class placement as needed.

School Dismissal

We are not going to be using the Talking Points Attendance app and using School Dismissal instead. It's a fast and easy way for us to see immediately who will be absent. Talking Points tends to get lost in our massive list of emails and we won't see the attendance message until after messages automaticall go out.

This simple phone app for Android and iPhone allow parents to specify dismissal instructions in seconds. You can make changes until the time limit we set. All changes are automatically sent in email reports to teachers at the end of the day. Email and app notifications go out to parents when changes are made. App users get a notification each morning with changes for that day. Click on the picture for a video on how to use it. Go to https://schooldismissal.com to set up your account. Reach out or come by if you need help.

Run 4 Funds

It's back!!!! Our biggest fundraiser of the year will be here before we know it so we need to start talking about it now. We have two sign ups to help with the actual run as well as help with the pencil charm shop (day of run). The charm shop is something different that we opted for this year to create a new experience for those that have done the run in the past and for them to create a prize that is unique to the student. Here’s the sign up for the shop as well as the sign up for Run day, but you better hurry cause slots are filling up fast!

Feed The Middle School Teachers

We are entering parent/teacher conference season! Crazy to believe but it kicks off with middle school on September 25th and we have a tradition of providing dinner for the teachers as they are there ALL day.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0444A9AE28A5FC1-57956043-feed

We have heard many parents over the last year and are adding a donation option for the many parents that have shown a desire but work makes it impossible within the time needed. We have already collected some money from a couple of parents so we are excited to see the option being used. You can make a donation on our website on the school page and tag it as Feed the teachers donation. We have two more opportunities coming up for elementary so what isn’t used this round will roll over.

We look forward to seeing you at our kick off meeting for the year on September 9th!

Thank You for all you do to help and grow our community!

Notes from the nurse picture
zoom_out_map

Coming to the clinic can be intriguing, interesting, important, and always an opportunity for education. I work with children on reasons to come to the clinic and how to self-manage. The Para’s have ice and bandages on the playground for minor injuries and teachers all have a bandaide available.

If you are medicating your child for any reason before school, please send me a quick email or Talking Points or call so I can provide appropriate care. As a reminder, children must stay home for 24 hours for fever, diarrhea, or vomiting that require medication. The 24-hour period is medication free.

The Big Bs requiring clinic care:

Bleeding:

This is BIG bleeding. Children do not need to come to the clinic for paper cuts, old, picked scabs, minor scrapes, or abrasions from recess. These injuries need to have the area washed and MIGHT need a band-aid

(available in classrooms and with staff on the playground).

Nosebleeds

BIG bleeds need to come to the nurse. A smear on a tissue can stay in the classroom. I see children frequently with “bloody buggers” from nose picking.

Breathing Bad:

This child should come to the clinic, or the nurse will come to the child. This child may have trouble breathing, color may change, or responsiveness may decrease.

Broken:

A child with a broken bone should come to the clinic or the nurse will go to the child. A broken bone means the child will go home and to a personal provider. The nurse might wrap a minor twisted or rolled ankle, buddy wrap fingers, or wrap a wrist and hand in the clinic. If the injury is beyond minor, the child will go home.

Barfing:

The child should come to the clinic. This is REAL vomiting/puking/barfing NOT burping up food or coughing up a plug of mucous. REAL vomiting/puking/barfing means the child goes home. The child should stay home for a minimum of 24-hours after last vomiting. The child may

return to school after 24 hours without vomiting or medication for vomiting.

Burning Up:

The child should come to the clinic if the child looks or feels feverish. A fever is 100.4 or higher. If the child has been at recess or PE, I let the child cool, provide hydration, and remove a layer of clothes if possible. The temperature will increase with dehydration so please hydrate!

Bee Sting:

The child who has a bee sting should come to the clinic. People have life-threatening allergic responses to bee stings. In addition, they hurt.

Big Bump:

Come to the clinic for blows to the head. Sometimes (more often in the P Pod) children collide with a friend’s head. This is usually not a Big Bump. Falling from playground equipment, any fall where the child lands on their head, or any fall when the adult wants the nurse to evaluate the child, the child will come to the clinic with an adult escort, or the nurse will come to the child.

A headache is often relieved with hydration and a snack. Sometimes a short rest is helpful for a headache. If the headache is still there after a big drink of water, and a bit of time, I evaluate for pain management. Starting at about 0900 every day I see children who complain of headaches because they did not eat breakfast or had highly processed sweet foods and have not had much to drink.

For big and little bumps to the head try W. O. W. Water, Oxygen (just breath), Wait. A head injury may require the parent or guardian to come to school and take the child home or to a provider.

Bowels:

A child who has had more than two episodes of diarrhea should come to the clinic. Sometimes people think a “loose” bowel movement indicates illness when it may be the result of drinking morning coffee, too many simple carbs, sometimes even from eating soup. A person with a stomachache may need a bathroom break, a snack (if the person has not eaten), or hydration. Two episodes of diarrhea require a parent to take the child home. Other important reasons to see the nurse: The teacher or staff member will use the radio, and the nurse will come to the child. Examples of emergencies include allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), a seizure, fainting, and diabetes changes.

Anxiety/depression/panic attacks:

Student should come to the clinic. The nurse can call other members of the team as needed.

As your school nurse, I want to know and connect with each child and their parent/guardians. If you have questions about your child, please call, email, or send me a Talking Points message anytime.

Healthy Kids Colorado Survey Coming Sept. 15 - Oct. 9

Aurora Public Schools 6-12th Grade Parents and Guardians:

It is important to understand what is truly going on with the young people in our lives, especially around topics that may be uncomfortable for them to talk about. That’s why APS is proud to join districts across the state in administering a voluntary and anonymous survey to all middle and high school students in an effort to gauge their physical, social and emotional well being.

The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS) will help build, enhance and expand programs and practices that improve the health of our youth, not only across our district, but throughout the state. This informative video explains how the HKCS will provide the insight we need to properly address the needs of our youth and support them in powering their potential.

Please note that the survey will touch on multiple health topics including weight, nutrition, physical activity, suicide, violence, bullying, mental health, school safety, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, drugs, and sexual health. It will also ask questions around youth engagement in their schools and communities. Students are free to skip any questions they don’t fully understand or feel comfortable answering.

You may view the middle school survey, as well as the high school survey. If you wish to opt your child out of participating in the survey, please fill out this Opt-Out Form no later than Friday, Sept. 12. Families may also visit their child’s school to request and complete a printed version of the opt-out form.

The HKCS is supported by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Colorado Department of Human Services, the Colorado Department of Public Safety, the Colorado Department of Education, and an advisory group of state and local partners. It will be administered online during the school day and will be open to schools Sept. 15 to Oct. 9, 2025.

The data collected will be available to the community in summer of 2026. With this information, state leaders will be able to identify the top challenges that students are facing. This will aid district staff including our Mental Health and Counseling team in providing students with proper prevention and support resources.

To learn more about the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, review the FAQ, visit HealthyKidsColo.org, or contact Healthy Kids Colorado Survey Director Dr. Ashley Brooks-Russell at 303-724-8437.

Thank you for your continued support.
