Tuesday, July 14

Title: Alabama Art Education Association Mini Conference

Description:

Overview - The North Alabama Art Educators Association (AAEA) will have a one-day, hands-on Mini Professional Development (PD) session. This event is designed to provide art educators with practical, classroom-ready strategies that foster creativity, engagement, and skill development across multiple grade levels. All sessions will be conducted face-to-face and emphasize active participation, accessible materials, and adaptable techniques suitable for diverse learning environments.

Session 1: Get Your Students to Draw Big! (Instructor - Pat Snow)

This engaging session focuses on helping students overcome hesitation in drawing by encouraging large-scale gesture work and reducing attachment to “precious” drawings. Participants will explore a series of gesture drawing exercises designed to build confidence and promote expressive mark-making.

A featured group activity will demonstrate how to incorporate a fun, collaborative face-drawing exercise that removes fear and builds classroom community. Strategies shared in this session can be adapted for a wide range of grade levels, including secondary and collegiate classrooms.

Session 2: Palette Knife Painting for the Classroom (Instructor - Ahmad Austin)

This hands-on workshop introduces educators to palette knife painting as a dynamic and engaging classroom technique. Participants will create a small floral painting while learning how to build texture, mix color effectively, and approach painting with an intuitive mindset.

In addition to completing a finished artwork, attendees will gain a clear, structured process that can be easily implemented in their own classrooms. The session emphasizes simplifying complex painting concepts, encouraging creative freedom, and increasing student engagement through tactile and expressive methods.

Session 3: Beaded Bracelet Design – Color & Composition (Instructor - Beth Bachuss)

This interactive session uses beaded bracelet design as a means to teach foundational concepts in 2D design and color theory. Participants will explore color schemes, pattern development, and compositional balance while creating wearable art.

The lesson is highly adaptable and can be modified for a variety of grade levels. Educators will leave with practical strategies for engaging students through hands-on design projects that reinforce artistic concepts in a meaningful and accessible way.

Session 4: Mini Quilted Portraits (instructor - Kerrie Pirkle)

Inspired by the work of contemporary textile artist Bisa Butler, this session introduces a simplified quilted portrait lesson designed for classroom implementation. Participants will create a 5x7 portrait using fabric, pre-printed facial images, and fabric glue.

This mini-lesson provides a manageable approach to teaching portraiture, value, and color through textile art without the need for sewing. Educators will gain a step-by-step process that supports student success while maintaining artistic rigor and creativity.

Session 5: Color Theory Class and Color Optical Illusions (Instructor - Kerek Cracco)

Derek Cracco is the associate Professor of Printmaking at UAB, Cracco has participated in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally including Digital Printmaking Now at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in NY, "Risky Business", P.P.O.W. Gallery, New York, NY, "Wrong Time, Wrong Place", T.E.N.T. Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, NL and Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie, NY which was juried by Claire Bell, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Guggenheim Museum, NY.

Cracco has been recognized for his innovative combination of traditional printmaking processes and computer graphics. His work has been purchased by several museums and by many private collections throughout the country and abroad.

Title: Understanding the Problem-Solving Team (PST) Process within AL-MTSS (Virtual)

Description: This interactive virtual session provides teachers with a clear understanding of the Problem-Solving Team (PST) process as outlined in Alabama’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (AL-MTSS) framework. Participants will explore the purpose of PST within the three AL-MTSS pillars—academics, behavior, and foundational wellness—and examine how data-driven problem solving supports student success before considering special education referral.

Grounded in Alabama Administrative Code and ALSDE guidance, this session clarifies the teacher’s role in documenting interventions, analyzing student response to instruction, and collaborating effectively during PST meetings. Participants will review required components of high-quality intervention planning, progress monitoring expectations, and the connection between Tier I instruction, targeted supports, and individualized interventions.

Through practical examples and guided reflection, teachers will strengthen their understanding of how to bring meaningful data to the table, design aligned intervention plans, and ensure fidelity of implementation. Attendees will leave with clear next steps, documentation tips, and increased confidence in supporting students through the PST process.

Title: Strengthening Tiered Instruction Within the AL-MTSS Framework (Virtual)

Description: This interactive virtual session is designed to deepen teachers’ understanding of tiered instruction within Alabama’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (AL-MTSS). Grounded in state guidance, participants will explore how strong Tier I core instruction serves as the foundation for student success, while Tier II and Tier III supports provide increasingly targeted and responsive intervention based on student need.

Teachers will examine the essential components of high-quality Tier I instruction, including clear learning targets, aligned tasks, intentional scaffolding, differentiation, and ongoing formative assessment. The session will also clarify how instructional decisions are guided by student data across the three AL-MTSS pillars: academics, behavior, and foundational wellness.

Participants will engage in reflection and practical application activities focused on planning lessons with multiple entry points, documenting interventions appropriately, and ensuring fidelity of implementation. Emphasis will be placed on proactive instructional design, progress monitoring, and collaborative problem-solving within PLCs and Problem-Solving Teams.

By the end of this session, teachers will leave with actionable strategies, planning tools, and increased confidence in delivering rigorous, responsive instruction that ensures access and opportunity for every learner.

Igniting Curiosity : Brain Based Engagement Strategies for the Classroom Igniting Curiosity : Brain Based Engagement Strategies for the Classroom

Title: Igniting Curiosity : Brain Based Engagement Strategies for the Classroom (Virtual)

Description: This dynamic virtual session explores how brain research can transform classroom engagement and strengthen student curiosity. Grounded in current cognitive science and aligned to Alabama’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (AL-MTSS) framework, participants will examine how attention, motivation, memory, and emotion influence learning—and how intentional instructional design can activate each of these systems.

Teachers will explore practical, research-informed strategies that spark curiosity, increase cognitive engagement, and create meaningful access points for all learners within Tier I instruction. The session highlights how novelty, relevance, productive struggle, student voice, and structured collaboration increase dopamine release and deepen retention. Participants will also examine how engagement practices support not only academic growth but also behavioral and foundational wellness outcomes.

Through interactive reflection and classroom-ready examples, teachers will learn how to design lessons that reduce cognitive overload, promote active thinking, and cultivate inquiry-driven learning environments. Emphasis will be placed on strategies that are proactive, inclusive, and responsive to diverse learner needs.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with brain-aligned engagement tools, practical planning ideas, and increased confidence in fostering curiosity as a driver of achievement and long-term student success.
