Temple Athletics Newsletter
From The Nest
Edition 42: April 17, 2024
I want to start off by congratulating Temple University student Ray Epstein on being named a recipient of a Truman Scholarship for outstanding leadership potential in public service.
The newly elected student government president for the 2024-25 academic year, Ms. Epstein is just the sixth Truman Scholar in Temple history. Well known on campus for her activism on preventing sexual assault and supporting its victims, she will receive a $30,000 award toward a public service-related graduate degree, an amount that can be matched by her chosen higher education institution as she pursues a law degree.
SUPPORT THE TUFF FUND MATCHING GIFT CAMPAIGN
Many of you should have received an email from the TUFF FUND and its matching gift campaign. The TUFF FUND is doing a great job of supporting our student-athletes in this new NIL era. I would like to encourage all Temple alumni and friends to support the TUFF FUND as the organization is truly helping our student-athletes and programs compete in this new college athletics landscape. I want to give a shoutout to Andy Carl for his leadership.
TEMPLE TO RESURFACE ATHLETICS TURFS
I am happy to announce that our on-campus facilities will be getting a “turf lift” over the next few months as new FieldTurf is being installed on the fields at Edberg Olson Hall and the Temple Sports Complex. This will ensure that our surfaces will maintain high level standards for our student-athletes. Thanks to Executive Senior Associate AD for Facilities and Event Management Lee Roberts and his staff on their hard work on making this happen.
NEW YORK ANGELS OF DIAMONDS DINNER
On April 15, Doug Maine hosted his annual New York Angels of Diamonds Dinner at the New York City Hunt & Fish Club. Ten Owl supporters attended the dinner, a yearly event which has raised over 1 million dollars to support Temple Athletics and our student-athletes. I want to thank Doug and all his Angels of Diamonds for their continuous support as their generosity continues to make an impact on the student-athlete experience.
RESNICK CENTER ACADEMIC SHOWCASE
On April 5, Temple University's Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes held its inaugural Student-Athlete Academic Showcase. The all-day event featured three panel sessions which included 13 student-athletes from seven varsity programs as well as a poster presentation. Special thanks to Dr. Scott Graston, Chair of the Communication and Social Influence department in the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication, who worked with Tara Evans, the Director of the Nancy and Donald Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes, to launch this Showcase.
DR. RAY MOYER TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS HONOR
Dr. Ray Moyer, who served as the Temple Athletics Head Team Physician from 1978-2013, has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 PATS Dr. Cordas Honorary Team Physician Award. A Temple Athletics Hall of Famer, Dr. Moyer touched so many student-athlete lives in his 35 years of dedicated service to our University and department.
BEST PHILADELPHIA SPORTS MASCOT – HOOTER, OF COURSE
Congrats to Hooter the Owl on winning The Inquirer’s first-ever Mascot Bracket. Hooter defeated the Saint Joseph’s Hawk for the top honor for amateur sports mascots. Thanks to all of the Temple alumni and fans for helping Hooter win this honor!!
CHERRY AND WHITE SPRING GAME A HUGE SUCCESS
Temple Football held its annual Spring Game at Edberg-Olson Field on April 13. The event saw numerous festivities before and after the game, including honorary captains in basketball coaches Adam Fisher and Diane Richardson, pre-game tailgating and street vendors. It was great to see so many Temple fans come to the game and enjoy the day and the exciting game. On the field, the White team (defense) defeated the Cherry team (offense), 56-41, in a non-traditional scoring event with points awarded for big plays, takeaways, sacks, and other criteria.
