Weekly Community Updates - September 12
Dear Students and Families,
Tonight is our first dance of the school year. We are looking forward to having students enjoy their dance this evening.
Back to School Night is next week! Back to School Night is Thursday September 18. Starting at 5:45pm, we will have tables in the courtyard where you can grab pizza, visit OSPTO or check out a few clubs that Oceana has to offer. Grade level presentations start at the following times:
- 6:00 pm - Freshman Orientation Project (information coming from 9/10 house)
- 6:15 pm - Senior Presentation (Theater)
- 6:35 pm - Junior Presentation (Library)
- 6:35 pm - Sophomore Presentation (Staff Lounge)
- 6:30 pm - Lifeskills Program Presentation (Room 107)
As a reminder after the presentations, families can follow their students' schedules to meet their students' teachers. Please be sure to screenshot your student's schedule through ParentVUE as we will not be printing out schedules. See you all next week!
Take care,
Maritza Torres
Parent Square
Our district and Oceana will be moving to ParentSquare as the platform for all communications. This change will happen next week.
Here’s what you need to know:
Parents can download the ParentSquare app to receive text alerts and easily manage their notifications.
Students can download the StudentSquare app to receive text alerts
Even if you don’t download the app, all messages will still arrive by email so you’ll stay connected.
Our weekly newsletter will continue—but instead of coming through as a stand alone email, it will now be embedded directly within ParentSquare for easier access and retrieval of past updates.
With everything moving into ParentSquare, families will now find all school information and updates within one easy-to-use platform. ParentSquare also offers individuals the option to select their language preference directly within the app which helps ensure everyone can stay connected with our school and district.
Tardy Procedures for Extracurricular Activities
Students who are frequently late may lose school privileges such as attending dances as according to policy in our student planner under Extracurricular Activities. Each Friday, if a student reaches three to five tardies, parents and students will receive a warning email letting them know the student is at risk of being placed on the No Privilege List. Once a student reaches six or more tardies, they are placed on the No Privilege List. To regain privileges, the student must attend a Restorative Attendance Workshop and complete a short reflection and planning activity to improve attendance. After attending the workshop, students are removed from the No Privilege List. If a student reaches six tardies again, they will be placed on the No Privilege List again and be required to attend another workshop. Each week, the school updates tardy records and notifies families of changes. Before major events such as dances, students and parents will receive one of three emails: confirmation that privileges have been restored, notification that the student has been newly added to the No Privilege List with a final chance to attend a workshop, or notice that the student remains on the list with one last opportunity to restore privileges. At the beginning of each marking period, all students start at zero tardies. Staying on time to class is the easiest way to remain in good standing and continue enjoying all school activities.
Oceana also understands that there are extenuating circumstances that need to be considered, if this applies to you or your student, please reach out to Vice Principal Jose Campos at jcampos@jeffersonunion.net.
To summarize the process: To stay in good standing, here’s how tardies are handled:
3–5 Tardies:
Parents and students receive an email warning that the student is close to losing privileges.
6 or More Tardies:
Student is placed on the No Privilege List.
To restore privileges, the student must attend a Restorative Attendance Workshop (Wednesdays after school)
Workshops & Privilege Restoration:
Attendance is tracked each week.
After attending a workshop, students are removed from the No Privilege List.
If tardies reach 6 again, another workshop is required.
A week prior to dances, one of three emails will be sent:
Restored Privileges – Congratulations, you are in good standing!
Newly Added – You’re now on the No Privilege List; final chance to attend a workshop.
Still on the List – Last chance to restore privileges by attending a workshop.

Casual Dance - Tonight, Friday September 12th
Oceana's first dance is coming up! Students, before you head to the dance, be sure you're familiar with the rules to ensure a fun and safe night.
Students will not be admitted 30 minutes after the dance begins, so don’t be fashionably late past 7:00 pm. If you need to leave, you may do so 1.5 hours after the start without a parent call. Backpacks and large bags are not permitted, small bags (5.5" by 8") are allowed for students whose attire do not include pockets. All students will be searched before entering, and students may be rechecked at any time. Only unopened disposable water bottles are allowed, and outside opened drinks are not permitted. If you bring a guest from another school, you are responsible for their behavior.
Students must comply with all supervising personnel immediately when given a directive. The school dress code will still be enforced, so plan your outfit accordingly. Prohibited items include weapons such as pocket knives or pepper spray, as well as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and even over-the-counter pain relievers. Any student who fails to follow these rules may be removed from the dance, and their family will be called to pick them up. Follow the guidelines, be respectful, and enjoy the night!
For the full rules and protocols, please review this document.
