National Hispanic Heritage Month

The theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month in 2025 is "Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future". This theme, chosen by the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM), celebrates the rich history and achievements of Hispanic and Latine communities while emphasizing their role in shaping the future

What the theme means:

  • Collective Heritage:

This highlights the shared cultural traditions, stories, and experiences that unite Hispanic and Latine communities.

  • Honoring the Past:

It recognizes and learns from the historical journeys, lasting achievements, and vital contributions of past generations.

  • Inspiring the Future:

The theme also focuses on the present and future, celebrating the unique voices and experiences of those who continue to pioneer change and guide the path forward for upcoming generations.

    Notable Hispanic Figures

Dr. Ellen Ochoa

Ochoa flew aboard the space shuttle Discovery and became the first Latina to go to space in 1993. Her inspirational journey includes a 30-year career with NASA and serving as Johnson Space Center’s first Hispanic director.

Sonia Sotomayor
Born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Justice Sotomayor broke boundaries in 2009 when she became the first Latina and third woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.

Luis Álvarez
An experimental physicist, Luis Álvarez joined the Manhattan Project in 1943, which is known for producing the first atomic bombs. The transformational scientist went on to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968. Álvarez is also credited in collaboration with his son, Walter Álvarez, for creating the hypothesis that dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago because of an asteroid.

Student Video Contest!

My name is Franki Moscato (girl, 23, Oshkosh). I am “that Wisconsin girl” who won a Gold Ticket on ABC’s American Idol. Perhaps you’ve seen me sing the Anthem for the Packers (5), Bucks (7), NASCAR (1), or Whitehouse (2). I am writing to ask you for help communicating a project I am working on to fight teen suicide.

My story includes being bullied out of two schools and finding myself in a dark place. Today, I use my platform and my non-profit, Franki Moscato Foundation, to advocate for teen suicide prevention.

I am inviting Wisconsin students in grades 6-12 to make a 60-second video about being kind, anti-bullying, or somehow preventing teen suicide. See my contest here: http://BeKindContest.com

Video submissions are due by November 1st. We have to hurry! The winning video will be professionally produced and broadcast as a televised Public Service Announcement across Wisconsin. The kids and adults who worked on the project will be invited to be cast in the production spot, and the author’s parents will win a FunJet vacation to the Dominican Republic!

Just for Fun!

The First Homecoming
The NCAA credits the University of Missouri with the first homecoming event. In 1911 Mizzou's Athletic Director Chester Brewer invited alumni to "come home" for the annual game against the University of Kansas. The event drew over 10,000 alumni and fans for a weekend of speeches, rallies, dances and a parade, with the big game as the weekend's center point. Though homecoming was canceled in 1918, when an influenza epidemic was raging, and the location was changed in 1944 to save gasoline for the war effort, this Tiger tradition continues to thrive today. Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska have become MU's favorite homecoming rivals.
