ELA State Exams Thursday and Friday ELA State Exams Thursday and Friday

The ELA State Exams are this week Thursday and Friday! We are excited for this opportunity for our students to show their growth and academic skills that they have developed over the course of the last year. Students have been hard at work practicing close reading strategies and evidence based argumentative writing and are well equipped to thrive!

We want to remind students to get a good night's rest and to continue to arrive on time, ready to put forth their best effort!

Complete your School Survey! Complete your School Survey!

6th Grade Science: Energy Transformation

In this unit, students learn about temperature regulation and energy transformations. They will explore the relationships between energy transfer and various factors like matter type, mass, and temperature. This unit also presents an opportunity for students to build skills in measurement, proportional reasoning and data analysis.

7th Grade Science: Cells and Body Systems

Students will learn the basics of the ‘cell theory,’ by collecting evidence that supports the idea that all living things are made of cells, and by discovering their structure and functions. Students will also be introduced to the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose "immortal" cells have resulted in groundbreaking discoveries, but were taken without consent. Henrietta's story allows students to learn more about cells while also grappling with issues of bias, discrimination and ethics in science. Lastly, students will learn how body systems work together to support multicellular organisms by thoroughly covering the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems.

8th Grade: Living Environment: Genetics and Biotechnology

In this unit, students seek to answer the following essential questions.

Essential Questions

  • Why do offspring look like their parents?

  • How do we use our knowledge of genetics to create organisms with “desirable” traits?

  • How does the genetic code (DNA) result in traits in an individual?

  • Why are the structures of proteins absolutely crucial?

  • How are traits affected by mutations, and how do they occur?

  • How have advances in biotechnology affected humans?
