Message from the Counselor, Mrs. Simmons
Genuine Love.
Hello, Wildcat Families! Welcome to February. We’re officially one month closer to warmer weather. Holla! And yes, I start that “warmer weather” countdown on December 26th. Stat! So… Dear February: I am desperately hoping that Punxsutawney Phil does not see his shadow. Bring on Spring! Who’s with me?!
Beyond my daydreaming of warmer weather, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention something about love, right? I mean, Valentine’s Day is coming up! I’m not talking romantic love; I’m talking genuine love for the humans around us – neighborly, family, friendly love. The word “love” is one of those words we try not to simply “throw around” because it’s a heavy word, meaning it carries a bit of weight. And I am in full agreement that we shouldn’t simply throw the word around but I am a big believer in the verb. Say what?? Yes, love is a verb. The act of loving those around us.
The people around us have purpose, value, and hearts. We all have our easy and hard days. Beyond that, we can also be sort of messy at times. Yet that doesn’t diminish our worth, which brings us to the beauty of being humans who work hard at being loving humans. Loving others can be beyond difficult. It’s easy to love the friendly, fun, happy, “following the instructions” people who are loving toward us. It’s a little tougher to dig deep and find a way to love the person who just cut us off or rolled their eyes for the fifth time. Does this challenge to love tough people mean we allow ourselves to be run over or ignore bad behaviors? No. Part of genuine love is tough love. Ignoring bad behaviors can actually be neglect. Sometimes love requires us to help correct others who need some correcting. But “tough love” must be done in love, meaning we see their value as we respond and correct. We take a few breaths or possibly 30 minutes to ponder, and then decide how to love that individual in the way they need.
Fun Family Challenge: I have a student who has become known (by a small few) for his random acts of kindness. I love this and would love to see it spread! What a simple way to love those around you. This doesn’t have to cost money – it can be noticing and smiling at people, giving a compliment, inviting someone new for a playdate, on down the line. Doing this as a family could be a fun way to practice loving those around you, make the world a little brighter, and it definitely makes you feel good to boot!
Sometimes love is easy and fun, sometimes it’s crazy hard. But the world is always, always a better place when we’re loving people. So… Happy Valentine’s Day, Washington Ohana! Enjoy the deep ponderings of what it means to love (as a verb) and the impact that has on this crazy world.
