There is so much to celebrate across Frederick County Public Schools!

As graduation ceremonies begin this week and continue into next, we celebrate the Class of 2026 and all they have accomplished. We are incredibly proud of our graduates and excited to see the many ways they will continue to make a difference in our communities and beyond.

We also congratulate Middletown Middle School’s Student Government Association for earning the Superintendent’s Cup for the third consecutive year — a historic achievement. This year’s student-led service efforts supported the Student Homelessness Initiative Partnership (SHIP), helping local families experiencing homelessness through advocacy, service, and community action. We commend the students, advisors, and all participating schools for their outstanding leadership and commitment to serving others.

Congratulations as well to FCPS Overall Support Employee of the Year Susan Barber, Student Activity Funds Coordinator, whose dedication and service have positively impacted schools and staff across our system for nearly three decades. We also recognize all of this year’s outstanding Support Employee category winners for the important contributions they make every day to support students, schools, and families.

In addition, we are proud to share that FCPS has been recognized as a Maryland “District on the Rise” in a national Education Scorecard analysis for exceptional academic recovery and student growth following the pandemic. FCPS ranked among the top-performing districts in Maryland from 2022–2025, with reading recovery placing in the 97th percentile nationwide, a testament to the hard work of our students and staff.

Thank you to our entire FCPS community for making these accomplishments possible and for continuing to inspire excellence across our school system.

Thank you,
Dr. Dyson

Mental Health Awareness Month and Support for Students Mental Health Awareness Month and Support for Students

At the April Student Advisory Council Meeting with Dr. Wright, students emphasized the need for mental health activities in schools. In particular, the students suggested student-led mental health programs, and county-wide discussions on the topic are especially valuable. Students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to share and to help each other.

Across Maryland, schools can advance student well-being by embracing Mental Health Awareness Month as a time to strengthen connection, safety, and engagement through small but intentional practices.

Throughout May, communities are celebrating Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, participating in events like Wear Green Day and QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) training, and accessing extended learning opportunities focused on emotional safety, mental health, and support for minoritized youth. Schools are encouraged to use ready-made campaign tools, student-led clubs and promotions, and share their activities publicly to normalize mental health conversations. “Say something. It could save a life.” Students can use the anonymous tip line 833-MD-B SAFE (833-632-7233) to report any concerns for their school community. Dial 988 Suicide and Crisis hotline is here to help 24/7 to provide free immediate emotional support.

Also, as the school year comes to a close, be aware of upcoming transitions for some of our students with graduation, moving from middle school to high school and elementary school to middle school are often celebrated but may also produce some levels of anxiety. With statewide “Go Green” efforts anchoring activities, the message is clear: meaningful impact doesn’t require large events—simple daily interactions, supportive environments, and visible participation make the difference in fostering student well-being. For questions, please contact Michael Muempfer, Director, Maryland School Mental Health Response Program, Division of Student Support and Federal Programs at michael.muempfer@maryland.gov.

Last Day of School for Students is Tuesday, June 16 (early dismissal) Last Day of School for Students is Tuesday, June 16 (early dismissal)

Frederick County Public Schools requested a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education related to the 180-day school year requirement. The waiver was intended to reduce the number of instructional days that would need to be made up following our six weather-related school closures this winter (Dec. 2; Jan. 26, 27, 28, and 29; and Feb. 23). Specifically, FCPS requested that the State waive three instructional days, which would have made Friday, June 12, 2026, the last day of school for students.

After reviewing the request at their March 24th meeting, the Maryland State Board of Education approved only one waived day of our request. As a result, the last day of school for students will be Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

Tuesday, June 16, will be a 2-hour early dismissal day for students. Wednesday, June 17, will be a professional day for teachers and their final workday of the academic year.

We know changes to the school calendar affect staff, families, and summer plans, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility throughout the winter weather season.
