FACE Summer Staff Development Book Study

Join us for our 8-week FACE summer book study on Google Classroom worth up to 30 professional learning hours! Participants will read Whitaker’s and Fiore’s book, "Dealing with Difficult Parents"-- a practical resource for educators that provides insights into transferable ways to effectively communicate and best collaborate with all parents, helping build important trust and partnership.

Communicating with parents is one of the most challenging and potentially stressful tasks that teachers face on a daily basis, but also one of the most important tasks. Whether trying to resolve a heated argument or delivering bad news, it is essential to know how to handle difficult situations and establish positive relationships with your students’ parents. In this updated second edition of the bestselling Dealing with Difficult Parents, award-winning educators Todd Whitaker and Douglas J. Fiore help you develop a repertoire of tools and skills for comfortable and effective interaction with parents.

The book’s features include:

    • Tools to help you understand parents’ motivations and how to work with them rather than against them;

    • Detailed scripts for dealing with even the most stubborn and volatile parents;

    • New strategies for increasing parent involvement to foster student success;

    • An all-new chapter on the role that social media can play in interacting with parents; and

    • A new chapter on initiating contact with parents to build positive credibility.

    Human Trafficking Resources for Families

    The city of Sacramento has one of the highest rates of human trafficking in the country. A 2022 report estimated more than 13,000 potential victims of human trafficking between 2015 and 2020. The numbers are exponentially growing since then, especially within our local district region. Human trafficking occurs every day on a national and global level. This crime impacts not only women and girls, but also men and boys. Many refer to human trafficking as “the crime that hides in plain sight.” Why? The signs are right in front of us, but many have not been trained to recognize them.

    3Strands Global Foundation offers resources, education, and support, empowering communities to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals. Thanks to a generous grant 3Strands Global Foundation received from our incredible community partners at the Rotary Club of Point West-Sacramento, our San Juan Unified students, families, staff and community now have free resources available to learn about human trafficking and important ways to help prevent it.

    The flyer below can be shared with families (translated fliers are also included in the attached PDF below).

    Stay tuned for an optional virtual, self-paced staff education course that will be available soon and professional learning hours will be awarded for completion. More information will be communicated in Behind the Scenes and Leadership Reflections.

    It's a Great Time to Show Your Volunteers Some Appreciation!

    Let’s take a moment to show our incredible volunteers how much they mean to our school community! Volunteers play a vital role in creating a positive, enriching environment for our students, and their time, energy, and dedication deserve to be recognized. San Juan Unified Most Valued Partner (MVP) Awards!

    On May 21st, 87 of our San Juan Unified community partners were celebrated for their amazing contributions to our school communities at our Most Valued Partner (MVP) reception at the Aerospace Museum of California. Those receiving MVP honors this year were specifically nominated by district or site leadership for the work they've done this year to amplify partnership supports within the four directions of our new strategic plan. We also were thrilled to present a new Game Changer Award to four of our incredible partners-- one per strategic direction-- for the exemplary way they've provided supports within each of those direction areas. Students and colleagues who have been directly impacted by those partnerships were able to surprise the awardees with their Game Changer Awards and share how much those partnerships have changed their lives, and it was such a powerful, wonderful way to see what a difference our partners make! We are so thankful for all that our partners do to help our students, families, staff and community!

    Nominations Now Open: San Juan Education Foundation’s 2025 STARS Hall of Fame & Awards

    Creating connections, inspiring collaboration, and cultivating community, the mission of the San Juan Education Foundation is to harness the combined power of philanthropy and partnership to propel student achievement and enrich the lives of educators. Founded in 1991, they provide support through the PROPEL Grant Program and a broad scholarship portfolio.

    The San Juan Education Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2025 STARS Hall of Fame and Special Recognition Awards, honoring the people who make the San Juan Unified School District shine.

    These annual awards celebrate the remarkable alumni, educators, and community partners who exemplify innovation, leadership, and excellence—and who represent the very best of San Juan Unified.

    They invite our entire community to help recognize outstanding individuals in one of three categories:

    • STARS Hall of Fame: Distinguished San Juan Unified alumni who have made a lasting impact in their professions and communities.

    • Legacy STAR Award (new in 2025): Former San Juan Unified educators—classified or certificated—whose lifetime of service has shaped generations of students.

    • Bryan McKrell Shining STAR Award: Individuals or organizations whose exceptional contributions have elevated the mission of the Foundation or District.

    Honorees will be celebrated at the San Juan Education Foundation’s annual gala “An Evening with the STARS” on October 10, 2025.

    Nominate someone who inspires you—help shine a spotlight on those who make our community exceptional.

    Submit your nomination by June 22 and learn more at https://www.sanjuaneducationfoundation.org/

    Problem Resolution Tip of the Month: The Importance of Recharge!

    Effective problem resolution starts with a regulated mind and body. As we enter the summer months, it’s important to take time to recharge, through rest, movement, mindfulness, or simply doing what brings you joy. When we pour into ourselves, we return more grounded, patient, and equipped to navigate the conflicts and complexities that arise in our schools. Self-regulation is the foundation of conflict resolution. When we model calm, we create space for clarity, connection, and constructive solutions. This summer, make space to restore, you’ll thank yourself come fall.

    Need Some Customer Service/ Conflict Resolution/ Deescalation Strategies for Staff PD?

    Would you like a mini presentation tailored for your staff around the topic of customer service or working with difficult people? Keep the Problem Resolution Office in mind for any professional development needs around these or similar topics for the beginning of the 2025-26 school year. The goal of these trainings is to provide practical strategies to enhance communication, de-escalate tense situations, and create positive outcomes while maintaining high customer service. Presentation requests can be sent to the Elizabeth.Lopez@sanjuan.edu and will be created with a focus on topics most beneficial for your staff and tailored to best fit the needs of your school.
