Grand Valley High School Shark Tank 2025

Congratulations to all of our Shark Tank participants. Students did a great job presenting to community sharks on their ideas to improve the community or school.

We were able to fund three winning teams:

  1. Lucas Cotto, Craig Cotter, Ean Olmstead, and Jane Castillo-Marion's community mural on the pedestrian bridge,
  2. Jonathan Clark's chromebook charging stations; and
  3. Melanie Rodríguez, Joselin Torres, Michael Moreno, and Julian Arzate's vending machine.

In total, the students were awarded nearly $7000 to fund their ideas about how to improve the high school experience and community.

Thank you to all of our participants, sharks, and the Aspen Community Foundation for funding our youth empowerment initiatives!

District News

Technology upgrades was the theme for the April 8 school board meeting.

The Board approved a new telephone system with Ring Central. This system runs over the Internet instead of copper telephone lines. The new telephone system will be installed this summer. Besides the lower monthly cost than the current system, the new system has features such as the ability to communicate through text messaging, voice over internet messaging and a softphone for mobile use. This allows staff to communicate with families from anywhere without having to be at their desks.

Along with the telephone system, the Board approved the purchase of a new server to accommodate video traffic from the security cameras around the schools.

Technology upgrades and maintenance is similar to any routine and preventative maintenance done in the school buildings. It can be costly, and the District allocates a portion of its capital improvement budgets to these upgrades. The District also applies to grants to help with the costs. Everything in schools, and in many businesses, depends on a strong technology infrastructure to be in working order.

Building Bridges

By Lucas Cotto, G16 Public Information Intern

A group of driven high school students from Parachute and Battlement Mesa set out to build a bridge between two generations, and they did it with games, laughter, and a lot of heart.

This week, the Leadership class from Grand Valley High School took the lead in organizing a community-centered event designed to bring youth and elders together; two groups that don’t often get the chance to interact. The idea was simple: bring joy, create bonds, and have some fun with people we don’t usually see in our day-to-day lives.

We kicked the evening off with a game night featuring a showdown of classic UNO and its chaotic cousin, UNO Flip. Surprisingly, none of us teens knew how to play UNO Flip, but the residents at Mesa Vista sure did. Not only did they teach us, they absolutely destroyed us. These weren’t just games, these were battles.

Then came BINGO. Now, I never thought a game could make your leg tremble from pure intensity, but blackout BINGO proved me wrong. The competition hit a whole new level. Accusations of cheating flew.

In the end, we wrapped up with a group photo featuring some of the amazing residents and the clubs that made it all happen: Key Club, LULAC, and National Honor Society. The smiles in that photo say it all.

This night wasn’t just about fun it was about breaking barriers, learning from one another, and proving that even across generations, connection is just a game or a conversation away.

Two Grand Valley High School Seniors Accept Appointments to U.S. Military Academies

Grand Valley High School is proud to announce that two outstanding seniors, Ean Olmstead and Craig Cotter, have accepted appointments to prestigious U.S. military academies, continuing a legacy of service, academic excellence, and perseverance.

Ean will be attending the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, making him the second student in Grand Valley High School history to receive such an appointment. As the first in his family to attend college and the second to graduate high school, Ean’s achievement is particularly meaningful. He plans to major in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, with a minor in Spanish and possibly another language or a cyber program. With aspirations to serve as an engineer in the Air Force, Ean is also a recipient of the prestigious Boettcher Scholarship, a full-ride scholarship to Colorado partner institutions — a testament to his academic achievements and leadership.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my mom, my brother, and everyone who helped me along the way,” said Ean. “Their belief in me made all the difference.”

Craig Cotter, a fellow senior at Grand Valley, will be attending the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he plans to study Civil Engineering. He hopes to serve a full 20-year career in the U.S. Army, with long-term goals of starting his own engineering and consulting firm or working independently as a civil engineering consultant after his military service.

“There was so much community effort behind my application, and I’m deeply grateful,” Cotter said. “The process was intense, but having Ean by my side through interviews, physical assessments, and countless hours of prep made all the difference. I’m incredibly proud that we both made it.”

Both students endured a rigorous and competitive application process that included congressional nominations, physical assessments, academic evaluations, and interviews. Their success reflects not only individual dedication but also the strength of the Grand Valley community that supported them every step of the way.

“We are so proud of Ean and Craig,” said Kelly McCormick, Principal of Grand Valley High School. “Their determination, leadership, and resilience are an inspiration to our students, staff, and families. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.”

Here in Garfield 16 we have been taking full advantage of winter programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

We have been excited to offer students various programs to learn to ski and snowboard. The Learn to Ski and Ride club was a program where students from 4th-8th grade got to go to Powderhorn for a series of three lessons. High school students were able to participate and help get kids comfortable on the mountain. The Earn a Turn program with AVSC took students in middle and high school to Buttermilk for a series of six days on the hill. Together, over 50 students got out to the slopes to become confident skiers and riders. The GVMS Journalism class took students to Powderhorn for a day of shredding as well. Students will be making videos to document their adventure. Keep an eye out on our socials for their reels.

At CFL, students in kindergarten and 1st grade dove into their animal units and culminated in various trips. 1st grade learned about animal adaptations and how they survive utilizing guest visitors from service animals in the region and culminating in a snowshoe trip on Grand Mesa.

Kindergarten also learned about animal habitats and got to go on recent field trips to PSS Wildlife Foundation and RIDE Equestrian program in Silt.

BUE's 4th graders took their annual field trips to Grand Mesa for a day of snow shoeing learning about beaver habitats and wilderness survival. We are thrilled to continue this traditional trip thanks to the Parachute Kiwanis club.

Students in the GVHS Outdoor Club went on their annual winter camping trip also at Mesa Lakes Lodge. We had a wealth of first time kidos on the adventure guided more experienced students that have been on the trip year after year. Highschoolers made meals for their peers, pull rainbow trout from the frozen lakes, ski and ride at Powderhorn, cross country ski, dug snow shelters and many of them slept in their huts the entire night there. The GVHS Outdoor Science class has been busy learning about hunter's ed and extending their learning beyond the classic hunter's ed manual with projects like safe firearm handling videos, animal dissections, and debates.

The weather this winter has been unpredictable and has caused us to change our plans, such as with the community ice fishing clinic and 6th grade cross country ski day, we have been able to still take over 500 kids in the district outside to explore their wintery back yard.

This Spring is filled with a jam pack outlook of trips and community events.

Middle school service day: 6th and 7th grade took a day to beautify their community and have some fun at the rec center. Each grade took part in some service work at Community park and near the Rec. Center to do some wildfire mitigation, trash pick up and park improvements. They also got to enjoy some gym games and swim at the Rec. Center pool. Lunch was provided by Alpine Bank.

The GVHS Environmental science classes took a deep dive into water science. Students visited the River Stop located at Lions Pond in Rifle where they learned about river conservation. They also check out the Rifle water treatment plant to get a real life understanding of what it take to provide water to a community.

3rd grade classes mired themselves at the Meeker White River museum. There they explored the life of early pioneers and enjoyed some scavenger hunts.

Ms. Scilla’s 2/3 class got to visit the Spores Alpaca farm in Silt.

Please keep an eye out for some upcoming programs and events.

We have the Rifle Earth Day celebration on April 26th at Centennial Park.

Bring your bikes to the annual BUE Bike Derby on May 10th.

GCO will be setting up an indoor 3D archery shoot at Rifle Rendezvous on May 17th.

And our 2nd annual Parachute Pond Fishing Derby will be on Saturday, June 7th.

See you outside.

How to Contact Your School Counselor

Garfield 16 provides all students with counseling services through the school counselors. School counselors work with students to support their academic growth and success as well as their social and emotional development. School counselors work closely with teachers, principals, and parents to support students experiencing issues that impact their learning. These issues can be, but are not limited to, declining grades, poor work habits, organizational skills, distracting behaviors, school avoidance, anxiety, trauma, and transient personal or family issues, such as the loss of a loved one or change in family dynamic. A school counselor may work with a student on an individual basis or as part of a group. In addition, school counselors work with the administration to assess at-risk students.

At the elementary level, school counselors provide direct instruction to all students in social and emotional growth and wellbeing. Topics include social skills, recognizing emotions, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. For students who may be experiencing difficulty with social skills, regulating behaviors, or school counselors provide individual and group coaching.

At the secondary level, school counselors begin to support students with college and career planning and decision making. School counselors work with students on their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) requirements. School counselors facilitate college and post-secondary career and workforce exploration. At the high school level, school counselors work with students to ensure they are on pace for graduation.

Medication Administration at Schools

Did you know that we can administer medication to your students if they have a need. What we need from you is a doctor's order/care plan, that needs to be signed by the doctor and by you as the parent. Parents then need to bring in medication to the school and we have trained staff that are able to administer medications. If you have any questions please call the district nurse at 970-285-5707

Transportation

Here are the updated bus routes.

For the 2024-2025 School Year, we will be using a software called School BusHub. This technology will allow real-time tracking. Which means parents/guardians can track their child's school bus in real-time using the School Bus Hub app. This feature provides peace of mind by allowing parents to know exactly where their child's bus is along its route. See the attached PDF for instructions on how to download the new app.

Please also note that bus routes may change based on student need. Check the website for updated routes: https://www.garfield16.org/departments/transportation
