Hello MRMHS Families!
Welcome back from April Break!
From here on out, the pace really picks up and it feels like a sprint to the end of the year. There is a lot to look forward to as we celebrate our middle and high school students, and especially our seniors as they move toward graduation.
At the same time, this is not when we ease up. Nearly 60 students will be taking AP exams in the coming weeks. Our middle school students in science, math, and ELA and juniors for science, will be completing state assessments. Across all grades, classes are building toward final projects, presentations, concerts, and other culminating work that reflects a lot of effort over the course of the year.
This is also a time to lean into perseverance. Finishing strong means sticking with things even when you’re tired, staying focused during a test or project, and not letting up just because the end is getting closer. How students approach these final weeks matters.
We are continuing to emphasize a few core expectations. Staying engaged in class and mentally present. Making the most of instructional time by limiting time out of class. Using respectful and appropriate language with both peers and adults. These are things that help keep our classrooms focused and positive for everyone.
As always, we appreciate your partnership. Reinforcing these expectations at home around effort, perseverance, engagement, and respect makes a real difference

From the Health Office
Spring is here! With the change of season, we are seeing more students experiencing seasonal allergies. Common symptoms include sneezing, running or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and fatigue. To help manage symptoms, you may consider keeping windows closed on high pollen days, having your child shower and change clothing after being outdoors, and using over-the-counter medications as recommended by your healthcare provider. As outdoor activities and sports increase, please remind students to stay well-hydrated, warm up before exercise, and use appropriate protective gear to help prevent injuries. Taking breaks when needed and listening to their bodies is also important. Wishing you and your family a health, safe, and active spring!
Sincerely,
Lisa Brooks, RN

MRMHS - Key Club Blood Drive
The Monadnock Regional High School Key Club, along with the Red Cross of New Hampshire, held another successful blood drive this week. One of the best ways to encourage young donors to give the gift of life is to hold blood drives at schools where they are comfortable. This can lead to future donations to help their community. One donation can save up to 3 lives, so if you can, donate today! Thank you Key Club for running another successful drive!

Be sure to get your yard sign orders in to celebrate our seniors!

What Parents Can Do To Prevent Drug & Alcohol Use
Springtime brings gatherings, events, and fun activities for high school students. The weather gets warm, there is a lot more to do outside, and often, a lot less supervision. How can you help your teen reduce the chances that they will use drugs or alcohol?
Friends and peers are important to teens, and while parents think that their teens value their friends more than their parents, studies have shown that this is not true. Your opinion and insight do matter, even if it is met with resistance and eye rolling.
According to the Parens Translational Research Center, there are 6 ways to reduce the chance your teenage child will drink, use drugs, or engage in risky behavior.
Build a warm and supportive relationship with your child.
Be a good role model when it comes to drinking, taking medication, and handling stress.
Know your child’s risk level.
Know your child’s friends.
Monitor, supervise, and set boundaries. Hold to them.
Have ongoing conversations and provide information about drugs and alcohol - including vapes.
This might sound straightforward, but follow-through and consistency are key. Know where your teen is, who they are with, and what they are supposed to be doing. This is especially important if there is a family history of addiction or drug use.
If you are concerned about drug and alcohol use issues, please check out this resource: 6 Parenting Practices That Help Reduce the Chances Your Child Will Develop a Drug or Alcohol Problem.

Anxiety in Teens is Rising: What’s Going On?
There are so many resources for parents to help their children with Anxiety. While anxiety is a typical human emotion, disorders that take these feelings to the extreme are on the rise. The American Academy of Pediatrics has several resources to assist parents with advice and guidance to help support their teen.
Anxiety is an important issue to address because it can lead to issues with attendance and chronic absenteeism. This can impact students and their success in school (causing more anxiety about school - it is a vicious cycle).
If you think your child is having anxiety issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school counselor or your pediatrician for resources that might help.
