The presidency and the shaping of America
Your are invited to “Freedom, Democracy & the Presidency,” a community conversation with author Jeffrey A. Engel, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at the T.B. Sheldon Theatre. This event is cosponsored by Community Education & Recreation and paid for by the Duff Endowment Fund.
Engel directs the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University. He has authored or edited 13 books on American foreign policy and is currently writing ”Seeking Monsters to Destroy: How America Goes to War, From Washington to Biden and Beyond” (Oxford University Press).
The community conversation's backdrop is the nation's semiquincentennial on the Fourth of July – the 250th birthday of the Declaration of Independence and the resulting war for freedom. Kerri Miller of Minnesota Public Radio will moderate the conversation, and there will be time for audience questions.
This is a free event, but reservations are recommended and can be made at www.sheldontheatre.org or by calling 651-388-8700.

If I were Red Wing mayor for a day, I would ...
Essays due April 1
If you were the mayor of Red Wing for one day, what would you do? Mayor Gary Iocco would like to know! Students can explain in their own words. Essays must be the original work of Burnside Elementary School students and be between 100 and 250 words.
One winner will be chosen. The student will be awarded $20 in Chamber Bucks, a ride in a police car and fire truck, a tour of the police and fire stations, and time to sit in the mayor’s Council Chamber seat with the winner’s name on the name plate. The winning student will also receive pictures of the day, and the essay will be published on the city’s website.
Essays are due by the end of the day Wednesday, April 1, 2026, and may be submitted in any one of these ways:

Words and pictures bring stories to life
David LaRochelle and Mike Wohnoutka, authors and illustrators of children's books, gave interactive presentations at Sunnyside leading up to spring break, encouraging students to let their imaginations and minds soar. This activity is made possible through a grant from the Red Wing Public Schools Foundation. The RWPSF was established in 1995 to enhance the experience of Red Wing students and continues to do so because of generous donor support. To donate, please go to RedWingSchools.org/how-to-donate.
