Hello Navigators,

This past week was wonderful at Nichols. Lots of learning happening and our Leader in Me Clubs began for 1st through 5th grade!

Our APEX Fun Run fundraising continues this week. So far fundraising is a success, which will do so much for helping our school! The event is on Wednesday with 2nd and 3rd grade running from 8:20-9:20, 4th and 5th running from 9:20-10:20 and TK/Kinder and 1st running from 11:15-12:15.

This Saturday, December 10th, from 9-11 AM, the PTO will host a Make and Take Holiday event. There will be crafts, pancakes, cocoa, and other fun special surprises! Check out this flyer for more information. Hope to see you there.

The district is hosting a Cyber Safety for Parents presentation with Jon Moffat. It will be held at El Camino High School Truax Theater on Tuesday, December 6th from 6-7:30. See this flyer for more information.

Our school site council will meet on Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:15 AM in room C1 or you can join virtually here - meet.google.com/qbs-phdg-pby. Even if you are not on the council you are welcome to attend and offer feedback. This week we will discuss some questions related to site and district funding.

Please join our PTO this year. The PTO does so much for our school and we do need your help. We know schedules are busy and there is no obligation for attending meetings or volunteering. We hope you will join to be a member and assist when/if you can.

This year every Wednesday will be a Spirit Day at Nichols. Wear blue or wear your Nichols gear. Due to a scheduling conflict the PTO was unable to sell Spirit Wear last week. Look for them after school. We will work to get consistent days and times.

We are so thrilled with out STEAM program. STEAM stands for Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. We have Ms. Goulet who teaches the STEM parts of STEAM and Ms. Harmon who teaches Art. Check out the STEAM Newsletter for the latest information.

Oceanside Unified School District has partnered with Care Solace to help families in need of mental health support. This services can help quickly find available services. The Oceanside Unified School District is committed to maintaining safe and secure campuses in order to promote the health, and well-being of our students, families, and staff. The following prevention practices are in place to support the safety and security of our school.

• In September, all of our staff will participate in an Active Assailant training where we will learn and practice response protocols for keeping our students safe in the unlikely situation involving an armed intruder.
• Our school regularly practices disaster and evacuation drills with our students and staff, including a minimum of two lockdown drills per year.
• OUSD partners with the Oceanside Police Department to provide four dedicated School Resource Officers (SRO) who are trained members of the National Association of School Resource Officers. Our SROs are stationed at schools within the district, and are regular visitors on our campus. The SROs will respond to any safety issues that arise at any of our schools.
• OUSD employs a highly trained team of over 45 Campus Security who serve our middle schools, high schools, and Surfside Academy.
• This summer, our administrative and custodial team led by the Student Services Coordinator, SRO(s) and OPD SWAT Officers conducted a comprehensive campus security walkthrough.
• Our school has the Raptor Visitor Management System which tracks all visitors or volunteers entering campus. Authorized visitors are then presented with a clearly marked identification badge.
• Our school has a comprehensive Crisis Response Plan that is reviewed annually with all staff, and placed in all classrooms, that details how to safely respond to specific emergency situations.
