Hello and happy Friday!

Today is report card day! After so many days and weeks of hard work and new learning in all subject areas, we are sending home the mid-year progress reports for all students. Please check for this report in your child’s backpack, in a manilla envelope. On the first page, you will see a letter from Dr. Baker explaining that these reports present a summary of students’ learning and development at this point in the year. You will also see the assessment criteria descriptions for the Approaches to Learning and Academic subjects. Please note that a “3” for each of the specific subject areas signifies that the student is “working steadily toward meeting end of year grade level standards independently.” This is considered right on track for where we would want students to be to achieve the end of year grade level standards by June. The reports are aligned with national grade level standards in math, literacy, social studies, science, art, music, physical education and world language. Below you will see links to grade level At A Glance documents that specify what students are working towards in each grade. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions. We want these reports to be a summary of student progress, but not the whole story. If you have concerns or questions, we are happy to have a meeting to discuss them.

Thank you to Rikert for a fun morning of skiing for our 3rd - 5th graders on Thursday. Everyone was dressed appropriately for the weather and was able to get out on skis --quickly being reminded of how challenging cross country skiing really is! It was a great day for skiing and we’re looking forward to more winter fun activities this coming week.

Have a wonderful weekend and take care,

Tracey

The Week in Photos The Week in Photos

The big snowstorm on Monday left very fun snowbanks around the upper parking lot. Students had a great time playing in them during recess!

Skiing at Rikert was super fun. Kids bundled up and kept moving --some even said they were hot by the end of it!

A Note from the Nurse

Flu activity is on the rise at SCS. We have cases of flu and/or flu-like illnesses in almost every grade. The flu is a highly contagious respiratory virus. It is spread through respiratory droplets or by touching contaminated surfaces. Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body/muscle aches, chills, and headache. Remember, having a fever and just one other symptom can be the flu. This is a good time to review some prevention techniques:

  • Cough and/or sneeze into your bent elbow or a tissue

  • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently

  • Wear a facial mask when around others that are ill or if experiencing cold symptoms yourself

  • Stay home when sick (follow district guidelines)

  • Clean high-touch surfaces frequently with household disinfectants

  • Get plenty of rest (students need 8-10 hours of sleep each night - more if ill)

  • Eat a well-balanced diet

  • Drink plenty of fluids (6-8 cups of water a day)

Feel free to email Nurse Jones with any questions or call the Vermont Department of Health at 802-863-7240, option 2.

Opt-In to receive text alerts

In the case of unexpected changes in the bus schedule/route or the day’s schedule (due to inclement weather or other unexpected events), I will send a text alert out to families through our School Messenger system. We were made aware earlier this week that parents need to “opt in” to receive these texts. Please follow the steps below to register your cellphone with School Messenger if you have not been receiving my texts yet.

FOSCS Fundraiser --High Mowing Seeds!

This Monday the 2nd, students will receive an order form for selling High Mowing's most popular seeds and seed combinations to raise money for school related activities and materials. Students are encouraged to ask family members, neighbors and friends to purchase seeds for the coming spring & summer.

Seeds will arrive in plenty of time (March) to start indoors on window sills or will keep just fine until the snow melts and gardens are ready for planting.

Gardening’s not your thing? Consider purchasing some seeds as a gift for the special gardener in your life. Mother’s Day, perhaps? High Mowing seeds are certified organic and non-GMO, so while you’re helping FOSCS, you’re also growing delicious, home-grown organic produce and beautiful gardens!

Order forms are due back at school on Wednesday, February 18th.
