The 3 "PTOs" Met with Superintendent Conway

The leaders from the PTOs from all 3 schools in Berlin-Boylston met with Dr. Conway in August. It is believed that this was the first time all three organizations met together. The group discussed how they can collaborate and communicate to better support the schools, students, and staff. Each organization, LINK in Berlin, BEC in Boylston, and the PTO for Tahanto are critical to the success of the schools. Each leader expressed the hope for more involvement and they were also excited for the year ahead. The meeting was an important step forward to further unify the district while honoring each town and school's traditions and history.

Berlin-Boylston Regional Schools Awarded $146,000 PRISM II Grant to Address Literacy Instruction and High-Quality Literacy Materials.

Superintendent Conway is proud to announce that the Berlin-Boylston Regional School District has been awarded a $146,000 grant that will be used to provide intensive literacy instruction training to staff and support the purchase of new curriculum materials for grades K-5 at both Berlin Memorial School and Boylston Elementary School. The grant is part of the $24.7 million investment from the Healey-Driscoll Administration to focus on strengthening literacy instruction and improving reading outcomes for students across Massachusetts.

The district applied for the competitive grant in the spring, led by Lisa Sequeira, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Berlin-Boylston was one of 71 districts across the commonwealth selected. PRISM, which stands for Partnership for Reading Success–Massachusetts, is part of the multi-year Literacy Launch from the state and designed to support districts meeting the requirements of new legislation requiring the use of high-quality literacy materials and evidence-based literacy instruction.

The district had begun work in the spring of 2026 to formulate a team across the district to start the process of curriculum review. This team’s work will now be supported by additional coaches and with a goal of creating a Literacy Plan for a coherent approach to teach literacy using updated

materials.

β€œOur educators are ready and genuinely excited to do this work. This grant gives us an incredible opportunity to do it thoughtfully and collaboratively. We have the chance to bring our elementary educators together around the shared purpose of effective literacy instruction and build something

that will have a lasting impact on teaching and learning across our district,” said Lisa Sequeira

Julia Flanigan, a Grade 1 Teacher at Berlin Memorial and one of the teachers on the Literacy Review Team offered, β€œIt is so exciting to begin this work knowing that our students will benefit from effective literacy instruction and high-quality learning materials.”

β€œThis grant will have a meaningful and lasting impact on our students. Teachers will be able to deepen their knowledge and expertise in effective reading instruction as well as have access to high-quality, research-based materials,” shared Stephanie Woodward, a 2nd Grade teacher at Boylston

Elementary and a member of the Literacy Review Team.

Catherine LeDuc, a 5th Grade teacher at Boylston Elementary and also a member of the Literacy Review Team added, β€œI am looking forward to teachers across our district having a shared vision of what effective literacy instruction looks like and seeing our students benefit from this type of

continuity.”

β€œA great deal of my prior professional work has focused on supporting schools and districts with systems level change to implement what is known as The Science of Reading. This includes consistent evidence based instruction across classrooms and uses high-quality curriculum to build

coherence throughout the district. At a time of stretched resources, this grant is a big victory for the school and communities and I am very excited for what we will be able to accomplish," said Dr. Conway, the new superintendent.

The district’s focus on bringing coherence to teaching, learning and systems is a key aspect of the completed strategic plan. The literacy team will begin work in September and be meeting with coaches from MA DESE throughout the year. The grant cycle the district will be participating in is

PRISM II - cohort 2, which is technically focused on Grades K-3 but the district will expand its focus to K-5. It is expected that a recommendation for curriculum adoption will be presented publicly in the spring of 2027.

Tahanto and BBRSD Awarded $15K Innovation Career Pathways Planning Grant

In late August the district learned that we were awarded the Innovation Career Pathways Planning Grant from MA DESE. This is a competitive grant awarded to schools and districts who are seeking to develop career oriented pathways for high school students that provide a course sequence, including advanced courses, with an internship, for specific in-demand industries in the region and state. The District Curriculum Coordinator, Ms. Lisa Sequeira and Principal Rich Cameron, collaborated with Dr. Conway in the spring to prepare and submit the grant as they focused on enhancing student opportunities for the Tahanto High School students.

The grant is $15,000 that will be allocated for staff time to develop the full plan and application to be designated a Career Pathways school. The money will also support the engagement with MassHires and other local industries to develop partnerships and plan for the Innovation Pathway program along with MyCAP training for our Guidance staff. This plan is the first step towards programming and additional funding that can be transformative for a high school, in light of the expected changes coming for new graduation requirements.

There will be more information coming out throughout the year about this with opportunities for student, faculty and community input.

πŸ€” Seasonal Reminders πŸ€” Seasonal Reminders

🚌 Bus safety and road safety

Reminder that school is starting up again and School Buses are out on the roads. Children will be walking to get onto the buses.

We need to make sure we are aware and we are slowing down and stopping. Be extra mindful of not passing busses in the opposite direction when they are stopped to pick up or drop off. Additionally, smaller school transportation vehicles such as vans and similarly marked vehicles should be treated the same as large yellow busses when they stop on roads for drop offs and pickups.

Please make sure that you are checking the bus routes prior to the start of school as routes may have been updated.

Dear Berlin-Boylston Regional School District,

πŸŽ‰ The transition here at BBRSD has been busy and great! I am excited for the direction that the BBRSD is headed. With the start of school upon us, I am looking forward to spending time in classrooms with students and teachers. I also look forward to meeting parents, guardians, and community members at different events.

For educators, students, and often caregivers, the start of school is considered "The New Year." With that comes excitement for what is to come and all the possibilities, but also some natural nervousness about the unknowns. Adjusting back to routines can take some coordinated effort, but most of us do well with routines. The pace of the day and the rhythm of the weeks in the fall always seem to make things fly by. Hopefully, we can all find moments to slow down and appreciate the simple things of school, activities, friendship, and learning.

The intent of this newsletter is to keep the families and community informed of things across the district. You should expect this newsletter monthly but you can also expect regular communication from our schools that will have more information specific to each school. The newsletter will not be the only form of communication as I know we will need other structures to both share information and engage in two way communication. However, I anticipate that most of you will find this newsletter to helpful for its intended purpose.
