Principal's Message - 04/28/20

Dear Prescott Community,

I hope this communication finds you all well and in good health. It was great to see so many families submit a video of their child reading a story to our school community. It is such a great way to stay connected. Keep those videos coming!

Our implementation of distance learning is in full swing. Hopefully each of you has been able to make contact with your child's teacher. Google Classroom is the platform that most teachers are using to stay in contact with families. This is also the place in which teachers will post assignments and additional work. Make sure you are checking Google Classroom daily. If you need assistance, please contact your child's teacher, or see the help document attached here.

The week of May 4-8 is Staff Appreciation Week, so make sure to reach out to a staff member and let them know that you appreciate everything they are doing for your child. These fabulous people are making it possible for our students to continue their education at home. For this, I am extremely grateful!

If you need anything at all during these difficult times, please do not hesitate to to contact me via REMIND or email at sam_maranto@parkrose.k12.or.us.

Thank you,

Sam Maranto, Principal

Prescott Elementary School

Administrative Professionals Day

While I wish we could be together to celebrate the amazing administrative professionals who run our front office, I still want to pay them the recognition they deserve! Eleisa Perry and Leslie Martinez are the dynamic duo that run the day to day operations of Prescott Elementary School. As the principal, I couldn't ask for a better team of people to work with so closely! Thank you both for your hard work and dedication to the students and staff of our school!

Occupational Therapist Message

Hello Parkrose Community!

My name is Heather Block. My colleague, Patricia Perez, and I provide Occupational Therapy to qualified students within the Parkrose School District. During the school closure we will share resources that all students and families can use to help build and support a variety of school skills.

Last week we introduced Yoga Calm as a resource for emotional regulation and strength. I hope you and your family were able to access and enjoy the yoga sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. The FREE sessions will continue through the spring. If you missed the link last week and want to try it out here it is again!

Kids Yoga: Tues/Thurs: 10:00 - 10:45 am (PDT)

Zoom link & Info

Emotional regulation is important for all students (and parents!) to be calm and ready to learn, both in the classroom and at home. When a child has difficulty getting their mind and body calm, we adults can offer structure, support and tools to help them regulate their sensory system.

This week I’ve added a link to a great article that provides an abundance of ideas to create sensory tools and spaces at home with items you may already have on hand. While the article is written with input from occupational therapists and special education teachers, the tools are all play based and any child can use them to help cope with stressors that may impact their ability to be emotionally regulated. I challenge parents to create and try at least one tool this week with their student. Enjoy!

Don't forget to check out the daily read aloud stories from myself and special mystery readers. If you want your child to be a mystery reader, you can send your video via email at sam_maranto@parkrose.k12.or.us. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel and check back daily for new stories!

Thank you to all the families that have submitted videos of your child reading! It is adorable and the entire school community enjoys viewing the students read!

Distance Learning

At the beginning of the month you should have received a package via US Mail that contained a reading and math packet based on your child's current grade level. Below is a link to those packets electronically. Additionally, answer guides are also attached for each grade level. We hope you find these paper/pencil packets useful during our distance learning.

Make sure to continue to practice math and reading on iReady! Students can click on the link to see what lessons your teacher has planned for you.

Google Classrooms

Your child's teacher may have set up a Google Classroom to help facilitate student learning and connections with families. While having a Google Classroom is not mandatory, I have included links to the teachers who have already created a classroom for their students. Some teachers may be using a different platform, like Dojo, to communicate to families. Make sure to have your child join their Google Classroom.

Thank you to Mr. Shaffer for creating a "how to" video to assist families on getting on Google Classroom. Click here to view the video!
